  1. The names of these groups are very colorful but are meant represent the specialties of the gang. If the Cape Flats were a medieval country, the gangs would represent the different “families” of that country. Each would have control over a piece of land and be known for their products or specialties. For example, The Total Pipe Killers might be known for their marijuana products and have a weed plant as their symbol. Currently, the gangs are behaving as if they were still in the medieval times fighting for territory. People fear death and gangs use murder to gain respect, honor and power. Gang control is difficult because of increasing number of member and the easiness to create a gang.

In broadcasting, newspapers and Internet most gang members mentioned are male. The article mentions rape as an initiation ritual. This made me consider the role women play in gangs. If rape is about power, then possibly that can explain why rape is one of many initiation rituals? What about women who want to join or create gangs? What are their initiation rituals? In gangs it seems that gender stereotypes are more predominate than in regular society.

  2. In this article we can see how it does not matter in what part of the world gangs are they are pretty much formed for the same reasons. The way they organized themselves might differentiate a little but not too much. In the article it is mentioned that the number of gangsters is underestimated. This is probably true since the article also mentions that only 20 percent of the people from the Flats have jobs. We are a society that is taught to survive any way that you can and the people from the Flats found a way to survive and that is by becoming gangsters. Stopping gangs is a difficult task and I do not think that it will go away any time soon. One way to try to combat the forming of gangs is give the people from the Flats hope of living without having to be part of a gang to survive and educating them so they can get out of the Flats. It hard for an outsider to come into the Flats and try to help the people out since the gangster have control over it and they will protect their territory. The gang world is controlled by violence and anyone that comes in trying to disarm them will be facing it.

    1. Sandra,
Your statement, "We are a society that is taught to survive any way that [we] can..." is applicable to situations in which the existence of life is on the brink of collapse. However, these people aren't trying to merely survive; they have chosen this path as their way of life. I agree with your thought on giving the gangsters "hope", but I also feel that this would be an almost impossible task. As great of an assertion that this is, I'm not sure how anyone would be able to give hope to a person who chooses to live this life; this is all they know. Food-for-thought.

    2. I agree with both of your standpoints to a certain extent. Sandra i do believe that when you are going through life attempting to live without basic human needs or subsistence, then it is easy for a person to find themselves in a state of "survival mode" doing anything neccessary to ensure their survival as well as family and others joined together. These individuals are at-risk and vulnerable to gang involvement and adopting that life-style over the one they current occupy. A perfect example that i always use is the Hurricane Katrina and Haiti Earthquake lootings that took place in the aftermath of those catastrophic events that left those specific societies in turmoil. Sometimes for certain individuals, life presented to them can already be filled with turmoil due factors such as low socio-economic status, unemployment, poverty, lack of education, ethnic or minority labels, stereotypes, racism, broken homes and so on. Not that I condone gang involvement or reasons for gang banging, but just trying to be cognizant of some elements that a gang member may be faced with. I shall be an optimist in stating that there is hope for the revival of the gang culture but it starts with the youth of today before they are snared into hyped traps of the romanticized "gansta lifestyle." It’s a [mindset] that has everything to do with education. If you don't know better you will not do better. If the word college was never introduced within a household, will the expectation for higher education be present? If people never tell these children that they have options in life to be whomever they aspire to be as long as they put half the effort they do while gang banging into learning and being productive, then I believe things will change. We don't have to allow our youth to be sucked in by the traps that rappers and actors make to make revenue. No person is perfect and a child at that makes childish mistake because they are not fully capable of rationalizing and reasoning situations out that adults are. I believe we must help to shape, built, and mold the mental framework of the at-risk youths and uproot the thoughts of negativity and violence that they so heavily ponder upon. The older they get, harder it is to reach out. Think about it… Before it becomes an action, it’s a thought. Change the thought process, change the action. TRANSFORMATION. I can provide a witness that I have experienced a change in my life that started with me changing my mind. With help of course, I realized that it’s the thoughts of a person that direct what a person does. Not the external social, political, environmental factors, the mind! However the mind is affected by whatever it is exposed to. Like stated above, the gang violence has become merciless to killings in someone’s home. Gangs and their violence is viral and they both spread like a wildfire. To consider stopping this, we have to get the children. It takes a village to raise a child and we all must contribute to make the world a safer harmonious place, even if you believe that that particular place only exists in Heaven… #For this we must strive.

  3. Wesleyan2012,
I agree with you to a point, when you say "I'm not sure how anyone would be able to give hope to a person who chooses to live this life." While many of them do chose this life its more motivated by the fact that they don't have money for food and they don't have clothes on their backs, so they see gang life as a quick way to get money to get these things and in that since I believe that if there were jobs available that were not influenced by the different gangs then many of these people would chose to take that road instead of going around and killing, but the reality of the situation is that there are no jobs available and around every corner there is gang wars and people are being killed right in front of their homes. And with all these new gangs forming the violence I can only see getting worse..

    1. So according to your response, money and jobs are two things that will help eradicate this problem? The past couple of years the whole world was hit with a major crisis- no jobs and no money. In the United States we saw the government try to prevent the inevitable from happening by giving out free money (although we all know nothing is ever free); this too, did nothing to prevent a crashing market from hitting rock bottom. Yet on the same hand, if one assumes that the only way to prevent crime and provide hope to a fallen people is to give them money, then we should have seen a big spike in crime all over the world.
Once again, according to you, the only way to give hope is through money. If this is the case, less than 2% of the people in this word have hope, and the other 98% of us are living a hopeless life.

  4. I love the names of these gangs, however they are very misleading. When I first heard of the names, it was hard for me to consider these gangs as being violent until I heard of the horrific acts they have committed. After reading this article along with those read in class, I could see how the gangs in the Cape area are so prevalent, what other choice do they have? Only 20% of the people here have legitimate jobs, that leaves 80% to try and find other ways to provide food and shelter for their families. These gangs have picked the perfect recruiting grounds, because most people see the lifestyles of these gangsters, and will do anything to join. Although the gangs commit heinous crimes, they do provide the people of their area with food, which is more than the government provides. I did find it interesting that the article makes reference to female gang members, which has not yet been discussed during class. I am sure most women do not live the life of a gangster instead like the article references; the women are used merely as puppets in the gangs.

  5. It is truly sad to see the state of gangs being so violent and rampant especially after all the sacrifices made by Mandela to end apartheid in South Africa in 1994. During the course of his presidency, a wide range of progressive social reforms were enacted by Mandela's government, aimed at reducing long entrenched social and economic inequalities in South Africa. This was widely seen as a major step in the reconciliation of white and black South Africans and to bring democracy. Mandela was imprisoned in Pollsmoor prison, so he knows how bad things can be there. Could the average gang members be around 18-25 years now and have just taken things into their own hands because they see no hope in ever getting out of the circle of doom. They are probably a lot of “aged” gang members that have set the path for the younger generation because they do not see any future and the government is probably afraid of them.

  6. its so stupid how people get in to gangs just to show people they are in something and we have to be afraid of them but, I think that this is so stupid cuz no gang makes you tuff what makes u tuff is how hard u work and how good you do so people respect you in a good way. I think that people who get in gangs are cowards that they can't do nothing by them self they need help to go and beat someone up or kill someone in groups that to me is someone coward if u have something to tell them why just go up there and bead them up by your self.

    1. Many gangs are formed for many different reasons. Some are formed from political issues, some are formed for equality issues, and some are formed because they want to feel like they belong to something but whatever the reason I think most gangs form because of economic issues. Most of these gangs are formed because the areas these gangs live in are poor and rundown. They can’t find any jobs and so they feel like they must do whatever they can to make ends meet. They engage in violent acts because they feel like this is the only way they can get the attention of the government to make changes. Wherever you go there will always be a gang and gangs will always be around. Unless they people who form gangs feel like their needs have been met then I don’t think gangs are going anywhere for a long time.

  7. Sounds to me like it’s more economical to be in one of these gangs if one was found to be living in that type of world. There are so many gangs it sounds like it would not be hard to find a representative of such and form a bond with. However, the part that excludes me is the killing nonsense. That’s where most of my confusion is, why the pointless killing? But, first we should update the numbers of gang population and assess the damage from that point. 80,000 is probably a drop in a bucket compared to the numbers of gangs that are actually out there today. Granted, you could get a sociologist or statistician in there and out safely. The volatility of the nature of these gangs makes it a challenge to observe and study. I personally just wish the poverty didn’t put them into such a hateful state. Peace is what is needed in that region, as well as many other locations around the world.

  8. The significance of the mayhem is the name of these gangs, what they are doing to be known for it, and how they continuously cause harm and danger being a threat to the every day society. The names of these gang alliances and sub-groups are what lead them to increase the high numbers of membership and crimes happening on a daily basis. The Total Pipe killers known for the different styles and ways to smoke marijuana and mandrax through the broken necks of bottles, Forever British and the JFK’s known for killing (weapons are a big concern in London right now with the Trident attempts), the Terrible gang killing innocent people, and The Firm, an organized crime group formed into super-syndicates that are more powerful than the police. It’s all a matter of defining their names and only causing crime that will become a signature to their names. Just like all other readings we can see the reasons for the means of forming gangs and its involvement, that part we get. The hard part is finding a strategy that will get these kids off the streets and away from becoming the future leaders of these gangs. Maybe legalizing products and allowing a less amount of money being made to eliminate some of these activities from happening. Just a crazy thought, yikesss!! In a study that was done 15yrs ago that reported the Flats to have 80,000 gangsters and currently underestimating that number to not have tripled or more throughout these years, would have had decreasing numbers if only it was stopped before it could happen. How? Instead of writing and reading about them, actually doing something about it and increasing that 20% of those that have jobs to double if not triple. If gaining respect is through killing the innocent, and having no one to gain that respect from, wouldn’t that lessen the number of growing gangs? Something that is NOT there can’t grow right?! We can’t be outnumbered by these gangs and show fear to them to back down like the Pagad. When gangs push, we have to push back. It’s sad to say, it’s easier said than done, but with the growing number of law officials and graduates in the criminal justice field that go out there and make a difference it will lessen the number of involvement from increasing 15 more years from now.

  9. This article was very interesting, because the different variety of names of the gangs that exists in the Cape Flats. Although their names may be portrayed as funny or weird, they are still very violent. What is very shocking is the percentage rate for legitimate employment in this area, and no wonder why so many gangs exist. Instead of the government researching, or not researching on how many gangs exist, they should try and find a way to improve the economic conditions in the area. The main question that remains the same with trying to figure out why gangs exists, one main variable that keeps slapping us in the face is the poverty issue. If the government starts working on the poverty issue, the gang problem might improve.

  10. The names are funny. It is funny what kids come up with these days. With gang names like The Junkie Funky Kids, The Naughty Boys and the Hard Livings it is hard to take them serious. But after you keep reading it shows that it doesn't matter what there gang name is, they will still kill like any other gang will. For instance, the total pipe killers. In the article it says they created the name from movies and they find as many ways as they can to smoke marijuana. It is kind of ridiculous of how many gangs are being created over there. With there being so many gangs, it might be hard for the police to figure out who did what. Also, it just seems like it is a way of life over there. If you don't like the gangs around you or don't want to go through initiation, you just get your friends and create a new gang.

  11. Like people have said before the strange and funny names these gangs create doesnt mean they are not violent. These gangs are every bit as nasty as any other violent gang. they live
"No excuses, no explanations, no apologies, not to anyone, not ever'.'
that to me says they dont really care what they do to other people as long as they have respect of their gang and the gang can defend them from others, they will continue to kill and make a bigger name for themselves and the gang. The people on the flatts have made efforts to stop the gangs, but each has failed so far, i just dont see and end to this area and gang infestation.

  12. I really enjoyed this article because every one of the gangs names made me laugh. Still though, that doesn't distract from the fact that these gangs are still ruthless and will do whatever it takes to become powerful. So just because they made me laugh I'm sure they can just easily make me hurt. One thing that was interesting that the article mentioned was that the community forms there on groups to fight the gangs and end up becoming gangs themselves. So its just one continuous cycle that will never end.

  13. What i was curious is more then anything is where do they come up with these names? But no matter how scary or funny the name sounds doesn't change the fact they are violent and aggressive. The mentality for gangs does not change, they are ruthless and are willing to kill or carry out whatever duty to get their point across. Respect is what they are all looking for, and defending one another is what they do to whatever extent.

  15. The world of the Cape Flats has been turned upside down. Gangs rule and the police are afraid to enter. With the end of apartheid there was great hope, but for the Cape Flats, hope has turned into a nightmare. Gangs roam with impunity amongst the poverty and the terrorized citizens. Social disorganization theory does well to explain the cruel reality. The so called British Citizens and the Americans are youthful examples of the act of self-destruction. In circumstances such as these, there is no hope, and as a result there is no respect for human life. It is a common thread for this course.

  16. Thanks for the information! I am looking to travel to Cape Town. A friend asked me if it is cape town safe for tourists. I initially was unsure, but after doing research I found out that it is and I can't wait to come to Cape Town!
