We visited the Mungiki gang in international gangsters this semester, and I must say after reading the articles and watching the video about the Mungiki gang, it is still unclear if this group of people could actually be classified as a gang. In the readings we had in class most of the articles were written by the Kenyan government and some of it seemed a little fictitious. We also watched a video and throughout the video is seemed like most of the people that lived in the areas of Kenya were the Mungiki gang resided looked at them as saviors. They stated before the Mungiki arrived there was violence, drug dealing, robbing etc. and all of it disappeared when the Mungiki showed up to help the community. The only thing that I don’t agree with and it wasn’t very clear was the female genital mutilation. I don’t think women should be forced into genital mutilation, now if this is something they choose; it would be a different story. But, I can’t see any woman wanting to be mutilated.
