UK Gangs

  1. It’s amazing how the UK has a really bad gang problem. I would have never thought that they had it as bad as they do, also how some of their gangs which are based here in the United States also managed to reach over their also like the bloods and the crips. Gun control also has a serious problem just like here in the states but what the slide says is true even with gun control the people are still going to buy weapons on the black market to create more problems for the government thus increasing the volume of violence in cities.

  2. With all the murders that have taken place in the UK I don’t see how they can say that they don’t have a problems with gangs. If there wasn’t a problem why have the Bobbies gone from just having whistles to blow to carrying hardcore guns? Then for Tony Blair to say, “It is a black problem”, is crazy to me. He can’t obviously be paying attention to any of events that are taking place around him.

  3. I would have never guessed that the UK had a really bad gang issues. When I hear about gang issues the UK is one that does not come up that often. As we have seen the problem seems to be gun control. Gangs seem to be getting a hold to some weapons that the police never thought that they would. Based on the gun issues they are seeing more individuals being harmed by higher caliber weapons which has caused the police to step up and get bigger and better weapons. If there can be some way to get a hand on those individual that are most involved in the black market and cause a halt in their sales then the gang violence might diminish.

  4. It is weird to hear that even United Kingdom have a gang problem, first when i hear about that i though that they still may have a hooligan problem there but it is not soccer related anymore there. The gangs in London are very different then here in United States. The police in London is very prepare for the gangbangers but there problem is not that big as in Cape Town or Rio. I think that the gang problem there is very minimal and not really treating the public that much as gangs do in United States. I still think that the hooligans are more crazier and violent then UK gangsters.

  5. Before reading this slideshow I never thought of London being infested with gang problems. Nor having a high population of gangsters period. I always imagined London being a glorious place, but after seeing all the images of street gang members. That was a reality checker that that media does deceive about different popular tourist attractions around the world. Strange that Europe’s most powerful finical center is dealing with street problems. Wonder how the average tourist handles with seeing gangs within the city. Even with guns banned London gangs are responsible for over sixty five percent of all gun murder. It seems that the reason for the rise of gang violence was the arrival of the drug market in the late 1980’s. Afterwards youth violence went up gradually, and is still growing in London today. Besides the De-industrialization era in London might have contributed to more youth members joining a drug gang. The lack of having a job will most likely follow up with a teen falling prey into the drug industry.
Either I haven’t been paying attention to the news for the past few months or the media does a good job with concealing the realty of gang problems in London. Never knew that London suffered from gang problems during the 2012 Olympics. Most images displayed in the slideshow were quite arousing. The hoodie stereotypes actually exist in London. Overall I don’t think the gang violence isn't that threatening, but if left untouched it might grow into a serious issue and give London a bad image in the future. Extreme gun control in London has given some suggestions that banning guns entirely might not be the answer cause people are always going to find ways to obtain them. With guns being restricted a simple gangster might feel a high level of power by simply wielding an illegal weapon.

  6. In agreeance with everyone else on the fact that it is amazing how London is one of the most beautiful cities in the world attracting many people, but at the same time is heavily gang infested. They are not really regular gang members, they are the fancy type worried about there appearance and more knife carriers than gun possession. It's also crazy how they are the biggest financial center in Europe, but yet they have really poor areas which is where the "hoodies" started.

  7. What I found with the study of UK gangs is that the gang culture seems to be easily cultivated by the sharp growth within the ever growing capitalistic society within the UK it is like gasoline on a fire. The oppression of the minority and lower income classes is so prevalent that the hatred that builds within these factions’ acts as an existing gangs capital. When you have frustrations that build within a particular sect within society and that group faces the lack of education within society, lack of money, lack of respect, combined with an outward display of racism within your own police force (Mark Duggan killing) you have a continual supply of young careless people for gangs to recruit. The Ross Kemp clip helps to give us the insight to the anger that is felt on a daily basis not only within these gangs but amongst the residents who live in the neighborhoods where these gangs operate. The London riots are an excellent example of these frustrations that built to a boiling point. Media portrayal of the riots was one of young people who live in a very “me “ orientated society so they just wanted to steal if you take the time to really analyzize this concept you will come to find out it was much more than that
