It makes sense that this type of activity takes place in juvenile centers. The place is swarming with hormones and someone is bound to lose control and violate someone eventually.
I am not surprised that kids in prison are being abused by other inmates because you see that everywhere and not just in juvenile prisons. It is surprising that the abuse is mostly coming from the staff at the prison. I don't know how else to reduce the abuse in the prisons since they already passed the National Prison Rape Elimination Act.
For one i find it kind of disturbing that Texas holds on of the highest rates for abuse in junvinile prisons. Many kids in juvinile prisons are usually in the stage of rebellion and trying to prove how big and bad they are, no matter what they have to do. I think another factor in the abuse is that they fear of getting abuse themselves so they would rather do the abuse and find some respet rather than sitting back and looked down upon from the other kids.
Some of the statistics given do not surprise me, like that of homosexual youths being sexually abused by other inmates about 10x's more often than heterosexuals. However, I was shocked when I learned that most of the abused in general comes from the facilities staffers (80% of the total). I don't know how accurate the survey is, but 80% seems awfully a lot. I mean, I have always been aware that corruption and abuse from staff members exist. But I would have expected that most of the abuse would come from inmates not staffers.
This subject does not suprise me at all. As i feel that violence is happening in every prison across america. That is something that you have to deal with when you make the choice to go against the law and get caught. As bad as it seems it is apart of the rehabilitation.
I wasn't surpized by the offense by inmates on inmates but I am extremely appauled and upset about how several of the abused cases where involving workers and gaurds of the prison.
When i first saw this title i did not even think about it talking about sexual abuse. I thought it was going to talk about how other inmates would gang up and beat up other inmates. So when i started reading this article it took me by suprise. I can NOT believe that Texas is amongst the highest for these horriable acts... yeah these kids are inmates but they ARE just kids..I hate that their innocence is being so brutally taken away from them...and sure some of them have already lost said innocence but still these brutal acts can still be tramatic on them. And as far as the "STAFF" go well i think its rather disgusting that a grown man/woman feels the need to take advantage of a child whether that child be incarcerated or not...ITS ABSOULUTLY UNFORGIVABLE.......and for the people who are committing these horrible acts they need to be sent to prison for life........
It does not surprise me that Texas is one of the states in which this type of activity is going on, or that it happens more often in Texas...Then we question why these young offenders come out of TYC more violent and committing more crimes when they are exposed to this type of treatment by the people that are supposed to be mature responsible adults
As a state there's alot that is wrong with Texas. We need some major changes within the justice system to help protect the people. They need to be more careful on the people that is hired as well as being more observant and watching the staff since they are aware that juvenile prison abuse is happening. There should be some more rules and guidelines set to help with the safety of the juveniles.
I am not surprised that young prisoners are being raped in jail, I am surprised that so many are getting raped by prison officials. The guards are supposed to be there to help protect the prisons for getting raped, not raping them. They are adults, they should know better, they but be dealt with.
It bothers me that sexual abuse and rape are usually a given when discussing prison life and now even juvinile detention life. This is horrible that it happens by staff. You already know they are miserable, so leave them alone. The ones that take advantage of inmates are normal people in public. They too are commiting a crime, and getting away with it sadly. Thankfully some people speak out.
I have seen some shows on TV and these things happen in the shows or movies so its not a huge surprise to me but it also just seems so unreal and hard to picture it happening in real life. Maybe because its the officials that are raping and not the inmates. It is so wrong and situations like this should always be reported and the fact that the victims dont speak up upsets me. They probably feel as if it is their faults but its not. The blame should be put on the officials. I am glad that they are making it easier for victims to speak up and that people are showing that they care instead of looking the other way. I am not sure why they think that they can do that to children. Just because they are young and they are criminals does not mean the officials should take advantage of that and think it's okay. It's wrong and there needs to be more ways to watch for these things.
