  1. BP will have to pay a large sum of money back to the us government for the oil spill. This oil spill caused many problems to people jobs and the environment. However, this sum of money cannot fix the damage that has been called. Several employees are being charged due breaking rules and hiding information regarding the oil spill I find it shocking that the CEO of BP is not being held responsible for his own company.

  2. Personally I don’t feel that any sum of money is enough to fix the damage that was caused by this oil spill. The fact that lives were lost and that BP tried to cover up what had happen somebody should go to jail. By them going to jail that won’t bring the people that dies as a result of this explosion, but it will be a start of the healing process for these families, so they wont feel that their family members died for nothing and that the people that did it got away with just a slap on the wrist.

  3. How is it that the CEO gets to wipe his hands cleans? BP is paying all this money to the government but what about the families that lost individuals they love? Funny how just because you have money you can get yourself out of crime. More then just two employees should be getting charged with crimes.

  4. I don't think 4.5 billion dollars is nearly enough for endangering countless people all along the Gulf of Mexico. I think BP should be stripped of their privilege to drill anywhere on or near the United States. In my eyes, they have lost their chance by not only lying to Congress, but also just seeming an overall shady group. An employee deleted text messages about BP's response to the spill back in 2010. It's despicable and outright wrong to know that if someone has a load of money, they can simply walk free and blame it on a few peons who undoubtedly are being paid to take the fall. Again, BP should not be allowed to drill here anymore. Go fuck up somewhere else.

  5. BP committed a crime in 2010 and allowed oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico. They have given up on clean-up, saying they have done what they can and Mother Nature must do the rest. There is a deep layer of oil on below the waters of the Gulf of Mexico that will remain there until nature takes care of it. BP will not continue the efforts to clean the mess due to expense and a lack of morality.
It is still somewhat unclear as to what caused the spill. BP probably has a pretty good idea but will not share because it would provide fodder for more legal problems. They do not care about the harm they caused to the environment or about the deaths that occurred due to the incident. The people who were hurt do not matter; it all comes down to how they can spend the least amount paying fines.
It is also bothersome that Halliburton gets off with no penalty, even though they were involved with BP. I believe all parties involved should be penalized and that they should be required to clean up the spill within certain specifications. They should not be able to put off the clean up on Mother Nature.

  6. That is good the U.S. Goverment is making BP pay all of that money. but that is a drop in the bucket for all of the damage they committed due to negligence. What about all of the fishermen who was out of work and lost there way of living. Is BP going to reimburse them? Probable Not. What about the men who died when the explosion happened? I hope BP pays them. but no amount of money is going to bring back those mens lives or going to heal the families who lost there loved ones. No one in BP is going to jail. I think the person who should have been keeping up with the maintance should do some jail time. What about the enviroment yea that money can help with repairing the damage but it will not undue all of the damage that was done to the enviroment. The Gulf coast will take years to repair itself. Case in point the EXXON Valdez oil spil. That part of Alaska is still trying to recover and that happened over twenty yrs ago.

  7. It’s good that they have to take responsibility for their actions. The only thing is that the money won’t erase the damage that was done. Some people lost their lives and no amount of money is going to bring them back. So really out of this whole disaster the BP company only got fined,2 people charged with manslaughter and one person arrested for obstruction of justice. I don’t think they will do too much time. If anything probation. This is an example of a White Collar Crime. Let’s say this company was not a big company and didn’t make millions, I believe they would have done some jail time or got a stiffer sentence other that a fine. Money talks when it comes to major corporations, this seems to be the recipe to keep the people quiet and feel like justice is served. But I believe that they have been made a good example of and have learned their lesson. A lot of others are still suing so I think that they will make sure not to make another mistake like this again.

  8. This has to be one of the biggest white collar crimes of all time. I didn’t really know all of the under stuff, until I read this article. But I feel that justice is being serve because on top of the 4.5 billion they could be facing more fines as penalties when they appear in front of the Federal courts in 2013.But the fact that it took them this long to actually accept the fact that they messed up a take responsibility is truly crazy but then again it is America so I wasn’t truly surprised. But no amount of money cant reverse all the damage that was done parts of the world are still trying to recover from this disaster. And I didn’t see anything that said anything about the families and if they were receiving anything. And how is it that the CEO isn’t being held responsible at all for anything I mean they are a reflection of him.

  9. Huh...4.5 billion. It isn't near enough money for all the problems, heartache, and wrong doing they did and caused. That kind of money to them is the same as me paying a 1000.00 fine. Yeah its a lot of money to come up with, but its doable and you can recover from it. I think all their suits, like the CEO, president and VP should all have to aid in the clean up. In every aspect of what they caused they should have to help out, along with the fine. There is just not enough accountability for these big corporations that commit White Collar crimes, because if there were then at least a handful of these companies would not do what they do. Money and power are their bottom lines, and until you take that away from them and hit them where it really hurts, then they will continue to keep cutting corners and putting peoples lives at stake to get to it.

  10. Final Verdict for BP is In!!! 4.5 BILLION!!!! Justice served????

In the loss of life justice is never served….
what has transpired is the beginning of the transference of payments…
one entity wiping the hand of another…
BP may be a company, but a company is run by humans and the nature of the beast is cover up when the mess is too massive and that is what this company tried to do, the casualties were life, business, nature and economy/revenue.
On one hand, the workers knew there were work place hazards, so really you work at your own risk, and in this day in time that is in any industry or work place environment, but no one expects to go to work one day and to never return.
Maybe had certain safety issues had been addressed from the beginning instead of covered up BP would never had this catastrophes , maybe they were not aware, but when awareness was realized, the crime came into play when lives were intentionally put in harm’s way; but then again this could have all been just a workplace hazard if not for the lies, lies, lies…
so is justice served??? not really, you can’t place a value on a life… where as the company will continue to go on and make more money and perhaps correct all the defaults that caused the first havoc, those lives that were lost cannot go on.

  11. It is never not enough for the families that lost their jobs and everything because of the spill. I think that it is sad to see how long this whole thing took place, and that the employees were trying to delete the messages from their phones about the spill. It is just sad to see that the live of an individual is valued for so less and less. I think that this was one of the biggest white collar or not the biggest crime of that category ever committed.

  12. it is good that BP is being forced to pay back to all those companies they caused problems to, but no amount of money can help the families who lost loved ones during this spill. BP trying to cover up the amount of oil spilled each day and lying to make the amount look less is a typical white collar crime like we have been learning about all semester. they are getting what they deserve, but money cant undo the past and the mistakes.

  13. BP paying 4.5 billion to the government over the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico might sound like so much to people like you and me but to BP it is nothing. They are getting away with so much by not having to pay more and plus it has taken two years to come to this settlement. I am actually surprised and glad that two of the employees are being charged with manslaughter. But the fact that the CEO of BP does not get any type of punishment when he is the one that oversees everything does not make any sense. The money that is being paid out does not even come close to help fix what has happened to the environment and everything else the settlement is supposed to cover. They did not even address the lives that were lost. Those are said to have different law suits filed against BP but no amount of money can bring back those people to their families or help with the loss. Just because they have money they can pay off the government or other people and companies. They get a slap on the wrist compared to what should happen to them.

  14. $.5 billon dollars is a HUGE amount of money to a normal person such as me and you, but when it comes to one of the biggest oil companies in the united states i dont think it is enough. Bp before the oil spill was probably worth in the hundreds of billions, so fining them 4.5 i dont think serves justice. The impact of the oil spill was enormous! Not only did it kill off millions of animals but it also killed off business for thousands of americans. the beaches were covered in oil so no tourist were going to the shore lines, and fisherman that made all their money in the gulf had no way to fish because all of their product was killed.

  15. Justice wasn't served considering BP is the largest oil company in the world. $4.5 billion is nothing to them, in a way they still got off easy. The BP spill affected many people lives and BP doesn't realize that. 11 lives were lost in the explosion and although two BP employees are being charged for manslaughter and BP has been fined, no amount of money can replace the individuals who lost their lives. BP talks about how the coast is getting back to normal but they won’t acknowledge the 11 lives that were lost. I think justice has yet to be served, BP should pay more money, they should be held responsible for their actions, and more than two people need to be charged for the lives of the 11 employees who lost their lives that day.

  16. I’m glad that BP is being forced to pay 4.5 billion dollars. However, I don’t 4.5 billion dollars is going to hurt a company that just reported a profit of 5.5 billion in the last quarter. Most of all there is no dollar amount that can be placed on the loss of loved ones. I hope that the judge will hand out more fines to the fisherman and other local business that suffered a financial loss. Also the individuals are prosecuted for their actions in this ordeal.

  17. 4.5 Billion dollars to a huge sum of money to have to pay. However, I feel BP owes that amount. The oil spill destroyed part of the water, and killed wildlife. Also, 11 workers died from this spill, and every life is important. This spill happened due to neglect and I feel they owe every penny. Although, some feel the settlement is just a slap on the wrist. However, I would have to slightly agree with that because “The well on the sea floor spewed an estimated 172 million gallons of crude in the Gulf, fouling marshes and beaches, killing wildlife and shutting vast areas to commercial fishing.” I hate the idea of animals dying, or becoming ill because of something humans caused. I feel as if the money cannot fix the damage that has been done. People with large sums of money always seem to be able to earn a “get out of jail free card.”

  18. Although 4.5 billion dollars seems a lot to pay it is justice that has been justly served. However, I feel like they got off easy. What is 4.5 billion dollars to a company that makes roughly 5.6 billion a year? BP should have been punished more harshly than they were and in a timelier manner. It took our government two years to punish BP and by the time they got punished they have made roughly 10.2 billion dollars, which easily covers their fines. Not only did their spill damage thousands of miles of ocean, and kill thousands of marine wildlife, but the spill also killed 11 people. If a person would have done this, they would be sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty depending on the state, but since this is a major company the best we can do is fine them. It makes me sick. Also many people lost a ton of business due to the BP oil spill such as fisherman, shrimpers, charter captains, property owners, restaurant owners, and hotel owners. I believe the BP fine should at least be two years of their annual income, so roughly 11 billion dollars. Then on top of that they should make settlements to the families of the 11 dead, and then pay money to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

  19. Really, i dont think that 4.5 billion is enough to 'punish' BP for their oil spill. for a company like this, 4.5 is chump change. I wish they could be required to pay 4.5 billion a year maybe, for the rest of the companys existence, to organizations and things that help preserve the wildlife since their oil spill killed so many innocent animals, and has made a huge impact on the nature of the gulf coast. i think that's only fair.
and i think that the head officers like the CEO and such, of BP, should be taken down from their positions, and never given the chance to run another company because their actions here proved that they are in no way qualified to run a company without totally screwing things up and trying to lie and cover their mistakes.

  20. I really don’t think 4.5 million is enough when BP put lives in danger from this oil spill. Not only did BP put lives in danger but they also put wildlife at risk as well. It seems like a bigger sentence would have been carried out for something like this. It seems like some people would have gotten fired over something like this. Oil spills are a really big deal and very dangerous and it seems likes its just getting a tap on the hand. With as much money as this company makes they could help a lot more for the damage they cost. Although 4.5 million is a lot of money it doesn’t seem enough to help for who their hurting. This seriously took innocent lives and the only thing that happened was a fine and some of the employees being charged. I also think more people should be charged along with those few employees. That doesn’t seem right.

  21. BP has caused so much damage to the environment. Why is this company not going bankrupt? this company should be holding on to its last pennies because of all the damage they have done. but yet the government is steady giving them contracts worth billions and they are still causing damage to the environment. as long as they are making a healthy profit they can care less about our environment.

  22. It is clear that the BP corporation is getting slap on the wrist for the billions of dollars worth of damage that was done the gulf. The fine is truly a drop in the bucket for the corporation and it seems as if they have no excuse for why the spill happened in the first place. They corporation seem cold and unapoligitic for their actions.

  23. That's it? Big businesses, because they have the money, are getting away with a slap on the wrist. They should get fined more than double that amount and the people in charge of that company should be fired and serve time in jail ESPECIALLY for lying and covering up what has happened. They should also be paying the families for their losses do to their own selfish ways of being less efficient just to be cheaper and faster. I feel like they should be giving the families and also the wildlife funds a bigger chunk of the fines that in themselves should be larger in the first place. I think that everyone who was effected by it in some way should get some sort of share of it from a whole different fine.

  24. There is no amount of money that can make this rite, everyone was hurt. A lot of these peoples incomes came from the waters, and also the people that would buy their goods from the fisherman. And also the decrease of tourism, many people live off of these profits, but when this happened it almost brought all tourism to a complete halt. They should be forced to pay much more then what they did, but in reality there was no amount that could make this better.
