Giggling Teen Flips Judge the Bird, Judge not Amused

Never flip the judge off right before determining the final sentence. OUCH! http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/giggling-woman-flips-judge-bird-judge-not-amused-210739814.html

  1. I think it’s about time a judge puts their foot down and not put up with an attitude from a suspect. Kids Ms. Soto’s age think the rules don’t apply to them, but Judge Rodriguez-Chomat wasn’t going to put up with her mouth. There are unsaid rules when you appear in a court of law and if you don’t act properly you will pay the price. Judge Rodriguez-Chomat acted properly in increasing her bail and then giving her 30 days in jail for contempt of court. If Ms. Soto wasn’t carrying Xanax she wouldn’t have been in court and would not be in jail for 30 days.
I just don’t understand why kids today think they are above everyone and act like the world owes them something. I don’t pretend to have the answers but maybe if things at home were different and if judges were stiffer with punishment on first offenses the kids might think twice before acting stupid! Ms. Soto MAY learn her lesson, but only time will tell.

  2. This article doesn’t surprise me not even a little bit. I’m glad the judge didn’t let her get away with her actions. I don’t think her sentence was overkill not even a little bit. It’s crazy how some teens think they have free reign over the world and that certain things don’t apply to them. I’ll never understand why some kids act in this manor, it could stem from many different things. Hopefully since the judge acted promptly with the Ms. Soto’s punishment that if she’s ever put in that position again she will think twice about the things she says and does in a courtroom.

  3. WOW that is amazing. I have seen many different new stories about judges cracking down on the proper ways to act inside of the court room. This woman was not taking this situation seriously and so the judge made an example out of her. She though that she was going to be able to appear in front of the judge and do whatever she wanted but she soon found out that was not the case. I do not believe that her sentence was too much. Had she continued talking she could have gotten a worse sentence. Some say that judges have bad days and they take it out on those that appear in front of them but when you think about it if you had not been doing whatever you were doing to get you in front of the judge you would not even be in this type of situation so you can try to blame the judge but really whose fault is it.

  4. The punishment that the Judge was so appropriate, but was it enough? The "giggling" girl does not appear to be mentally all there as well as having a crappy attitude to authority. Her immaturity has probably been a way that she has gotten attention in the past and probably has a history of being mouthy and getting away with it until now. Because of her immaturity, I do not think that the punishment will be a deterrence to keep her from being so brash in the future.

  5. I was really shocked when I seen this video! She reminded me of some of the inmate that I would hear talking to one another on their way to court. They see being in jail as a cool thing and don’t take it serious. When in fact it is very serious and could change their whole life in the blink of an eye. In Penelope’s case once she spent a few nights in jail she realize that she disrespected the wrong person and apologized. Being that this was her first time in jail and she didn’t like it too much she will probably stay out of trouble. I seen this as a form of shock therapy for her to get her act together and stop using drugs that are not prescribed to her to get high.

  6. That’s about how I would react if I were the judge. I think he was being extremely lenient. At the end of her 30 days in jail she’ll most likely post bail somehow. Doesn’t one only have to pay something around the amount of 10% to the bondsman? Either way, by the looks of that poor soul, she’ll be in and out of trouble the next decade of her life at least. It actually seemed as if she was trying to be flirty with him. I blame her parents, or whoever were her caretakers, they should have taught her to respect authority. It’s sad to watch people follow the footsteps of Rick Ross hoping to make a living this way. From the way she appears the nicest thing she owned was on her wrist. She probably spent most of her money on that stupid jewelry instead of spending it on something worthwhile. Hopefully the military will still take her she obviously needs a little structure and discipline. Lord knows prison won’t even begin to help with obtaining that. One last note, I do believe the people in the courtroom were being unprofessional as well, they should have left their gasps and giggles to themselves. This most likely helped spur her reaction.

  7. This is very funny situation, I bet you that the girl behind her was super nice to the judge after that. I think that some people dont take the law serious. Offcourse when you have rich parents you think that the law does not apply to you. In this case i think that the girl was clearly from the upper class and she did not have any respect for the jude. If i was a judge in that situation i would of raised that bond to even fifteen thousand, but maybe who knows that girl was really high on drugs and the judge just had a bad day.

  8. I was dumbfounded by this video. The girl put herself in a very bad situation by fliping the judge off. I do not think she was meaning to make the judge mad by acting out but she did kind of act nonchalant when talking to the judge and the judge seemed like he was having a bad day and was not going to have any of it. She should have acted right when talking to the judge and the judge should not take his bad day out on the girl by continuously adding on to her bond. The judge may not have even been having a bad day. There may have been more to the story I don't know but it seemed like he was taking his bad day out on her and she was not helping.

  9. Penelope Soto deserved what Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chromat gave her. The immaturity and inconsideration was extremely disrespectful. This act of deviance was very much unacceptable in the courtroom. He had the authority to take further action, and I am glad that he did. She was in a courtroom setting, but her manners did not match up to the surroundings. Even at the beginning, there is no form of seriousness in her tone or body language. She basically toyed with the Judge and made him aggravated him from the start. To keep adding on with her smart remarks, was stupid on her part. Making a comparison to a wealthy rapper made her appear arrogant and I'm sure she thought she would get off easy. The way I see it, if you're already in the courtroom because of your wrong doings, why make it worse? This teenage girl needs a wake up call, and I'm sure 30 days in jail will help with that. Thinking it was okay to disrespect authority makes me wonder how she acts at home.

  10. I feel like she should have gotten more time. She is completely immature and knew what she was doing. She thought everything was a joke when it really wasn't. She was being an idiot in the first place and then just made it worse with her trying to make everything a joke. I would give her the maximum of whatever I could just because she was making a mockery of a judge, and now, joke is on her. I would put money on it that she will be back in jail within a year of getting out just for being irresponsible again.

  11. Her immaturity shows that the punishment the judge gave her was perfect. Maybe after having to be in jail for thirty days and still having to pay the $10,000 she will learn to be serious when being in court. The teenager had already committed a crime by carrying Xanax and she stilled thought she was going to get away with her nonsense. The way she acted in court showed that she was not sorry and did not care for her own sentence. Apparently she thought she was hanging out with her friends or maybe even with her family. She was not raised the correct way. I do not know anything about her personal life, but if she did not have anyone to raise her the right way that still does not give her the right to act like that. As a teenager it should be common sense how you should act in a courtroom setting. “Actually, no” that sounds so ugly and it’s not the correct way to answer a question while being in court. If I was the judge right after she said that I would of gave her more days in jail instead of giving her another chance. I hope after having to be around other criminals and having to the eat food from jail for thirty days she will learn her lesson and won’t act so childish anymore.

  12. Penelope Soto was charged with possession of drugs. I cannot believe a young lady at the age of 18 would be so ignorant to treat the judge with so much disrespect. First she keeps laughing like it is some kind of joke, her being in court. Then she is not taking the judge seriously and thinks he is joking about the jewelry. You never see much judges ever joking around. The whole time she is show complete disrespect by flipping her hair and acting like she is on something. When the judge asked her if she was on any drugs and she said actually no, they should of tested her right then and there. Also when the judge set the bail at 5,000 she had to open her mouth and got called back to the judge. The fine was then set at 10,000. You think after that she would of kept quite, but no she opened up her big mouth again. She said F*** you and flipped off the judge. The crowd then went into an uproar. She ended up with 30 days in county court with a 10,000 bail. This all could have easily been avoided if she would have been respectful to the judge in the first place. If she would have been really nice she could of gotten a way lower bail or probation.

  13. I am not surprised by this teenager's reactions after reading this article. I think that today's teens are so disrespectful towards their parents, elderly, authorities, teachers, and etc. I think the judge did the right thing by raising her bond and assigning jail time. Maybe this will allow her time to think about what she has done as well as her actions in the future. Hopefully, this young lady will clean up her act and become a better person. If she decides not to, unfortunately, she will be in a world of trouble for the remainder of her life.

  14. This video was priceless. The judge was well within his rights to punish her further for a lack of respect. However, she apologized later to the judge and he let her go home. That I don’t agree with. She claimed to be high during the incident when she flipped him off. Although I believe she was high, it doesn’t excuse the behavior. Criminals don’t get to use the “I was high” excuse to get out of their crimes, so why should she? The judge released her after her apology. So what did she really learn? That “I’m sorry” makes it all go away? Did she learn her lesson? I doubt it. Furthermore, if she had been a male would he have let her go so easily? Probably not. Although I don’t think we’ll see her in court again, I think it will be because the video went viral and she looked like an idiot, not because she suddenly learned respect for the judicial system and judges. Nor do I think that she’ll see her behavior on the Xanax and stop taking it, although clearly she should avoid it for many reasons. In the end, I think she got off easy with a mere slap on the wrist. I doubt she learned her lesson for the right reasons.

  15. Now a days, teenagers are very disrespectful. We practice at a track located at the middle school right across Wesleyan and you won't believe how many kids go through there spitting out bad words like its a normal thing to do. I remember being thier age and boy was i scared to be disrespectful to anyone especially not an adult because I didn't want to get in trouble. I agree with what the judge did. Looking at the video even upset me. She just made it seem like she didn't have a care in world that she was in court and definately showed no remorse for what she did. I watched the follow up on this video and it showed Ms. Soto crying and apologizing for what she did. Why does it take something to get escalated for them to understand that life isn't a joke. I guess it really wasnt "fine" when the judge sentenced her to thirty days in county. I do have to say that the judge in the other video made a valid point. One that I feel should definately be taken into consideration. She said that the world is so quick to react on things that happen; we need to be proactive instead of waiting for bad incidents to occur.

  16. This was an unusual court hearing but funny to say the least. It seemed as if the girl was under the influence of the Xanax she was being prosecuted for. Or maybe she just thought it would be funny to mock the judge. I believe she deserved the punishment she received, it very disrespectful what she did and maybe now she will take the law more serious. Immature kids and adults these days feel that they can run over the law, maybe more prosecutions like this should be put into place and it will be an eye opener to future cases.

  17. I think this kid did not get her butt whooped enough as a child.
She is facing some serious charges. And she had no respect for the judge. She deserved everything she got. Rule number one don't ever piss off a judge, he has the power to make your life miserable. she will have to see him again and I am sure he will remember her and not be nice to her when it comes to sentencing. It just goes to show how disrespectful these kids are today. it is a damn shame. Being in jail is not a place to be. Ounce she goes back to her cell I am sure the prisoner will laugh at her dumb ass.
