  1. The assassination of a Russian mob boss does not surprise anyone, and only shows that Russian organized crime is rampant and is only getting worse. Assassination hits in broad daylight could only mean that the mob is in control and does not fear the government. If the mob does not fear the government the only explanation that could be given is that the government is working for the mob or is being paid off to turn a blind eye. I do believe that the assassination of Aslan Usoyan could only have two explanations. First the assassination may possibly have been called by his organization, since maybe someone in his organization wanted to take his power. Second the assassination could have been called by a rival organization, as stated in the article. I do believe since Usoyan is now dead, the organization that Usoyan once ran is going to have internal conflict, since a new mob boss is going to be needed. In addition the rival organization is going to attempt to take the territory that Usoyan had control of and if they attempt to do this there is going to be a lot more bloodshed. In which I believe in the coming months or possible year there will be more acts of violence in broad daylight .I don’t believe that the Organized crime in Russia will ever stop since the mob in Russia is the government.

  2. Killing someone in broad daylight, that’s nothing new. This world is heading in the wrong direction because things like this are starting to become the norm. When an individual decides to take an individuals like in broad daylight shows how much they do not care for anyone else. They young lady that was struck during the shooting am sure the thought never crossed her mind that “Hey, I hope I don’t get shot today”. The government has got to do something. I know that sometimes we politicians that are in with the “Mob” but we need to fight to have more clean politicians and cops if we want things like this to stop happening. The only way that these things will stop is if the people in these different communities worldwide would stand up and take back their home towns. We tend to live in fear of these mob individuals it is going to take the people to fight against these gangs to help protect the younger generation. This entire incident taught the younger generation is that if someone does something to you and you don’t like it, just kill them. If we don’t prevent this message from being taught this world will I be in serious trouble.

  4. Goodness this is scary then again most Russians are scary. The statement; “Russia is a Mafia State” and the drug trade, I can always draw back to what I’ve experienced. When I first got to Fallujah; there was a Russian sniper shooting at everybody. I think after the first few weeks another battalion got him. Apparently, there have been a lot of Russian personnel over in the Middle East. From what I’ve gathered from Intel classes so far, they answer to no one but other Russians. They are the ones who helped the Middle Easterners make IED’s and who, obviously, are providing the weaponry; Ak-47’s, RPG’s, etc. Some of the Russians caught over there, have had no ties to anyone. Some are just there to kill Americans. Others, I have heard have even been hired to kill the local population. I also agree with Professor Galeotti is saying. From what I’ve learned; they follow the money, there is no loyalty to one entity. Just to add to the fun, no joke, three of the four Russian Americans (straight from Russia) I have met, had to come here because their parents had some tie to some crime organization. They also all four are as tough as nails and fear absolutely nothing. One has a missing leg and after shaking the hand of one of our presidents, gleefully exclaimed on Facebook, “President ***** shakes hands like a *****”.

  5. "One of Russia's most powerful mob bosses was shot dead by a sniper in broad daylight in central Moscow on Wednesday" a very good way to start an article and drag people into it, but is it relevant nowadays?. maybe what everybody is paying attention to it, at this point, is that one of the most powerful mafia bosses was killed, but he was killed in broad day light!!!!. this case hit the news because the murder one was some how famous (or at least a lot of people new about him), but i'm positive that there is plenty of cases of people being murder at day light and it doesnt cause the same impact in society as it did before, because we are getting use to it. it is really scary how crime is increasing, and every day more and more people dont care about it.

  6. This assasination in no the least bit shocking. Thats the price you pay for involvement in organized crime. Its also ironic that the sniper knew where and when the Mafia leader would be! Im just saying!!! However, the irony of the whole thing is be a CRJ major i actually feel like a job well done. Nonetheless, this will create a power vacuum for the new open position along with disorganization in the ranks and the soldiers because every one will want to fill his shoes so its about to get messy up there!!!

  7. I guess at this point I am so desensitized to the whole “killing in broad daylight”. AND? Yes, he was a Russian mob boss. Yes, evidently he was always heavily guarded. I only see that it was obviously someone close to him that was leaking information about his location. Now comes the interesting time of deciding who will replace him. It’s not as if now all mafia related crime will cease. The next guy will just fight his way into that position.

  8. Asian Usoyan couldn't avoid this dreadful fate forever, after-all he was considered one of Russia's most powerful mob bosses. It was only a matter of time before he was brought down by another mob group, though I do find it surprising that he managed to survive over seventy years. Russia might be experiencing new changes with one of the top mob bosses gone. The underworld gangs are most likely to cause more problems in Moscow. I sense more chaos ahead for mother Russia. There will be far attempted more assassinations. Most likely the leaders that are assassinated will be replaced quickly. That power figure that takes over the role of mob boss always has a chance of becoming far more aggressive or brutal than his predecessor. Mob wars in public areas might be more frequent and more people will get harmed in the crossfire. Hopefully this underground clan wars won't interfere with the 2014 Olympics. Overall, Russia is a vast country therefore I believe most conflicts will occur outside of city of Sochi. The government might have to take drastic measure to keep the chaos down, but if mob wars have been going on for a while now. So, I doubt one assassination of a major mob boss will be the start of a grand mob war that will reach the surface and be all over on the media.

  9. After reading this article it reminds me of a new show that I just began watching called Red Widow. On the pilot of the show a woman’s husband was killed in broad day light in front of their youngest son. The family is also part of the Russian Mob. I thought that things like this only happened on television, but I guess the writer had to have got the idea behind the show from somewhere. This is a very sad and scary situation, but people know that they are putting their lives on the line they start interacting with the Russian Mob. Even though sometimes they don’t have a choice, because they are born into this life style.

  10. For the President of Russia who has worked to eliminate Mafia warring, and Mafia activity in general, this assassination was a major setback, or blunder, and given the facts that the Mafia has been revamping since the afghan heroin influx, and the opportunities provided by the 2014 Winter Olympics, the results of one death could be a spark for future hits in Russia. I feel that in order to correct the growing problem with Mafia in Russia, the clans need to be weeded out totally. These type of drug Lords or mob bosses shouldn’t be able to deliver hits in broad daylight, or at anytime at all in a functioning democracy, and with hits reoccurring more and more in Russia, now is the time to act to end this type of tragedy. I feel that if the Russian government does not react in a timely manner to this particular murder that more high profile hits will definitely ensue, and further violence in the streets will be inevitable.
I most definitely feel that it is time for the Federal troops to step in and put an end to the possibility that Russia has become a virtual mafia state.

  11. The assassination of Aslan Usoyan, believed to be one of Russia’s biggest mafia bosses proves that we do not have many people left in this world who fear getting caught while committing a crime in broad daylight . We keep on seeing more people careless of the government. By seeing crimes like this not only in public, but in broad daylight can make anyone think that the mob is taking control of the Russia government. Right now our world it’s going crazy and we keep on seeing crimes committed by people who do not care for any of the laws we have. Something really unfair it’s that individuals who have nothing to do with any organizations are being killed or injured just because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. It is even sadder when an innocent child it’s killed just because crazy people decide to take revenge. Not only Russia, but many other countries have to take full control of their government to prevent innocent people from getting killed or injured and to simply just protect the people who just want to be in public without having to worry if they are going to make it back home safe or not.

  12. "the virtual mafia state" that is a pretty bad name for a country. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the mob took over everything, a lot of the people that used to have a political position in the communist government became gangster as the communism collapsed. A lot of weapons, tanks, and rockets are still left in Russia that are in control of the mobs, and since now the war escalated because of the influence of afghan heroin and the biggest boss gone.

  13. The assassination in broad daylight is not a new thing, but could also be a warning for anyone watching or in charge of anything. The mobs are slowly starting to come back and take over and show Putin that they are still there. They clearly are not afraid of the government if they are just openly attacking people, especially high profile people like the mob boss. I feel like this attack is probably opening a door to more open and brutal violence and they need to prepare for this and try to get rid of these gangs as fast as they can before more things like this happen.

  14. The mob boss being shot in broad daylight is not new. I agree with dbrewer when he stated that “it’s the price you pay for being involved in organized crime”. Also, it would not be surprising, if they don’t ever apprehend the killer. Russia is a very corrupt country, and it is just a matter of time who the next Russian mob boss will be. The question is if, this person was so bold to kill a Russian mob boss in broad daylight, could it have been a hit that was ordered by politicians or even the police?

    1. This does seem to be conspiracy-like. My first thoughts are that no one is even investigating the death. I am sure they pretty much just buried him and never gave it another thought. At least here in the US (MOST of the time) no matter if you are a criminal or not your death will be investigated. Maybe not with vigor but looked at.

  15. There have always been feuds between Russian mob members and this story proves that the violence is still as cold blooded and ruthless as ever. However it’s still quite surprising that even though Aslan Usoyaun was clearly a ‘marked man’ after two previous attempts on his life he was not fully protected. The problem with a major mob death like this is that it can only lead to more conflict and death. In the coming months there will definitely be more blood-shed in revenge of what has happened.
I was aware that Russia was a very violent and corrupt place throughout the 1990’s however it seems like the tension and brutality between rival mobs is beginning to rise again with the influx of heroin in the region.

  16. The Nobody now in days fears do getting caught or in the action. It really doesn’t matter anymore if you’re simply the biggest mafia boss or any random person. The government is lacking in its duties to protect people it seems like anybody now in days can actually get away with anything. Violence is always going o be around cold blooded murders are happening everyday any time. The government should have some control over these shooting happening in our society. Innocent people are getting killed everyday because of the mafia or drug cartels. assassination of Aslan Usoyan is one of many assassinations taking place every day in broad day light.
