Central Park Rapist - Split Personality

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/central_park_rapist_headed_monster_QSCPARH6dBBDWwzciedmeO So what do you so with a rapist who is diagnosed with split personality?

  1. So my question is why was David Albert Mitchell still out on the streets after he got out of prison in his hometown, Jenkinjones. There are many arguments between cases that deal with murder, rape, and assault with a person suffering from split personality disorder. If Mitchell was diagnosed at age 14 why was he not placed in a mental institution after they saw that “Johnny” one of his alter personalities is dangerous to society. Why wasn’t Mitchell on any medication or carefully being observed? His own hometown was afraid of him and they had done nothing but chase Mitchell way into a bigger city. If Mitchell had been dealt correctly with he should have been in a facility being cared for and given treatment for. It baffles me that even after so many elderly ladies he has raped or tried to murder and a murder count still standing behind him why is he free out in the streets. Judges should already know by reading her record that Mitchell is clinically unstable to even function in a society and they still let him run reckless. I do not know how you would deal with this case without knowing criminal laws that define insanity and if their state has even implemented the personality disorder as something that can help Mitchell instead of going to prison again for another 8 or more years and be released again. It would help as terrible as it sounds to confine Mitchell into a state facility for mentally ill.

  2. How does this even happen? They saw the signs, he had just gotten out of custody (for reasons I have yet to understand) and people, from a mostly humble town from what I understand, actually wanted this man dead. If I were his brother, I would have openly welcomed him home so that one less chunk of cancer could be ridden from this Earth. You might be thinking "what if it was your brother?" I have a brother, and I love him to death but if he was a danger to others, I wouldn't want him out of careful watch let alone alive. I really do feel that strongly against dangerous people. What if it was me? I totally wouldn't mind being put into some sort of mental institution until I got better. Why wasn't this guy on medication at LEAST? I mean everyone, it seems, didn't like Mr. Mitchell and knew he was "bad news." They should have locked him up for longer. History tends to repeat itself and this is a clear example of that. He raped many women before and the first chance he got, he did it again. What makes them think that locking him up just ONE MORE TIME, handing out chances like we're all playing Monopoly, will change him as a person? This evil piece of garbage targeted helpless elderly women, for God's sake. Oh, he's a schizo?... It doesn't change the fact that he beat and raped elderly women, murdering one and firing a shotgun between ones legs. Yes, a shotgun. That is by far the most brutal thing I can think of, had those pellets from that shell had shredded her crotch and ripped through her intestines. It's vile, it's disgusting and whether or not he intended to shoot her, that man can rot in prison, and not just prison; pound-me-in-the-ass prison. Pardon me, but that's just how I feel about it.

  3. In this article I can’t help but to see a reoccurring theme. People in this man’s family knew of his illness. Is there no way to have someone committed anymore? I think what even more disturbing here is the many times this man also had run-ins with the law and that still did not help protect society from his crimes. I do believe that people can have split personalities but I do not believe that should exclude you from punishment for the crimes you commit. At some point this man in his life he knew was not right and he chose not to get help instead he wanted to see the world. For that fact and including his previous crimes I do believe that he should be put away for the rest of his life and my reason for that is he did not care enough to secure help on his own before so what’s to say he will do that on his own. He does not need to be a part of society. Part of being a productive member of society is to care about the welfare of those around you not to do them harm

  4. Obviously, this David Mitchell character has several problems. It’s also evident that the previous correctional facilities he has served in are doing nothing to fix these problems. So it seems to me that there are only a few reasonable solutions for this individual. One is life in prison. This man obviously is not stable enough to be a functioning member of society. I’m pretty convinced he’s not even stable enough to be a functioning member of an inmate population. Putting this guy behind bars is a hazard even to criminals. If he were to be locked up, I’m certain it would have to be in maximum security. If this guy would break even his brother’s back, he would probably be quick to hurt anyone when his second personality came out. Another possibility is to give this guy the needle. I’m sure that there isn’t enough on him to do this, but how else can you control such a monster? The final solution would be to attempt to find this guy some help. Maybe he should be given a shot in the psychiatric ward. It sounds to me like his hometown wasn’t able to offer him much medical help, and maybe that’s what he needs. Either way David Mitchell is not safe. He has no business being free around society. If he can’t control his disease then someone, or someplace, has to control it for him. He is way too dangerous to be roaming the streets. Proper measures must be taken to lock this guy up for a long time, or this will just continue to happen.

  5. After reading the article it seems to me that correctional facilities aren't doing their jobs. There is no way that this guy could continuoulsy commit these crimes and only have served for one or two cases. The man clearly needs help and doesn't need to be free on the streets. His target for elderly women is just saddening, they clearly have no way to defend themselves or fight back. He needs serious help and needs to be put away in a home that he can be locked down and the elderly can feel safe. It is just rediculous that they continuously allow this man too be free and roam around. I have no doubts that if the right procedures were to have taken place they could have saved alot of horror for those victims that David attacked. I just find it so crazy that no one ever stepped in too try and help this guys case.

  6. David, Johnny, Johnny, David… I will stick with Mitchell, but whoever this guy is he should be put into a mental institution. He was diagnosed with split personality when he was 14 and his mother also has it. I think she should have put him on some type of medication after his first Johnny experience when he broke his brother’s back. You would think this mother would know what can happen and not want her child to hurt her other son or anyone else for that matter. In his hometown the family was basically forced out because of how scary Mitchell was and how much trouble he caused. What I do not understand is if he has previously gone to prison for rape and other sorts of crimes, why is he let back on to the streets just to do it again. If this was stopped sooner then he would be in jail for a much longer time or in some type of mental institution where he would be helped and supervised. Also the poor old ladies that he raped, ewww by the way, would not be so traumatized, shot at, or murdered. I agree with the other student that said he is not even safe to be around other inmates and should be locked away some place to get some help.

  7. Again, the system has failed our society!! He should have been treated at the age of 14, but that might have been asking too much of our CRJ system. His family was probably poor and denied the proper help they needed. After breaking his brother's back, he should have been admitted. Yet, it took a murder and several rapes for them to say " oh, this man is a danger to our society". I'm also still trying to understand how one only got 8 years for rape, the nephew actually witnessed it, and yet he was let go to society again. Those poor women were defenseless and Mitchell took advantage of that.

  8. I can see at least two problems. The first being how the family never payed attention to "johnny" when he made his debut appearence at age 14 and the second being how the town terrorized this family instead of helping them. The community should have tried to help the family instead of burning their houses, assaulting them and basically going on witch hunts whenever they were around. David family should have seeked medical or psychological help for david before "johnny" got any worser, but unfortunately 5 ,maybe even more, defensless elderly women had to suffer because of this lunatic.

  9. This men obviously should been treated at the age of 14, also we can see how the system failed him but also his mother which had the same disease as him and never was treated. If he really has a split personality disorder then he should been getting treatment a long time ago, but that's how our government fails right here. The family was probably poor and could not afford to send him to get help, i think that our government should do something really fast to push for national insurance for everybody except people that have a high income and could afford the money. That way the poor people could get help for free instead of letting the problem go away, because later in 20 years we have people like him out on the streets.

  10. This man from the beginning should have been locked up. He is a repeat offender and should be put on complete lock down. The fact that the system knows his record and keeps releasing him after repeat offences is just sickening. I honestly have no sympathy for him, I do not care if he has multiple personalities. If his other personality wasn't a rapist then it would be okay but he has been proven, multiple times, that he is a danger to society and cannot be trusted in the general population unless under close watch. I feel the only solution for these types of people would be to lock them away from everyone else because he is not stable. They could try medication, but in a well watched environment like a mental institution, but not with him having access to the general public. He is just too dangerous to everyone. He should have no chance to even leave the prison facility he is in, we can't take a risk when we KNOW it is going to happen again.

  11. This is unbelievable, after he broke his brothers back he should have been placed within a mental institution with someone watching him daily and helping him learn to control his other personality. If this would have been done it would have prevented numerous rapes, a murder, and multiple beatings of the elderly. It should have been a huge warning flag to law enforcement when a 14 year old boy with a dual personality is deranged enough to beat their own brother with a brick bad enough to break his back. I guess at the time this case wasn’t a high enough priority for over spread law enforcement officials to worry about. If only our CRJ system could get enough personnel and money to actually work and not have to overlook the low priority cases, because if that was the case our CRJ system could have prevented multiple rapes and a murder from happening. Those rapes and beatings not only hurt the victims physically but most likely left miserable psychological effects on those poor innocent elderly folk, which makes me sick to the stomach.

  12. This is something that people could go either way on, but I think the most rational thing would be not to put him in prison, but maybe a mental institution because he can not help that he has a serious mental disorder that has been the cause of what he's done. But i think his mental disorder is different from one that has anger problems that goes to prison. This guy is sick, but more so and with less or no control versus other prisoners that have their own issues. I think this man deserves to pay for what he did, but I dont think just throwing him to rot in prison would be fair, more unfair for him than for other prisoners. I think these cases shouldnt have been overlooked to begin with though, a lot of pain could have been spared if things were taken more seriously from the start.

  13. Regardless of any disabilities, I believe if you commit a crime, you have to serve the time associated with the crime. He should not be out, free, walking around freely. If his parents knew there'd be a chance of any of their children having split personalitites, they should've seeked help for all of them. He should not be allowed to get away with things like this. A regular prison probably won't be the right answer but medication and an institution should help out a little if not completely resolve the problem.

  14. I really do not care and believe in pleading insanity when it comes to situation like this. I can not believe he got away with so many crimes especially rap. When he hit his own brother acrossed the back with the brick should of been a conviction. Even though he has the split personality disorder, it is still the same person. I feel like he should be locked up for this cause this clearly shows that he is not getting help like he was suppose to.

  15. How is it that this guy was still on the streets after so many incidents? I understand he had a mental disorder, but that shouldn't mean that he should get away with anything. Especially since he committed several crimes. Despite his mental stability,he should have been locked up, at least in a mental institution. The article never mentioned any attempt of help or rehab for this guy. Just serving time in prison isn't going to change his mental disorder. The fact that he was put back into society and got away with a lot of those crimes is appalling. The crimes against those elderly women could have been prevented possibly and Mitchel should be charged accordingly.

  16. Well, After reading the article it seemed that the prison correctional facility should of ran numerous psychological evaluations, but this should of also of been done before going to trial. At the age of 14, it would seem that his mother or the schools would have noticed that something was not right and get him the help that he needed. With his split personality I feel that the courts failed in putting him or just plain over looked his problem by not putting him away permanently in a mental institution. It seems as if the system failed to put him away in the correct facility and failed to protect the public from him. His past record showed that he had been in prison before and his illness was one that was incurable. David Mitchell was allowed to walk the streets to brutally attacking, raping and beating his elderly victims. These women have been tortured and will live in horror after all his victims were put through. The Criminal Justice System has failed in protecting our society.

  17. This man should not have been let out of prison in the first place. He should have been put in a psych ward. His family should hold some type of blame. They knew that he had a mental condition but they did not do anything about it. So abandoned him and let him go run wild with out any type of medication. They knew he was a violent person. Just because he has a split personality that is not an excuse for raping elderly women. They need to put him back in jail where he belongs. He should go to a mental hospital where he can get the treatment he needs. And they should not let me out of jail EVER!

  18. This is just unbelievable that a man with this type of behavior could go so long committing crimes and causing problems and always seemed to get a slap in the hand. He should have been locked up as a young person and given a psychiatric evaluation. If they had given him help when he was younger I think a lot of his behavior could have been avoided. His issues were just ignored and later led him to do more serious crimes. I think he needs some serious psychological help. As a child he should have received adequate attention but since his mother had a split personality as well I’m assuming they felt it was not a big deal. He is the type of offender that should not be released and made sure he was admitted into a mental facility for life. Mitchell is a very dangerous man that does not belong with the rest of society. He is a perfect example of a repeated offender. The justice system should have never let him out with his record.

  19. First I don't understand why this guy went all this time in and out of jail without being made to take medicine for the crimes. And with that i don't understand why he was in and OUT of jail. Why he was let out knowing he had a problem with split personality. Jail is obviously not for the "insane", that is why we have a sentencing to where you go to a phsy ward. so you can get treated and not be released onto the streets to commit more crimes.

  20. As said in the end of the story, I do not understand why he still on the street. The split personality he has will never keep him out of trouble. I'm not sure if split personalities are heriditary but their mom had it also. Because he has this disorder, what happens isn't really his fault. This is really a sad case, but the law does need to contain him to minimize his contact with elderly women.

  21. 4) I don’t understand how this man was still able to be in normal civilization after his long track sheet. He obviously had rage and anger issues and openly hurt others. I don’t understand how he even made it to New York where he needed to be was in jail. I’m not sure how much I believe in this “split-personality”. It seems most of the time he is very angry and very dangerous. Even if he does have the split-personality though he should still be anywhere but on the streets where he can hurt even more people. It seems like the communication in this case was just off. After so many beatings and domestic disturbances surely he would have gotten a longer jail sentence or some type of treatment in facility. But no, he ended up back in the streets hurting more people. Also people knew of his illness where were they to help or let the judicial system know of this illness. I think after this many times of him hurting others and especially rape I have no sympathy for him but at the same time he is one that slipped through the cracks of the judicial system.

  22. I think the plea of insanity is one of the most BS excuesses a criminal and his attorneys could can think of! Most criminals use it to try and escape the death penalty, others hope for sympathy from judge when it comes to sentencing. Im not saying that the Central Park Rapist does not have Split personality disorder, but that even with this disorder he still knows right from wrong and he knows that raping another person is not okay. I think that if they are that mentally ill that when they do go to prison they should serve their time in solitary confinement.

  23. some people play the crazy role in order to justify the crazy things that they do. The key word here is "play". He was functioning ok every other time, it's just when he commits acts of violence is when he tries to bring up this other personality. I beleive this guy should be locked up for the rest of his life in a mental institution.

  24. “David is a quiet country boy who would do anything for his mama. Johnny is a sex-crazed fiend who brutalizes elderly women and once broke his brother’s back with a brick. They are the same man.” All I can say to that opening is Wow. I have never met anyone with a split personality disorder, and I cannot begin to even understand the concept. I believe if they knew about his disorder long before that then action should have been taken to take care of his disorder better since they knew he could be violent when “Johnny” comes out. I believe he needs to be put in a mental institution for the rest of his crimes based on his past and current charges. He clearly needs to be locked up and receive help. I just can’t believe after his history, he isn’t locked up. If I knew more about the disorder I could have a better agreement, but I cannot state if he actually has it or not or just says so to have a reason for his crime. He might be faking, but either way, he needs some help which could either be jail or the mental hospital.

  25. I really don’t understand why he is still out in the streets this is terrible!! He should be locked up in prison or in a mental intuition. There are no questions to be asked he is crazy he has done a lot of crimes and has not received the right punishment. By just the fact that he broke his brothers back shows that he does not have a heart, his mental problems took over him apparently since he was a little boy. His “split-personality’’ does not give him the right to rape, murder and beat elderly women and still get away without being put in jail. Knowing that by using the excuse of his “split-personality’’ he can get away with anything he can start hurting little girls. Little girls are innocent of everything some of them will not tell anyone they got abused sexually because they might feel embarrassed or might even think it was their fault. No woman should have to go to thru something like this in life. As a mom or as a daughter its disturbing knowing either your mom or daughter can be the next victim. After committing crime after crime I think he should be put in jail for the rest of his life.

  26. Oh my gosh this is just crazy. I would be so afraid of him. This is the laws fault because it seems to me that “Johnny” has had too many chances. Split personality or not…he shouldn’t be aloud to continue being on the streets. If the man has split personalities and cant control them then he needs to be locked up or placed in some type of mental facility…the man is mental. His mom also had split personalites, so I guess he had no way out. That is so disgusting I cant believe he keeps going after elderly women.. this man seriously needs to be locked up and kept locked up,I hate to say that but he has had way too many chances. People in his community should not have to fear for their lives just because of a man that has split personality, it isnt his fault that he was born like this its no ones fault but something still should be done about this. He would be better off in a mental facility and the community would be at ease. If this man is let out on the streets, he will start going after other victims, not just elderly women…but children also…anyone really. You never know what is goes through a slpit personality ersons head and what they are capable of doing next.

  27. This is a sad and unfortunate situation. It is obvious that his family knew of his mental state, also, why was released to be a part of society. Was he set up for failure? It did seem as if he was wanted dead by everyone in the town. I think this is so sad that our society passes judgment even on people in this state of mind. On the flip side that does not constitute that this man committed this treacherous crime which does not allow him to be off the hook. Although he had mental issues, I believe that e knew what was he doing while committing these crimes and for that, he does need to be punished to the fullest extent. If they lock him in a mental ward, then I believe that will only contribute to what did. This may seem cruel, but I am a true believer that everyone should be responsible for their own actions. Obviously this man had some type of sense, he knew that what he was doing was wrong and he proceeded with it anyway. He knew this because of his previous situation, so I have no sympathy for the type of punishment that he receives.
