  1. This kid was a minor, but he knew about the Aurora shooting. I think the questions that should be asked is if he really understood what happened in Aurora? If he did not understand what happened then he should be told that he messed up. But if he did understand then he shoud get the book throwen at him. Maybe a lil taste of jail will make him think twice before he does something stupid like that again. It just shows how insensitive some people should be. Another question is where was this kids parents at?? They should be held some what responsible as well. Ultimatley they have the responsibility of there children.

  2. He was 17, he was old enough to understand the Aurora shooting, and that what he was doing would be insensitive. He probably got the idea for the whole thing from the Aurora shooting. I don't believe he should go to jail since he did not have a weapon on his person, but he should face punishment enough to know what he did was wrong. He had to know that he would be scaring more than just his friends, and he is very lucky that people just ran away, before cops arrested him. It could have had an entirely different outcome, such as people attacking him in fear of their own lives. How were they supposed to know that he was just planning on scarring his friends, and not another movie theater attack.

  3. I feel like wrong is wrong, no matter the age. If you are 17, you should by now what is right for wrong. He even claimed that knew bout the Aurora shootings. I feel like if someone would of explained in depth of the situation then this would of never taken place. To me, this involves all age groups. If you do not hear the explanation in depth of the seriousness of a particular situation, then you will not take it serious. This would be very stupid if he actually understood the Aurora shooting and he should go to jail. No excuses.

  4. Although this was a terrible situation in Aurora where many people lost their lives and others horribly wounded I do not know if sensationalizing what this teen did is a good idea. He did this whole wearing the mask thing for attention and that's what the media gave him so it worked. We may want to ask ourselves is wearing a mask to a theater illegal? I have been too many movie going experiences where people are in full costume and they have not been arrested. I do feel as if what this young man did was insensitive and if he incited some sort of dangerous situation to occur which it sounds like he did then he should be charged as such. The comments concerning the where are the parents thing and they should be held responsible must be from people who have no children well I should say no teenagers at least because if they did they would know that as a parent you cannot control what your teenagers do. You can hope that you have imparted the wisdom to act with heart and mind when they leave your home but you can't make them do anything. Maybe an appropriate punishment would be that this boy should go to the hospitals where some of these people are still struggling to live. Maybe he should meet with the loved ones of those who are dead so as to listen to their stories of heartache. This boy needs a wakeup call not jail.

  5. The situation that occurred in Aurora was a tragic situation, the families are still grieving, and others are still living in fear when going to late night movies. But, honestly, do we really think that this teenager realized what he was doing? We were all teenagers once upon a time, we never really thought things through, we just did it and thought about the consequences later. I don't think he even thought about this issue bringing about fear to others, just to scare his friends. Bottom line, I do believe some community service can help him start thinking before acting. I also believe that an apology should be given to those families who lost loved ones in this tragic situation.

  6. This 17 year old teenager was old enough to understand about the shooting in Aurora and should have known that this prank he was doing would not be taken lightly. He felt that by wearing this mask he was just simply trying to scare his friends. His actions were in very poor taste and he was bound to know that this would stir up the public. We are living in a time when people see others act or dress strangely that this causes them to become observant and suspicious. I feel that he should spend a few days in jail with counseling to make him understand that this sort of behavior is unacceptable especially after what happened in the theatre in Aurora.

  7. Was the joke in bad taste? Probably but I don’t think he should have been arrested. This just shows how fear driven we have become as a society. It shouldn’t matter if he knew about the shooting or not, it was a joke. Now he’s going to have a record and this may affect any chances he may have had of get a good job or into a good school. I’m for the kid, hey we have to give him credit for at least waiting for the crowd to die down before he did it.

  8. I think that people are being far too over dramatic about this. I highly doubt there is a law in Colorado that states that it is illegal to wear a mask in a movie theater, and if there is, whoever put that law into effect should be stripped of their rank, because that's just dumb. Sure, he was insensitive, but a lot of people in America ARE insensitive. They only care about their own endeavors at the expense of others but we don't go around arresting those ass hats do we? Has anyone been on reddit or 4chan lately? People on there could not care less about how insensitive others might perceive their posts to be, and nobody gets on there complaining about how offensive they are. Could you guess why? It's comedy. Sure, it's humor in poor taste, but scaring the shit out of people is a classic pastime for pranksters. It's not like he pulled out a Dillinger and pretended to mow everyone down, he simply walked into the theater and people over reacted.

  9. At the age of 17, the boy should know and comprehend what had happened at the Aurora shootings. A senior in high school that is roughly one year away from college should understand that certain things are too sensitive to joke about. He had to have known that he wasn’t just going to scare his friends but everyone else around him. He is quite lucky that no one tried to beat him up out of fear. In this case he was lucky that the police apprehended him for his own health. Also where were his parents? I would love to hear a statement from his parents about what they think. Also I found it very interesting that after he got arrested, he still plans on wearing the joker costume again next year. So, maybe it’s just me but if I got arrested by the police and my story went on the internet, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t state openly that I was planning on wearing the same thing next year. In my opinion there is something messed up with this kid, and I’m glad he was charged with 5 separate counts of misdemeanor menacing and I hope he gets evaluated by a psychiatrist.

  10. Would he have been arrested if he had done this before the shooting or if the shooting had never happened? Being it so recently after the Aurora, CO massacre makes this a crime. If he had done this before the incident, I’m sure no one would have thought about arresting a 17 year-old boy for menacing. I know he hadn’t thought it out completely before he did it, but how many of us didn’t do something stupid as a teenager? Now, he has a criminal record for something that someone in another would get a slap on the wrist. I see nothing wrong with an unarmed teen walking around in a joker mask.

  11. I Don’t care how old you are you know that doing something stupid like this would get you in trouble. Yes I understand it is a minor but he even said he knew about the Aurora shooting so the question is if you know that the wound of that day is still fresh why even try to be funny so I feel that for mocking the this that the punishment is fit they had to make a example so that nobody else would try to do something similar to what this kid did. But I feel like they punishment still isn’t enough. But I bet now that this happened it will happen again. But this kid should be warning that everything you think in your head doesn’t need to be done.

  12. This kid wore a mask to a movie! How is this against the law? As long as he's not breaking the law doesn't he have the right to wear what he wants? This country is too caught up on feelings. Just because some people might feel that wearing a joker mask might be in bad taste doesn't make it so. Last time I checked, this was a free country. We have to stop living in fear.

  13. Since he is 17 years old he knows right from wrong. He told the officers that he went in with the mask as a prank towards his friends. Which lets us know he clearly knew that it was cause some amount of fear, but I do not belive that he had thought about the reactions of the rest of the crowd. Because of this I belive he should still be charged with the 5 counts of misdemeanors but I do not think jail time would fit the "crime".

  14. This is very weird situation, off course the aurora shootings were very serious and the kid should know better that it could be inappropriate to wear joker's mask to the movie theater after the shootings. Last time i jokers face was not illegal, and i dont think that the kid should get the 5 counts of misdemeanors for it. They did not found no weapons or anything on him so he could not provoke a fear and its not the James Holmes Halloween mask that he was wearing.

  15. The Aurora shooting was a very serious and tragic event. Being from Colorado, I know people who were at the theater the night of the shooting and they said they still have dreams about the terrible event. This kid was old enough to know it was not right to wear a mask to the theater to "scare his friends". he deserves to get punished for his careless thinking.

  16. The only thing I can say about this immature kid is he should go to detention and maybe it will be an effective scare tactic for him! He knew what he was doing when he wore the mask into that movie theater… knowing there had already been a massacre with same mask; we live in a culture of fear and a culture of violence which often times are hand in hand; the scenario could have ended quite different for this young man; someone could have seen him first with the mask and assumed a copy cat circumstance and shot him for fear of the same thing happening again.
we live in a world where sensitivity and awareness is the new sixth sense

  17. I think the Joker mask prank was a little too soon. The Aurora shooting was a horrible massacre; people and their families are still affected by it today. The student was seventeen years old and stated that he knew about the theater shooting with James Holmes. He should have known that when we went into the theater wearing that mask that it would strike fear into others, not just his friends which was who he intended to scare. But on the other side he is a seventeen year old teenage boy. Of course he did not realize about the effects of the others. He was just trying to be funny in front of his friends. What teenager did not do that when they were younger? He was charged with five counts of misdemeanor menacing. It is not like he had a gun or anything on him to where he could do anything illegal. Those will now be on his record and can possibly prevent him from getting into college or getting a job in the future. If this were to happen prior to the Aurora shootings he would have not been arrested and went on his way. He did not break the law by wearing the mask he is just an insensitive teenager who did not think before he went out.

  18. I have mixed feelings about this situation. Why should everyone have to pay for someone elses mistake; let me explain. Just because somone who wore a joker mask killed people in the theater, that shouldnt mean that no one should be allowed to wear a mask. Not everyone who wears a joker mask wants to kill people. Its simialar to 9/11. We are told not to judge people in the airport so what difference does it make in this situation. Then again (the mixed feeliongs part), he was old enough to understand what happened so why push any buttons and risk getting in trouble. There should be no excuses.

  19. As serious as the Aurora Dark Knight shooting was, anyone including minors should not joke around with this case. Even though the kid said it was a joke, authorities aren't going to play with any accounts that are somewhat similar. I do not think they should have charged the minor with that many accounts of a misdemeanor though, instead they should of just fined him. People are going to continue to joke around with this, because at first it didn't seem real.

  20. This story disturbs me very much. I cant believe that at the age of 17 this kid thought it was okay to try and make people relive the fear of that day in Aurora. Wearing a mask that symbolizes the tragedy into the same setting that it occurred is not okay! At this age he should know right from wrong and he should know that many people were still very shaken from the occurrence!

  21. I am not sure I believe that the boulder teen did not know about the shootings. If he did know about the shootings then he should have known it was very wrong to spook people like that. People do not take jokes like that very easily. Also, I do not see the fun in a prank like that. The shooting were all over the news, and the internet, so how could the teen not know about the shootings. I just find that statement from him untruthful. I also do not believe jail time would fit this crime because he did not want to harm anyone. If he did, then he would have had a weapon. This teen is very immature, and needs to be careful with his decisions. He knew what he was doing was unreasonable.

  22. I think this could go either way, people are either going to be really hot or really cold about this. This kid obviously doesnt have any sense in what he's doing, for lack of a better word what he did here was just plain stupid, dumb, thoughtless and insensitive. Knowing what happend just a few weeks ago, i dont know what was going through his head that made him think doing something like this would be okay, or funny. I dont think he should get charged with much if anything because technically all he did was wear a mask, I think it'd be a totally different story if he had shown up there with the mask and brought a fake gun, or threatened everyone or something like that, but the article doesnt say anything like this, and in fact says about the exact opposite. I think this kid just needs a good old fashioned butt whooping, i dont care how old he is.

  23. I kind of figured after reading the title that this was going to be a kid being insensitive and arrogant. This seems very ridiculous for a 17 year old to pull a prank like that. Many people were injured and killed in the accident he was “making fun of. Not only was this a kid acting dumb and being very insensitive this also caused another panic for movie goers. So much for playing a prank on some friends. This obviously is still a very touchy topic for not only the town but everyone. This should have been punished very harshly and swiftly. Even though the kid is a minor he still understood what he was doing and how this would scare people. Obviously he didn’t care though which is even worse. Even though the kid didn’t hurt anyone he did cause unnecessary panic in people and put more emphasis on making jokes and pranks about the terrible incident. I think its very good he got some type of punishment for this. I think letting this go would just show people its okay to make fun of the situation and scare people.

  24. He is 17. He knows better than to do something like that when he knows about what happened. I don't think he thought that through completely though. He didn't think of the other people who were in the theater who definitely knew what had happened. He's one of those dumb kids that really needs to just grow up. He is in college now and that just isn't something funny to joke about. There could have been someone in there who might have been part of the shooting or had someone affected by it in their life, but he obviously just was not thinking, which is not an excuse, and it is good that he got some sort of punishment for it. He knows right from wrong, he just wasn't using his brain.

  25. When I read this I was completely shocked. I can’t believe somebody would actually do something as what I read. I understand he was only seventeen when he deiced to wear that mark to the theater and that at seventeen sometimes we don’t think of the consequences or think about how our actions will affect other around us. I think at the moment when he though about doing what he did he thought it would be a great idea to scare his friends he never thought that it would scare others. Never the less I think the punishment he received was exactly what he deserved, he should have thought about what he was doing and how many people he would hurt with his thoughtless actions.
People should really think of what they are about to do in a public facility, whether they are seventeen or thirty-five wearing a joker mask to a theater not long after the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado is not a justified action for anybody. People who think something like this is a funny joke are insensitive and have absolutely no respect for the victims and the victim’s family’s of shootings and other tragic events.

  26. The Aurora shooting was still fresh and any pranks and whatnot were definitely not going to be taken lightly. The boy was clearly aware of his doings and he should also be fully aware that actions come with consequences. Although he was merely trying to scare his friends, there is a time and place for everything under the sun. The kid was not taken into the consideration the terror that the Aurora shooting brought. This minor played a joke that was extremely insensitive towards the experience that the victims and their families experienced on July 20th. Lives were lost in a horrific way, and the fact that somebody would want to portray the monster that did so, is frightening on its own. I'm sure the kid had no intention of harming anyone, but I still feel as if he got what he deserved.

  27. Although the "horror of the Aurora Century 16 theater massacre" was a very terrible event and shall always be remembered they shouldn't have punished a 17 year old as bad as they did. He is only 17, and still young. A lot of young teenagers make big mistakes just trying to be funny. He meant no harm he just wanted to make a joke. I do not agree what he did was right but he should of not been punished as much as he was. He had no weapons and no one was injured during the scare. Now the 17 year old should be punished some way but not by going to jail. He needs more of a parental guidance and punishment. Also he should not of taken James Holmes killings of "12 people and wounding 58 more during a midnight screening of the 'The Dark Knight Rises,' on July 20th in Auroa" as an idea to joke about and go to the theater and dress like the joker. It was not a pleasant joke and scared people out of the theater. He did not mean to scare everyone he just wanted to scare his friends and make a joke out of it.

  28. Seeing the young man was 17, he was old enough to understand the Aurora shooting, and what he was doing would be wrong. I'm guessing he got the idea from the Aurora shooting. I think what he did was wrong and very scary but i dont think its bad enough to be a jail sentence. He had to have known he was scaring not only his friends but others and was very lucky he wasn't arrested. He is lucky the people did not react in other ways than just running off. People could have reacted by wanting to protect themselves and could have hurt him or themselves very badly. He is very lucky this did not become a bigger deal than it was because someone could have been seriously injured or possible worse.

  29. This is crazy! This was a 17 year old kid who wanted to play a joke on his friends this is the best example of a prank gone bad. This kid knew about the Aurora shooting and because of his age he should have known that wearing that mask would make others nervous. I think another question that needs to be asked is, to what extent was he trying to scare his friends? Was his plan to jump out from around a corner and scare them or was there a little more to it. Although this was only meant to be a joke this was still really insensitive because that night in Aurora many individual were harmed and lives were lost, some people just don’t think about their actions. I think that his sentence is correct if he did not intend to cause other to fear for their lives but if he did have any intent to make a joke out of the Aurora shooting then I think the sentence should have been a little harsher just to make him think about playing a practical joke like this ever again.

  30. When you become a certain age, you should know when it okay to do certain things. This kid should have known that it was never going to be okay to do this, especially not long after the shooting that had just taken place. This kid should of had greater charges. He clearly knew what he was doing when he decided to pull the prank, personally I think they should have made an example out of him and showed everyone what could happen to them if they decided to be immature and try to scare people due to an incident that had just taken place.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do not think that this kid should have been arrested for wearing this mask to the movie theater. He clearly did state that he was aware of the Aurora shooting; however, I don’t think that he was thinking clearly. I think he honestly meant it as a joke for his friends. Instead of being arrested the officials should have spoken with him and advised him of the impact that he caused on the individuals. I know that in today’s society, people’s actions should not be taking lightly, but in this instance, this kid did not have a clue as to what he was doing. As someone stated, it was a batman movie that was showing and he was just dressing as the joker as a prank.
