  1. The fact that BP might receive fines that could amount to tens of billions of dollars doesn’t seem like a bad thing to me. Obviously they caused the damage that killed 11 workers and caused the worst oil spill in the U.S so why wouldn’t they be responsible to pay these fines. Furthermore, BP still is denying that they were negligent in any way but yet there are findings that prove otherwise. BP doesn’t care about taking responsibility all they care about is covering themselves and trying to pay as little in fines as possible by saying they were not negligent. Is BP is taking measures to make sure another oil spill doesn’t happen again? You see these commercials on TV saying that BP is doing its part to rebuild the damage that was done as a cause of the oil spill but then in this article it states that they are being investigated for a potential new problem. If they were negligent before they will be negligent again as long as they don’t suffer any serious repercussions. I think they should pay the maximum fines possible. And at that money isn’t even enough to pay for the damage they have causes. No amount of fines paid can replace the lives lost nor will it heal the families and the communities pain that the oil spill cost. And on top of that the oil spilled killed sea life as well and polluted the water. I just don’t understand how corporations can be negligent and all they have to do is pay fines an continue on with their business and gaining profit.

  2. BP's negligence is becoming sort of a trend. This wasn't their first major oil spill and it certainly won't be their last if nothing gets done about it, especially if they end up receiving the lower end of the fine penalty. 5 billion dollars to a company like BP is like taking 20 dollars out of an average Americans wallet, sure it might hurt a little but in the end its not that much money. I believe they should receive the full fine of roughly 20 billion dollars. On top of that the government should make an offshore drilling committee that is responsible for checking and regulating all offshore drills, especially BPs. This committee should also be given the power to shut down the oil if it doesn't meet the required standards, just like they do to restaurants if they are unsanitary. In the end BP has to pay dearly for this because not only did they kill 11 of their employees but they also cost of the government millions if not billions of dollars trying to clean up their massive oil spill. I fear if this doesn’t happen, then we may very well have another oil spill from BP in the next couple of years.

  3. It's time to say enough is enough! Fine them on the high end of the scale because any "idiot" can see the negligence. Set the example for these multi-billion dollar companies to exercise proper maintenance and regulations. I am sure if the BP had even followed the MINIMUM checks and procedures these type of problems would be at least minimized. Ridiculous.

  5. When it comes to BP, I believe they should be held accountable for their actions. In today society companies like to try to scapegoat the law in order it gain a profit. I would say that BP did know that something on the oilrig should have been maintained better. In addition, BP did not respond in a timely matter to the situation. They went a couple of days without notifying the United States government that there was a problem. In addition, many people lost their jobs due the oil situation. BP did end up paying some money to those people who lost their jobs. However, the amount they were given could not make up for the damage that was already done.

  6. So BP is denying any negligence concerning the worst oil spill in US history. It is not surprising that BP hopes levied fines will be in the low range, and they will probably place the blame on others, including the government agency in charge of drilling safety, which granted it a drilling regulation exemption; however, it certainly appears as if there were a failure by BP management to consider the risks and, instead, to concentrate on saving time and money. BP has a history of failing to follow regulations and has pled guilty and been fined several times. Norwegian authorities are now investigating the safety of BP’s production platforms. A definite pattern has emerged about BP’s commitment to safe operations. Drilling for oil below sea level is dangerous business, and safety regulations need to be implemented and strictly enforced. The extent and long term consequences of the Gulf spill are not yet known, and, at the very least, BP is negligent and should be severely fined. However, a few criminal convictions against the company and those employees who were involved would send an even stronger message that the strategy of profits over environmental concerns and worker safety will no longer be tolerated. The threat of prison would be a great motivator in the prevention of future oil spills.

  7. I'm really baffled and disgusted as to how any investigating office can call this anything but a gross negligence on account of BP cutting corners and all together omitting vital inspections. As of 2009 the Deepwater Horizon needed over 3500 hours of maintenece. It had not had an audit assuring its safety and performance since 2000! For 9 years a company could go that long with no assurance to the public of its faults and corrections. And the fact that the outcome if not functioning properly could have catastrophic consequences solidifies their lack of respect to the people who work on it, live in surrounding areas, or the many organisms so horribly affected. The only thing they truly value is the almighty dollar.

  8. Why should BP get to pay a lower fine? Its like they are only getting a slap on the wrist for cutting corners and not doing their job in the first place and that is not right or fair. People’s lives were changed forever and a price can’t be put on that. If it were up to me they would be black listed and have to pay a fine, because they might decide to cut more corners on other jobs that they may have in the future. Lowering the fine to me is telling BP that it was okay that they didn’t do their job right that’s not the case; because this is know as the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

  9. I like how politics became involved with a disater that ruined peoples lives. Eleven people were killed due to negligence and laziness on the part of BP. Lets not forget what BP stands for British Petrouleum. They are not even an american company they are a British oil corporation. Why is the American government protecting them? Something to ask are selfs. Reall it does not matter what if it was an American company or a foregin corporation that caused the oil spill. The bottom line is there was an oil spill that killed people and affected a whole lot of peoples lives. From the fishermen who live off the ocean to fishery economy. This is a classic example of a big corportation flexing its muscle and walking over the smaller person. BP should not be getting any tax write offs. They ruined the enviroment that will be around for years. BP should be made to pay the max amount in the fine. I think that some people should be in jail. The money will not bring back the eleven people that have been killed in the accident.Politics should not even be in the mix, but they are so we will have to wait and see what happens in the future.

  10. Same story different company nothing will change. I think when we read an article like this it is there to incite our anger. A company named Exxon had this same situation occur and sure it kept them down for a little while but they continue to be very profitable. It will be the same way here we will hit BP with all kinds of fines they will pay them out. We will still allow them to drill and why? The old mighty dollar its power is stronger than a very small portion that actually cares for the environment. Our government will still have their pockets lined by the oil lobbies thus no change will occur. Obviously we had the EPA before the deep water horizon and probably some other government agency that was supposed to be checking on BP where were they? I think we should be asking ourselves who is in power in the positions that over see these types of companies? I think we don't want to ask ourselves that because basically we are all too lazy to care. We say we care but when? When animals are dying on our shores, or when we can't get that crab dinner at the local restaurant because their all dead? These agencies where suppose to be policing these companies and they don't. This problem with BP did not happen overnight this was months of oversight. I can say this that this will not be the last environmental disaster of its kind I am fearful it is just a beginning.

  11. BP has settled to pay 4.5 billions of dollars to the U.S. government due to the devasting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which occurred in 2010. They will also face criminal charges due to deaths which also occurred and for lying to Congress. Also, this is one of the biggest corporate criminal penalties in U.S. history. The only person who seems to have been arrested was a former BP engineer and that was for obstruction of justice. There should be other BP officials who should be accountable for this oil spill explosion and face criminal charges. This oil spill spewed millions of gallons of oil which affected the beaches, killed wildlife and fishes. Fishermen were affected by this disaster oil spill, because this is the way they make a living. There was negligent, misconduct on part of BP and this destroyed their reputation.

  12. It sounds to me like BP has in ways dug their own grave. Everything was going fine until reports of negligence started surfacing. The Department of Justice claims there was negligence and misconduct. If that isn’t bad enough, Norwegian authorities have started to investigate a leak off the coast of Norway. All of these factors could lead to a drastic ascension in BP’s fine. Personally, I think this punishment is necessary. Just because a company generates ungodly amounts of revenue doesn’t mean they should be able to cheat the system. It’s the type of crime that’s been around forever. The act of avoiding precautions to save a couple bucks. Not only did BP kill eleven employees, but they were responsible for the worst spill the Gulf Coast has ever seen. Millions of wildlife were killed. BP deserves the hammer. I think that they should be made an example to others that if you participate in things like this there will be severe consequences. People and business need to be held accountable for these type of acts. This should not be something where they get off easy, especially if there is evidence of similar things occurring in Norway.

  13. I understand that we need crude oil, but I think that we need the sea to be clean a little bit more. I'm not against industrialization, but I believe that we should do as little damage as possible to this planet...at least until we can find another one that we can mess up. I feel that these oils companies should be fined as much as possible any and every time they cause any type of damage to the environment.

  14. BP should be held accountable for their actions. They are responsible for the worst spill in U.S. history and somehow they feel it wasn't their fault. BP thought everything was going to be ok considering it was an election year. They probably figured with it being an election year they could pay the lowest fine if they backed the candidate that they felt would be beneficial for them. That plan backfired and every crime BP has committed is being released. BP is more concerned with their money rather than the lives lost during the oil spill, the effect that spill had on the environment, and the lives of the individuals within that area. BP should be fined the highest amount possible. Hopefully it will teach them a lesson.

  15. I really hope that BP: is given the highest fine that can be imposed. They did not give a damn about the damage they caused, and the lives that were lost due to their negligence. On top of the damage that was caused, BP lied about the amount of oil that was leaking, and there is no telling about what else they lied about. If they are given a small fine, I think this will be a slap in the face to the people who lost loved ones, and suffered financially.

  16. BP deserves to have to pay a settlement. 11 workers died, and not to mention wildlife and the water was messed with. They need to keep the Clean Water Act in its mind. Also, the article stated “It was all going so well for BP and it denies being negligent.” Really? I do not understand how they can deny being negligent for one of the United Sates worst oil spills. I feel it is clear that BP demonstrated gross negligence. I honestly feel that BP’s crimes are finally being posted out for the world to see.

  17. BP's carelessness has caused a lot of problems in the gulf. workers were killed, companies on the gulf experienced a downfall in business because of the huge mess, and a huge amount f money had to go towards helping to clean the mess. bp deserves to have to pay a large sum for their mistakes. they were caught lying to the government about the amount of oil spilling each day and an investigation is being done to see if they have been keeping up withb maintenance on the machines. any amount of money bp is fined will not bring back the deaths of people or undo the mistake they did.

  18. So far every article that I have read on the punishment of the BP corporation, the fines are within the corporation's means of paying. I honestly do not see how this will prevent the company from prevent future "accidents" that kill innocent people and literally waste billions of dollars into the gulf.

  19. I think BP deserves to be fined billions of dollars. They have killed workers on the job site. Also lets not forget about all the animals that died or got sick by all of the oil spills. It is sad BP is still denying such negligence that they have caused. We have so much proof to take them down you think that they would just admit it already that they were in the wrong. They just do not want to take the responsibly into their own hands and admit to all of all the bad that they have caused. There have been patterns and rumors that BP is still having oil spills and still denying them. It seems like there is going to be no stopping the oil spills. I do not know what else there is to do. I hope that they get fined big time for what they have done, and step up to the plate and take responsibility for all they have done. The blood is in their hands metaphorically speaking. With saying that I hope they get fined big time I am kind of skeptical, because if we ask for too much money then that’s taking away money to help the oil spill and fix their problems. Maybe we just make them use all this money to help fix the problems causing these oil spills.
