Interesting news story on the global reach of the Shower Posse. Why not comment....:)

  1. There's so much going on with the Jamaican Shower Posse, in general the welfare of the Jamaican society. The seeds of corruption beginning with the political party-gang collaboration initiated what has become a culture of control using violence and crimes as their tools. Apparently the politicians and elected officials have no backbone or good ethical standards since they condone and to an extent promote the terrorizing of local voters for the sake of winning an election. Killer campaign scheme! I do however think that by pursuing and arresting Christopher Coke, who is the Jamaican Shower Posse gang leader, the crime rate of this gang internationally has declined. If you want to take out a gang, nip the leader in the butt. I’m also more curious about the C.I.A.’s contribution to the crimes taking place in Jamaica. What do you do when the law makers and enforcers are corrupt and tainted by greed and merciless violence? I can’t imagine what life would be like in America if the democrats and republicans hired henchmen to shoot citizens if they refuse to vote for them. Our government protects us from worries like that and since Jamaica doesn’t have a government it explains a lot.

  2. CORRECTION. Jamaica has a parliamentary government run by people who get together to find solutions for problems which in contrast to democracy is almost night and day. Although crime is prevalent in both types of societies, their is less crime in America and more rights and freedoms where in Jamaica their is more crime with less individual liberties.

  3. In comparison to the U.S., the Jamaican Posse has more control over its community and more influence in the government. This causes the gang to be much more harder to eradicate from Jamaica. Like the reconstruction era in the U.S., the Tivoli Gardens will be hard to reform because not only was the Jamaican Posse a type of government for that community, but also a resource for survival.

Even though coke was arrested, that doesn’t always mean the end of a gang. There are many others willing to fill in the position of leader. The gang is temporarily at a stand still; however, what about the “bases” the gang has in the U.S. and Canada? I think that if the connect between the two bases were to be disconnected then the Jamaican Posse will take a major hit. Why? Because gangs are formed to make a profit and if drugs cannot be set to the U.S. to sell then profit is lost.

  5. It’s hard to stop the web of drug and gun traffickers. The Canadian police feel they have done a good job arresting who they have identified as Shower Posse gang members, although no one arrested has admitted belonging to this gang. Unfortunately the attraction to this line of work is extremely attractive to the poor, uneducated, and hungry. For every person taken off the streets there are several waiting to take their place. The basic needs of the Jamaican people need to be met first. Throwing time and money catching and housing these criminals is not the fix needed. If you buy a hungry man a meal that solves the problem on the short term. If you teach a man to fish and grow crops you have given him skills to last a lifetime. A social structure of self-sufficient people will not have to rely on the Don to make sure they have what they need. They could do for themselves and raise the standard of living for their people. This undertaking would be no small feat, it would be teaching a new way of life through educating the entire community with small changes.

  6. I think it is ironic that the gangs were originally formed for political reasons and now they are causing Jamaica problems. The politicians that decided that this would be a good idea are surely paying the price now. The Shower Posse has become more powerful than the politicians and are more respected or feared then the actual government. The citizens of Jamaica where willing to give up their lives in order to protect Christopher "Dudus" Coke who was one of the leaders of the Shower Posse. One big problem that Jamaica has is corruption. Many of the politicians and government officials have no morals or are more interested in their own wants and needs that they are willing to put in jeopardy everyone else. It is not rare to see a politician and a member of a gang walking hand in hand in Jamaica. Corruption is not the only thing that is keeping the Shower Posse alive it’s also the people who are hungry and despite to survive. The Jamaican police can arrest members of the Shower Posse but because of the poverty of Jamaica there is going to be someone willing to take their place in the gang.

  7. I think its sad when a country depends on gang activites in order to stay afloat. The Jamaican Posse has such a strong hold on the citizens and government officials of Jamaica that everyone choses to look the other way while crime and death is constantly surrounding them. I think its sad when someone has to depend on Gang leaders in order to make sure they have a roof over their head at night. I think that if the government would realize that there is a problem going on right in front of them and step up and put into place strict policies on craking down on gangs then the death toll they experience will go down dramatically. I also think that Government officials are suppose to be the leaders of the country so what needs to happen is they need to get a strong willed person in there that can clean the place up.

  8. This article shows the power that the shower posse has, even though its leader Dudus Coke has been captured and has been extradited to the United States. It also shows how well organized the gang is to have set up shop in the United States and in Canada. It seems as they are working as a franchise. What I thought that was very interesting was the leniency statement that Dudus Coke wrote to the judge on all the good things he has done for the people in is community. Even though he was the leader of a notorious gang that ran an enterprise of drugs and arms dealing, he has done a lot for his community. It seems that Coke has done a lot more that the Jamaican government has ever done for their own people, which I understand why the people from Tivoli Gardens would risk their life to protect him.

  9. Although this article is sad, it is also a little disturbing. It is funny how the Jamaican government worked with the Shower Posse in the beginning, and now they are their biggest enemy. This shows how well organized the posse was, that they were operating in Canada and the United States. It is very disappointing that the United States had to step in a go after Dudus Coke to put an end to the killing, drug trafficking, and weapons trafficking, before Jamaica’s own government. I also find it disturbing that such a ruthless person was looked upon as a “God”, to the Jamaican citizens, because what he has done for them, and that it did not matter how many innocent lives were lost in the fight to apprehend Dudus Coke. It is sad that one man has done more for the people of Jamaica, that its own government.

  10. This is probably one of my favorite gangs that we went over in class. the fact that one man Dudus Coke had so much power really shocks me, but the people loving him the way they did is crazy to me. I guess i didnt realize what all he did for the people of Tivoli, if i were in the same situation i probably would protect a man like that that did more for me than the government. another part of this article that i found interesting that i didnt know before is how the posse had people up in canada. i remember hearing that some of the shower posse were in north america but i didnt know it was that far north.
