This article made me so angry! This guy better get the death penalty. He randomly opened fire in an IHOP in Nevada. He killed 5 people and injured 6. Of the dead were National Guard members and a 67 year old civilian woman. The National Guard members of course survive Iraq and Afghanistan just to be gunned down by one of their fellow Americans. And who kills a 67 year old woman for no reason?! Of course the man may have had some type of mental illness but even then his parents should have done something before and maybe this wouldn’t have happened. He should be killed, mental illness or not. If we don’t he could get out of his mental institution just to do this again or reproduce his messed up genetics. Animals are smart enough to kill their spawn when they know there is something wrong with them so we should kill this guy now and many more like him, mentally ill or not.

  2. I have been hearing about this case on and off for the past couple of weeks, and the government’s story continually down plays their actions and the seriousness of this failed operation. Now it is known that not only was the ATF involved in this act and cover-up but so was the FBI and the DOJ. All of these organizations had a hand in giving guns to the cartels in Mexico, the people we are attempting to keep out of the US, and then failing to trace them. This demonstrates governmental crime, which is an aspect of white-collar crime. These organizations are deflecting the blame and solely blaming the director of the ATF, Ken Melson, for their acts of stupidity and incompetence. Some media outlets have also suggested that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder had previous knowledge of this badly planned act, and did nothing to stop the operation. These two people that represent our government only took action after US citizens were killed with the guns that our government officials gave to our enemy. Their actions did not involve accepting responsibility; their actions simply blamed others for the failed operations. I truly believe that both Eric Holder and President Obama had previous knowledge of this operation and failed to act appropriately, and now are trying everything within and even beyond their power to cover-up their actions.

  3. This is a very sad story. I understand what the ATF was trying to do but they got a border patrol agent killed. I know they were waiting so they can catch the entire, or as much as they can, drug trafficking organizations, but did they not already have enough as it is? After reading on and learning that the FBI and DEA were involved just makes me wonder what all the government keeps from us. I don't understand why they did not follow up on the gun issue like they supposedly said they did. If what Melson said in his testimony was true then this just shows that some of these government agency's can do what they want. It is not right when they see all these different people spending hundred thousands of dollars on weapons and not do anything about it and now someone is killed.

  4. I agree that this is a very sad story. I actually first read about it this morning via the LA Times. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-atf-guns-20110912,0,7611438.story In that particular article they actually talked to the owner of the store where these illegal gun purchases were made. What caught my attention was that here is a United States citizen who had more brains then the ATF. He kept saying that someone was going to get hurt and that this operation run this way was a bad idea. The article even mentions how at one point he knew that the agents were not watching when one of the purchases was made so he went to all the trouble to send them the information necessary about the transaction. Even so, they still never managed to catch up with that purchase. The other part that shocked me was the amount of guns from this operation that we now have showing up at various violent crime spots. I personally am not sure if the ATF just does not have the personnel or ability to be running an operation of this size, but to me what started out as a good idea could end up with a bloody ending.
I am very tempted to agree with Bailey on the idea of there being some governmental white collar crime going on. The part that is throwing me off is the fact that mixed in the case we have violent crimes being committed, as well as a black market for selling guns, and then the fact that the guns are being purchased illegally. I am wondering if it could be prosecuted as a sort of corporate crime (even though there is not technically a corporation involved) since it entails a large group of people, or if it will end up that one person ends up being the scapegoat. Any ideas?

  5. Really, are you surprised at this news? War is BIG business. The movies have picked up on these covert dealing operations for years. It is sad that a man’s life is the cost of doing business to the DEA, DTO, FBI, and the ATF. You have to wonder, so they catch the straw purchasers, 20 people, and they are convicted and processed into our overcrowded prison system, while 20 other people are taking their places and carrying out their mission. There are hundreds of weapons out there in the hands of people who intend to use them on people, not hunting for food. Has Congress and the Attorney General gotten so self righteous that the American people have become the cost of doing business for them? Politicians, for the most part, are master manipulators of the truth, how can we feed this to the public so they can swallow this time? Sugar coated, twisted, and tainted truths to justify, what happens to be illegal for the rest of us, to push through their agenda to completion.

  7. Did I seriously just read this article? -__- I don’t even know how to react. Our government knew of these purchases, and expected smugglers to deliver the guns to Mexican drug trafficking organizations, and they did nothing because they were attempting to, “uncover the entirety of the smuggling operations.” However, because this decision to, basically, “play bait,” in December 2010, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, was murdered and, “two rifles sold to a smuggler in the course of the operation—ended up at the scene.” And of course, to top it all off this operation didn’t lead to the complete success originally expected and actually failed completely, because two of those guns, turned up at the murder scene of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent. In my opinion, playing bait is a really big gamble especially when considering the involvement of guns and the Mexican cartel. I know that sometimes these types of gambles need to be taken, but I am also, sad to know that this specific operation tied back specifically to the murder of Brian Terry.

  8. Ak-47s!! Are you kidding me? No other firearm in this planet has killed more people than an AK-47 and our government is giving them to the cartels. This is yet another example of the poor leadership of this President and our law enforcement agencies. If you’re going to sale gunning to the bad guys you track the hell out of them. You don’t install a radio shack GPS on them and hope for the best. Will that border agent’s family ever see the person responsible for those guns in the hands of the murders? No, because for some reason we allow our leaders to break laws and we do nothing.
