"El Chapo" Guzman Captured Feb. 22nd 2014

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/23/world/americas/el-chapo-capture/index.html Some like to say that the current "War on Drugs and Cartels" is Mexico's issue. I tend to think that the United States helps fuel the Drug War fire and blood spills in both countries as a result. With the recent capture of "El Chapo" Guzman the current war is entering a new chapter. What do you think needs to happen with the Drug War which continues to plague the Criminal Justice system?

  1. As proud as I am of U.S. officials for catching Guzman, I feel like we have just scraped the surface of fixing the drug problem in America. There is probably already someone who has been trained to take the spot of Guzman and everyone just moves up in ranks. I feel like we can learn a lot from him and he should be interrogated and questioned to the fullest to get information about what it is like to be a drug lord. Inside information would help a lot and would be very valuable. I am happy that another name has been crossed off the list and this is a small victory in the giant battle between U.S. and our war on drugs.

  2. I feel like Guzman might still have power like he did in the past and nothing will change, but I do have hopes that the Mexican government is not as corrupt as it was (which I doubt) or they put officers that will not be corrupted by Guzman or the Cartel. If it is corrupt than there is no point in having him locked up because he will continue to expand and even might be able to get more people in the cartel that are in jail. If the United States does not at least help a little The drug cartel will keep expanding in Mexico to a point to where it can even take over some parts in the United States and much more drugs will be brought here because we didn’t want to help out, they are already in control in many parts of Mexico and they will only keep expanding. Much still has to be done in this Drug War and this might be just the beginning of a difficult battle. They should start by interrogating Guzman if he will give any information out and if he doesn’t torture him, it might seem harsh but he has killed many innocent people and him a bit injured is not that bad to what he had done too many. Also whoever takes his place next should be locked up and questioned and so on, the government should try to scare people out of being in the cartel somehow.

That shoe that you can run but you can’t hide, dealing with drugs you will stay on the run from the law. It’s just not (Mexico’s) issue because somehow drugs are still getting here in the U.S. There might well be some corrupt in the Mexican government, how can he go so long and they not know his were about.
How did he get those drugs out to other state, he had to have help.( Public Enemy Number One ) he didn’t act along .they use tunnels to elude police. He should be interrogated and find out who he is working with.

  4. I find it interesting that there was no violence involved in his arrest. I feel like it would've been a war between his men and the police. It wouldn't surprise me if El Chapo Guzman could convince many people in jail and begin to expand his army. He is a very powerful man and he could even turn the police. The Mexican government is so corrupt that it is very likely for Guzman to manipulate them into doing what he wants. There were so many people that were hurt by Guzman but I am sure that more will continue to suffer. There has to be a plan that he came up with for the others to use while he is locked up because he had to be prepared just in case this moment arrived. There has to be a back up person or people that are in charge while he is out. There are many sources out there that say that the man they captured was not actually Guzman. And of course this affects not only Mexico but the US as well.

  5. Joaquin Guzman, finally brought to justice. This successful capture was due to the great cohesion of Mexican and American Government officials; which entailed: Mexican Marines, U.S. Border Patrol, D.E.A., and U.S. Marshals. Their comprehensive Intel through means of wire taps, interrogations, and roomers resulted in this victorious capture. I think this is a step in the right direction; With Mexico being our nation’s next door neighbor, we must learn how to unite for the better cause. This is a clear message to all present and future inspiring crime bosses; now two nations will exhaust their resources in capturing heavy hitters. Even though Mexico has much corruption in its government, which most likely enabled Guzman to be a fugitive for multiple years, every nation needs a starting point in order for positive change to evolve.

  6. Guzman's arrest is a huge blow to drug trafficking. We're talking about the most powerful and influential guy in this business and also one of the most powerful guys in the world. The question is, what effect will this have on violence and drug trafficking, especially in mexico. Taking out the leader of the cartel might've seen like a way to destroy this cartel, but just how the Al Qaeda chose a replacement for Bin Laden, so will el Chapo be replaced. What i fear is that this may have only made matters worse, and the cartel(s) will behave in even greater ruthlessness in order to show that they can't be stopped. Yes this was a blow against drug trafficking, but it's going to take much more to end this global problem.

  7. With the resent arrest of El Chapo this will put a big hit on the drug lords in Mexico. But they cold replace him with somebody else that is just a level under him so that the production of drugs will not stop but keep going. If the officers that arrest El Chapo can get him to talk and tell them things about the drug lords than that will help them out with trying to stop the drugs lords. This is a huge capture that will hopefully help the drug trafficking problem in Mexico

  8. The arrest of Guzman is a huge win for the U.S. but for how long? Guzman is considered public enemy number one and rightfully so. This guy had his hand in every cartel in Mexico and was seen as more powerful than the Mexican president himself. Although this may halt things dramatically in the short-term you have to wonder how long it will last. With the capture of El Chapo I am sure there is somebody ready to take charge of his huge empire that spanned continents. El Chapo has to be smart or else he wouldn't be where he is today or have escaped prison so it would not surprise me if he handpicked his next guy in charge already. We shall see.

  9. So the US caught the most wanted drug Lord.... ok...
Well he isn't the only one out there. Drug cartel will ALWAYS be a problem i think. There is just too much to control

  10. This is a major success for the U.S. and hopefully this man will not be able to beat our system again? For someone to be able to get out of so much he sure has done a lot and its good that there is one less drug lord invading Mexico as well as us in the U.S.. Like someone said above Im sure that there is someone ready and trained to take control over Guzmans "job". Its really sad that he has children that he is also putting through this also but there will always be drug problems yes, but we cant just sit around and say that they are "to much to control" and let them carry on. This one in particular is a very big deal and our system im sure is already on to stopping the next. Trafficking will probably never be stopped but it can be slowed down and left with people being scared. Another outcome if we were to just leave it alone because its "to much", is that people would start to not hide and be very clear and outspoken about what they are doing.

  11. This is making us one step closer to being a drug free world. We need to buckle down as a world and start fighting back, we need to bring down everyone involved with drugs. Drugs rule this world so far so we need to take it back. We can't have ourselves a little party we need to go back out there and start bringing more in. There needs to be no easy punishment, and their own prison so they can't involve the outside world. If we legalize any drugs then were just giving drugs more power, and showing that we are weak and looking for an easy way out.

  12. This is a very successful capture due to the fact that chapo guzman has been one of the most wanted criminals around the world. It can be seen as a very huge accomplishment for the Mexican and U.S. government. The capture of Joaquin Guzman wont have a change though in terms of gun and drug trafficking. In the country of mexico, the capture of this man will most likely result in a very violent and bloody effect. others cartels that are in the country of mexico may see el chapo's Sinaloa cartel a lil weaker due to the fact that he's captured and they might want to start wars in gaining control over territories. Having el chapo guzman in prison wont effect his business due to the fact that he may control in from inside the prison, or leave the job to his right hand man which is El Mayo Zambada which has been in this business with him together for many years. In order for there to be a positive successful change, there has to be a completely end to the corruption in the Mexican government. The U.S. will also have to do more in securing the seas and borders in order for the trafficking to end. we will also have to take down the head buyers that are hear in the U.S. and interrogate to capture more people that are involved.

  13. I think what is most interesting about the raid that finally captured El Chopo was that it was coordinated and successfully executed by the Mexican marines. What I have learned about the government of Mexico has not been favorable from overlooking the whereabouts of notorious criminals, to allow the blatant disregard for tourist concerning kidnappings. This raid was calculated using technological advances in the military such as heat sensing cameras and the element of surprise. The crimes that have been perpetrated by this man are endless from murder to kidnapping to various drug offences he has continually evaded capture by the assistance of those around him. This story is a perfect example of what we discuss in gangsters regarding the community around the criminal. The people around him become so dependent off of the illegal activities of the gangster whether it is for money or drugs or even because of fear no one exposes the criminal this is exactly how this man evaded capture so long. However now that he has been caught I have read several articles talking about how he has various people to carry on his illegal activities for him.

  14. I am glad that the U.S. and Mexican government actually worked together on achieving this goal of capturing this man. He did slip up on keeping his guard up and that was his downfall…..along with his so called guards…..which were also probably “napping” on the job. The only problem with this is that his second in command or whoever has the balls to step up to the plate, will do so, Let’s just hope that they weren’t taking notes on how successful Guzman was and that they actually run the cartel into the ground……..never mind, what am I saying, someone will just kill him and take over, silly me lol! So in short this is just another short lived victory for the U.S. and Mexican Government on the war on drugs, and just a temporary setback for the cartels…..everything will return to normal within a few months.

  15. After 13 years of his escape from prison in Mexico, El Chapo Guzman is finally captured again. The capture of El Chapo really shows what U.S. and Mexican government officials can do when when they work together. The wiretaps and interrogations were great ways to help capture him. I never thought rumors would actually help, I would have thought people would be too afraid to even mention his name in public. I also heard a U.S drone was used to track El Chapo. When I heard of El Chapo’s capturing I was at the Flea Market in Grand Prairie and what really surprised me is that many people were happy to hear of El Chapo’s capture but many were also disappointed. Many did believe he El Chapo was a ruthless evil man but others seen him as a great generous man who took from the rich and gave to the poor. At one point El Chapo was actually willing to help the Mexican government stop the violence but he was denied. Even though El Chapo is back in prison, the war on drugs is far from over. I’m pretty sure someone has already stepped up in El Chapo place, perhaps someone more dangerous. I believe that as long the U.S. and Mexico work together many things can be accomplished to help in the war against drugs and violence. Lets just hope El Chapo is in a more secured prison to prevent him from escaping again.

  16. Yes, it is a big deal that they caught “El Chapo” Guzman, but he will most likely escape again somehow, just like he did the last time they locked him up. Also while he is locked up they probably have a replacement for him that keeps the cartel running like he never even left. They should interrogate Guzman and see if he will reveal anything about the cartel or where they are growing all of the drugs, or how they are getting them across the border. I also thought it was crazy that Guzman was ranker number 41 on the most powerful people in the world, and the Mexico president wasn’t even on the list.

  17. “El chapo” Guzman captured will have both good results and bad results. The bad results are going to happen in Mexico with no doubt due to the many different cartels that are going to try to gain control over different territories. The violence in Mexico is going to increase tremendously and the drug trafficking will more than likely continue to be the same. It is possible that “El Chapo” will continue to have control over the drug trafficking around the world due to all the power he was able to gain over the past years. It is obvious that someone else already took over “El Chapos” position, and that person could be one of “El chapos” closest friend. I am sure that whoever took his position is going to try and get rid of “El Chapo” in order to get some type of recognition. Hopefully, the authorities get good information from “ El Chapo” that may help them capture other dangerous fugitives. I really hope the violence in Mexico does not increase because it will be sad to have more deaths in Mexico due to drug trafficking.

  18. So do you really think that things are going to change because of the capture of this lone man???? I hardly think so; it’s good that El Chapo Guzman was finally captured, thirteen years was a long time to evade authorities. Now I feel that he had some deep connections with the government officials in Mexico and this is how he was able to escape from prison and stay in hiding for so long, maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong either way the other cartels will continue to fight for power and the war on drugs will continue; some other want to be drug lord will step up to the plate and take over.

  19. Thinking about the drug problem the world has I feel that the capture of "El Chapo" really isn't a big deal. Although he is imprisoned, a new leader will take his place and possibly a new gang has gained momentum in territory for drugs. The problem is not "El Chapo". The problem is his customers which is the American people. If people stopped doing drugs, the drug lords would have no profit and no business in America. No matter how many heads we cut off the snake, if we keep feeding the snake we won't have to worry about trying to kill it. Solve the problem not stop it.

  20. El Chapo being arrested looks like it could have been a great success to many people. In my opinion it seemed so fake or staged. I found it hard to believe that he would allow himself to get caught after he knew that they had been following and monitoring him closely. I feel that his capture was possibly a way for him to retire and let the knew cartel leader take over. I just can't imagine him almost giving himself up without a fight or violence. I feel El Chapo Guzman like many other powerful "gangsters" made a deal with the government and will "escape". The

  21. As I had said in another blog I was shocked to hear about this news. I still believe it was very suspicious. It was very weird that there was absolutely no fighting between Guzman’s army and the police. I would have thought that a man with as many agencies and powerful countries looking for him that he would go down fighting and not the way he did. Now all we have to do is wait to see who will take his place as the drug lord until he can get out from prison. I just hope the next person who takes his place is not worse than Guzman. But over all a great success for both Mexican and Unites States government. Hope they can get him prosecuted.

  22. I do not understand how "El Chapo" would be "allowed" to be in hiding so long with still being in public, on top of that pretty much holding people from free will during their meals. This make no sense! If he was able to use the cities tunnels to travel from one house to another, why did they not just follow him, catch him and prosecute for evading arrest? Although, that is the least of the problems, it would not have took them so long to catch him. This issue is what bothered me the most. His security vs. Marines?

  23. I was so excited to hear about Guzman being captured. This was such a big step toward getting the drug wars undercontrol. Even though we have a long way to go and a lot of other people to aprehend this was a great beginning. I loved the way they were able to keep him under survelience and sneek in and get him while he was sleeping without any casualties. With his capture this sends out a big message to other individuals on the worlds most wanted list that it might not be today or even very soon but you will get caught and tried for your crimes. I know that this has caused quite a stir and a premature celebration within the world but we need to slow down and take into account this will not be easy and we need to stay on task and keep our focus on our goals. As long as we keep our sights set on doing the job in the most affective way we will prevail. Congrats to all the people that were involved in the capture of this drug lord. Keep your sights on victory.

  24. Capturing El Chapo Guzman was a great victory for the drug cartel however I feel like he still has the power to do whatever he wants while in Mexico. Mexican government is so corrupt that its own people don’t trust them. I believe this individual should be extradited to the United States where justice can serve its purpose. What’s also interesting about this arrest is that no violence was used no guns, no men helping him escape. It seems as if it was all planned out to get the capture in the Mexican government and him to declare one victory. However I don’t doubt if he already has a plan escape planned out in a couple of months. Bringing justice to the world is not cleary defined until his out of Mexico and in us soil. It was a clear capture by the Mexican Marines, U.S Border Patrol, D.E.A, and U.S. Marshalls. My applauds go to them.

  25. The capture of El Chapo Guzman may be a victory for Mexico and the war on drugs, but his capture does not mean the drug cartel is disbanded. They already have a suspected heir "El Mayo" and many more active members of the cartel that are still out there and running things and El Chapo may even be able to run things from prison. Also, the war on drugs is definitely not just Mexico's problem. There is a large market in the United States, and other countries, that fuels the Mexican drug wars.

  26. In watching this story on how Guzman was captured you think to yourself “ why didn’t they use this procedure before and capture him a long time ago.” What is interesting to me is at the end of the video how they talked about how when Guzman would go eat at a restaurant, no one was allowed to leave and their cell phones would get confiscated in fear someone would turn him in. However, when he was finished eating he would pay for everyone’s meal, return everyone’s cell phone and tell everyone good-bye. It is an example of how the community supported this man and why he was able to hide for so long. What interests me is the similarity of the community support with other gangs we have discussed all over the world. Some people just want a purpose to be a part of. Even though this mans sole purpose of income was illegal activity, he found a way to get parts of his community to like him and obviously believe in what he was doing, otherwise people would have been calling authorities as soon as he left the restaurant and received their cell phones back. I’m sure he did not have complete support, but it was enough to keep him rogue. I feel sorry for his children. Kids do not have a say or any control in what their parents do for a living, they are born into it. Hopefully his kids learned that illegal activity may pay well, eventually you can get caught in the long run.

  27. This is a good capture for the Mexican government, it will go a long way in the war against drugs. Sure other members of these cartels might want to step forward and become the new leader but it wont be without a price. As long as their is money involved and somebody can make a profit somebody will step up but they have seen what happened to the famous "El Chapo" so without a doubt they will be hesitant to continue these operations. As to the United States and Mexico working together to nab this famous cartel leader i feel as if no doubt it is a win for both sides. Mexico gets rid of the iconic Cartel leader that has been tainting the name of mexico for many years, and the United States will not completely stop drug smuggling into the States but it will more than likely stop some of the smugglers. This was a vital Stepping stone to stopping the drug war.

  28. Like they said in the video, it was a good strategy used by Mexican and U.S. law enforcement and also it was neat how they used infrared technology to see that his body guards were asleep so they could move in and capture him. He had been on the run long enough and he did well at staying away from authorities but also like they said at the end, he got sloppy. They had the upper hand by using the element of surprise and obviously it worked. I believe this capture will send a message out as far as the war on drugs. Since he is now captured, there is no doubt that someone will step up and fill in his position as a drug lord and continue doing what "El Chapo" had been doing, which will cause a continuation in the controversy involving drug wars. It just will never end.

  29. This is great that we are able to work with the Mexican government to get a drug kingpin off the street. this is telling me that the government is less corrupt as it once was. but he is just one man. this could be bad for mexico since if he is convicted that would leave a power vacuum that will cause even more blood in the streets. it is going to be a interesting development if weed is legalized in the united states . because that will take out the money from that business. the theory that would apply would be control theory with the fight over few resourceful.

  30. The issue with the drug cartel is one that must be faced in tandem by the U.S. government and the Mexican government. It does not surprise me this took longer to arrest him. The fact that El Chapo had been arrested and attained shortly, but quickly walked due to a briefcase full of $50,000 in cash says a lot. There is a likely possibility of corruption in the law enforcement of Mexico with high poverty a prominent problem for many individuals. It's awesome to see though, the use of technology to capture someone, which I believe lowered the risk significantly for those in pursuit. What amazes me is the utilization of these “secret tunnels” connected to the seven houses. The amount of money to probably execute such a project was more than likely a costly endeavor, but it shows the extent and lengths these cartel leaders are taking for their security. As soon as it was noticed, Guzman’s arrest, I’m pretty confident another individual has been assigned or taken the reigns of his portion of control and authority over the cartel. This is good work by the government forces, but it will soon continue where it just left off.

  31. El Chapo, was the leader of the drug cartel. He was captured from Mexico; he also escaped from Mexico prison in 2001. This guy is on the level of Pablo Escobar and he also controlled an army of nearly three hundred billion dollars a year. He’s also allegedly trafficked for over 100k tons of cocaine in the United States. It also states that the drug operation was active in four other continents. He is also label in criminal indictment in eight plus the U.S and cities. It also states that he’s been on the run for the last thirteen years, and they been trying to captured him. They even tried wiretapping into the phones, and GPS tracking etc. the United States, even offered up to 5, million for any kind of information leading to his arrest. They said he was found in a small apartment and that he didn’t even put up a fight, against his arrest.

  32. Catching El Chapo Guzman is great, but i don't think this end just yet. With a man like him with his power, there's absolutely no way that the cartel will just be quiet about it.
