  1. After so many incidents where students bring weapons to schools, I'd expect all schools to be taking the necessary security measures to avoid such incidents. By simply having a metal detector in all entrances and searching backpacks, this stabbing spree (I believe) could have been avoided. Many might think this type of measure to be a bit too much, but I believe its the least that can be done in order to protect students and faculty. Schools might not be the first place one thinks of in terms danger, but as evidenced by multiple incidents, it is one of the main places where these types of actions are taking place. More action needs to be taken in order to ensure the safety of everybody at school and so students like Alex Hribal don't commit acts like the one he committed that could ultimately ruin the rest of his life.

  2. I think its ridiculous that a boy could stab 20+ people without any one doing anything. This boy doesn't look like he is the strongest man in the world and there appears to be no slicing. It's a shame that after all the school student on student violence has happened, schools have not figured out a way to better protect their students. I don't think it would be difficult to take a little money out of high titled people and fund for more security. Although this teenager is definitely in the wrong, I feel like he is going to be made out of an example as we are tired of seeing the violence. This looks terrible on school systems as there is no way a sophomore with a kitchen knife should be able to stab 20+ people successfully without an administrator stepping up to save the school.

  3. This is crazy.. You would THINK that after previous school attacks happening within the students themselves, they would come up with better ways to try to make the schools a safer place by putting school officers on duty. This alone could help prevent so many problems, including instances like this one where a student attacks multiple other people and can potentially kill. There is absolutely no way that a young high school student like this guy should have even had enough time to stab 20+ students without anybody stopping him.

  4. I am deeply sadden by the tragedy of this school stabbing. I really think something needs to be put in place to assure that these type of incidents will not keep occurring. The problem I feel is lack of security measures......where were the metal detectors? It is no surprise that these attacks upon school property keep happening, how many more lives do we need to lose in order to get it together? And I'm a little bit puzzled as to how that many people were stabbed by this young man? A knife is more up close and personal, I could see if it was guns involved yeah but that many with one suspect wielding two knives. Well I am glad no one as died as a result of this tragedy so for. Pray , pray, and pray some more the youth of today. Something is terribly wrong with all of this--who has the answer to all of the question that need to be answered?

The sad truth is that there are no security measures that schools can take to prevent these incidences. The only hope is to minimize the damage. Statics show in domestic violence assaults that not even police presence could prevent a person who is hell bent on harming himself or others from doing so. Police officers have lost their lives upon answering DV calls. If an individual wants to hurt someone he or she will find away. I do believe we should look to mental health as an avenue to address such violence. I am interning at a place where mental health and substance abuse is an issue. At any given moment one of these individuals could become violent using whatever they at their disposal as a weapon. We should identify and look for ways to address these concerns while children are in elementary school. I have seen a first grader destroy a classroom and intimidate classmates, the child is sent to the office only to return to the classroom the someday. We must get these children help as they maybe the next Alex Hribal.

I feel for the parents, this have to be an unexpected and very distressing for them. Not known why this occurred are what he was thinking at the time. We all have to be accountable for what we do, today I pray these young kids (because they do not what they do) as in science let us not turn a blind eye to the cause-and –effect principles, he will be tried as adult I think this was attempted murder.
Our schools today are less safe now than they were, look at what happen in columbine, Virginia Tech and the others. I question his mental capacity when he grabs the knives and headed to school, he had plenty of time to come to his senses. Another one will be made an example of, a violent perpetrator. A lack of common sense and self control to realize a more constructive way to voice their anger and their emotional outbursts. If only the madness will stop.

  6. They should treat Alex Hribal as an adult in this case. There are too many victims in this stabbing rampage, precisely 22 injured, for Hribal to receive leniency as a juvenile. I do believe in trying to rehabilitate troubled youths, but this incident exceeds that option by far. The book of law should be thrown at this kid. This will set the example for other kids of deviance to think, rethink, and think again before attempting something of this magnitude. It’s a sad situation for both victims and assailant. Yes, victims for their injuries, but also for the young aggressor who threw his life’s future down the toilet. Also, the assistant principle, Sam King, should be recognized for his bravery. He subdued the threat before security guards and police officers.

  7. This particular post is difficult for me due to the fact it is a teenager who was responsible for this attack on all of these innocent people. I am sure in the future we will learn more about the details of this crime. As I have continued to learn more as a student in criminal justice I have learned more about the teenage brain and the complexities that are involved when teens commit crimes. I can’t help but to wonder was this child well mentally before this attack or had he been plagued with the problems we hear that people like Adam Lanza and many others who perpetrate these crimes are plagued with yet we force them into society to assimilate with us because it is in the “best interest” of the individual who suffers from the mental disability. I think we need to step back and ask ourselves is it what that individual even wants. There was a time when people had a choice this world and our society may expect too much from them. Within our society it is easy to judge when we do not know all of the details. What is true is several innocent people were terribly injured and they will never be the same. This boy has inflicted fear upon this community and in order to effect change in the future we have to take a closer look at ourselves first.

I just don’t understand kids today, we as parents work so hard for them to have a better life. This right here was a sad situation no one know how his brain was function, no one can recognize the warning sign of ours troubled youth today. This young kid, his whole life is ruined all because of his rage, he had the intend to stabbed something are somebody. Should we use a mental illness for criminals?
Mental illness may be a factor in the situation, but it is never an excuse. It may be a forceful reason, but not an excuse each person is responsible for what they do, It the choices especially the reasons behind them. Just because someone has this mental illness and is not with intent or knowingly doing evil, he set out with the intend of doing something’s to some body
What I hope and praying for is his parents can face this cruel world that we live in as they have to deal with the actions of their young son. I know they are asking their self why? They didn’t see some kind of sign.

  9. I think this kid might be more than “a little misunderstood” considering he stabbed 22 people. The only thing he has going for him is that nobody was killed in his stabbing spree, although I think one is still in critical condition. His attorney is saying he is scared and confused and didn’t realize how serious his crime was, obviously there is something mentally wrong with Hribal. Mental illness shouldn’t be an excuse for leniency; however, I don’t think he should be given life in prison because that won’t do any good. He should still be tried as an adult, but I think time in a mental facility will do more good than a prison sentence. Despite the horrifying crime committed I don’t think this kids life should be spent rotting in a prison cell.

  10. I personally do not believe juveniles should be tried as adults no matter the offense. Either we consider them children at at an attained age or they are adults, with all the rights and privileges of an adult. Maybe we should take a look at changing some of the processes or penalties in the juvenile court where a heinous offense by a juvenile is addressed on that level. I do not believe a 16 yr old should be placed in an adult correctional facility. Although there are pros to transferring a child an adult the cons out weigh the pros:
    Pros:
Minors have the right to a jury trial in adult court
Juries in adult court may be more sympathetic to a minor.
If dockets and jails are crowded, the court may be inclined to dispose of the juvenile's case more quickly and impose a lighter sentence

    Cons:
The juvenile is subject to more severe sentences, including life sentences.
Judges in adult court do not have the wide range of punishment and treatment options that are available to juvenile court judges -- such as imposing a curfew or ordering counseling instead of jail time.
Serve time in adult jail or prison, rather than in juvenile detention centers.
A conviction in adult criminal court carries more social stigma than a juvenile court judgment does.
Harder to seal juvenile court records -- sealing or "expunging" records makes them unavailable to the public.

  11. I truly believe that Alex Hribal should be wavered from the juvenile system to the adult system. I do have reason to believe that he did have time to permeate this horrendous act. The evidence is all their; he took kitchen knives to school (which he planned to according to my judgment), and also start stabling people. Obviously it is intent to these actions. Though his attorney did say that Alex does feel confused about what he did, I think that he is just using that as a scapegoat to get off the hook.

  12. In my personal opinion, I do not see juveniles (to a reasonable degree) as any less responsible for their actions as adults are. It is reasonable to let someone off or even punish them less severely as an adult if they were simply experimenting and it was their first time. After the first few stabs, presuming they were in rapid succession, there was no more remorse or savior of this kid. Once he felt what it was like potentially taking someone's life, it is absolutely not okay for him to continue to experiment with a as many as he did. If he was in a psychotic trance, then he should be institutionalized because he would be a liability to others and clearly out of his own control. If he is just a sadistic, lonely person begging for attention, then it may be looked at as less serious as a psychotic trance, but 22 people isn't a cry for help, it is a warrant for help. Actually, based on this kids testimony and those around him, including his parents, I wouldn't say it's too far fetched to say that this kid came across the AMC show Bates Motel, (a prequel series to the 1950's classic, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho"), or something similar like Dexter, and decided that he could use the psychotic trance excuse to do what he did, get the attention, and divert blame away from his sadistic mind. I don't know, its just conjecture but that is what I am drawing from the situation.

In the case of him being tried as a juvenile, he stabbed 22 people. Coming back to the point I made before about granting a less serious punishment for experimentation: experimentation does not in any way require 22 subjects in order to determine what it is like to stab someone. As previously stated, if the first few were in rapid succession in a fit of rage, he should have quickly realized what he was doing and immediately realized the gravity of what he was doing. This person needs to be tried as an adult. He either knew what he was doing or is a psychopath that needs to be separated from society.

  13. I truly believe that these type of tragedies can be avoided if schools could work on having more security such as metal detectors or security officers patrolling the school during all school hours. Everytimes these type of things happen, parents grow fear of what can happen as soon as their child arrives the school campus. Students are greatly affected due to the fact that they aren't in a safe learning environment anymore, and they run the risk of being victims of any type of tragedy . I believe that before charging this 16 year old sophomore as an adult, he should be examined to see if he has any psychiatric problems, or if he is mentally ill. There were some of the students that said that it seemed that he had a side that no one knew about, so we'll have to see whats going on with the causes that led him to committ all these stabbings. If he comes out clean and clear without and problems of being bullied, or no symptoms of mental problems, then he should be punished as an adult and face the consequences for this bloody crime that he perfomed. Lets keep in mind that they say he seems afraid, but he hasn't apologized or said he regrets for doing all this.

  14. Recently hearing the story on the boy who killed a girl at school for rejecting his prom offer goes to prove that this is a problem past security. I think that psychologically the value of life has been degraded to teens. Watching behavior such as drugs and the amount of school shootings, I feel people are beginning to be desensitized to death. This is a world problem and not just a school student problem as these same children will grow and have families breeding this behavior and their way of thinking. I don't know the solution but this could get worse if we do not figure out a way to hit home to children and help them understand that life is valuable even their own.

  15. It is extremely crazy that after having several school attacks we are still not doing anything to make sure that our students and faculty are safe. It is obvious that we are going to continue to have more school attacks because students are seeing that no one is doing anything to stop the violence. Some criminals might even decide to commit a similar crime because they see how much publicity school attacks get. In this particular case I feel like if this student was not being bully then he had a mental disorder way before this attack. Teenagers that bully or are bullied both have low self esteem. In most cases they try to act tough to get past their feelings of self worth. In this case it could be possible that Alex Hribal was being bully because of his appearance, he looks very skinny and innocent. To me it seems like he wanted to look tough, and he did that by going down the hall stabbing students left and right without saying one word. Alex Hribal knew what he was doing and should be incarcerated for many years, but he also needs mental help.

  16. This is crazy that a kid was able to go around his school and stab 20+ people. It just shows that the school need to have a better plan in place in case of something else like that. If that kid had a guy than he could have got double that.I think there should be at least one officer per high school. It will put people that are train to handle situations closer to them. But i am happy they are putting them in the adult system. And they plea of mental health is a defense that hardly ever work. The kid in my mind dead what he did because of tv now a days, with shows like dexter that put the criminal act at the center of it whole plot. That would go with the ideal of social learning. people need to get there kid outdoor and have them play with other kids.

  17. I think the young man had some mental issues, but I feel that the bullying could have been the “straw that broke the camel’s back”. Now it has been known that when someone is under a lot of pressure and is on the verge of breaking, that people do so “Black out” during certain rampage situations. But with that said, I feel that the young in questioning is using that as an excuse to try to save his own butt from having either serious charges brought up, seeing that he is being charged as an adult, or he is using this to try to get out of going to a regular prison where he will be getting “stabbed” repeatedly by a bunch of “Mandingo’s”. The way they describe how he went about doing it, he meant to harm people and by the looks of it, he was random about his victims.

  18. I cannot believe this type of accidents continue to happen in our school all around the country. We just do not learn from our past experiences. We need to do something to protect the kids in our school. This kid is surely misunderstood; in order for him to do suck a horrible act as to stab 22 of his classmates is terrifying. I definitely believe this kid need to be help accountable for his actions, there is no way he is in his right mind to stab so many people. We need to have severe actions being taken against all this kids who think they can just walk into a school and start harming people. Only because they are juveniles does not mean they shouldn’t be held accountable for they actions they are just as liable as an adult would be.

  19. First off, I cannot bare to understand the lack of security in schools today. As far as the kid goes, he must have some mental problems because according to the students he was off but they could not pin point anything. After the many school shootings in the past couple years, this just makes no sense. You would think the school would be prepared for not only a shooting but anything that could happen such as a student bringing in a sharp weapon to stab people with.
I can't imagine the horror these innocent students had to go through with seeing all the blood and chaos and their own peers laying on the ground gushing with blood. Such a shame... so sad.

  20. Wow, there is a much bigger issue at hand. I believe all these incidents of violence in school and public places are symptoms of a much larger problem. I understand we all don't have the same beliefs theologically, but for me I see it directly related with the increase of moral relativism and the transgression of our society. Alex Hribal was reported to being scared, depressed and confused after the incident. He himself was in shock of the actions he committed. This does not take away or make him more innocent what so ever. It only shows psychologically he was not all there and more than likely induced by other personal influencing factors. Sadly, I believe incidents like these will increase, and our response so far has been to tighten security and the access to weapons that can be used with intent of harming other individuals. This may be a good step, but most it not all of these crimes have been committed where weapons were already banned (school zones, post offices, malls etc.). This only shows that the banning of weapons does to an extent reduce the risk of such incidents but it also shows that it does not entirely clear the threat of the occurrences. I believe it is possible that media and entertainment have a huge influence on the adolescent and youth. Yes, we see these acts as terrible in reality. Do we not? So why do we watch shows that glorify violence and horrendous acts? I understand many people might argue with my position, but if we are fast to see the reality of it is horrible, again, why is one of the largest and most successful businesses in entertainment littered,( from minimal to extreme) with the use of violence and gore? I am not arguing all forms of entertainment embody this, but in reflection of some of the most popular shows, many display some ironic forms of visual amusement.

  21. Stories like this really piss me off. I think back to when I was in junior high school and I don't know how something like this is even possible. First of all, addressing the fact that this kid was even able to injure 22 people is absolutely ridiculous to begin with. I don't know how physically he was able to commit a crime so massive without being stopped first. This is why I believe that there should be multiple police officers on campus at all schools. As much as I think security guards are important on campuses, there need to be ARMED personnel that can use whatever force/weapons necessary to take a threat out. We hear about all these school shootings and gun attacks that are happening in our society, yet we have a government that is trying to take guns away from civilians to protect people and themselves from situations like this... Makes absolutely no sense to me. Bad people or unstable people(like this student) will always find a way to commit a crime and if we take away good peoples means of protection we will be screwed.

It upsets me to hear that this young boy felt confused and scared after this attack because it most likely could have been prevented. People don't just jump to crazy stunts like this. There had to be some type of warning signs. We as people need to be more vigilant when dealing with people because there are ways to see someone breaking down before it actually happens. I'm sure that if someone would have taken a little bit more time, they would have seen that something was seriously wrong with this boy.

As far as his punishment, I don't give a shit about how old this kid is or if this is his first offense or whatever. He attacked 22 people, this is excessive, and he deserves to serve a time that a 40 year old man would serve. We all know that if he were a 40 year old man and went into school and did the same crime he would be sentenced accordingly.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is CRAZY it seems like schools don't realize there are crazy people out their and that they need to take in consideration of what went on in other schools. This kid crazy attacked 22 people and nobody did anything about it. he deserves what any old person would get in prison because we all know that his punishment is going to be greatly reduced and not being sentenced like an adult would be. Isn't this the reason why their is security and police officers on duty at all times in schools? People like this will always find a way to commit the crime we just need to learn how to stop them from doing this.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's scary to think that we aren't safe in a place like school, which is like second homes for students. I don't know if the kid even knew how much harm he would be causing by doing this. It seems like he was a bit confused about the whole situation, maybe it got more out of control than he expected. He has to be charged and punished for his actions of course. There has to be something wrong with him, but it seems like he didn't show much because even his parents knew nothing about it. There has to be a way to prevent these type of situations to continue to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I feel like the school should of handled it better, if there a security police officer. it shouldn't escalated to 22 people until the law enforcement to stop it. It's scary how this kid even got to 22 people at school that's crazy. I think the school officers on duty should do a better job to protect our kids at school, its suppose to be the safest place besides home. As far as punishments I don't care what they do with this kid as long as he gets what he deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  25. UGH!!!What is going on with these kids today? I just do not understand why there are young kids who just show up at school and start hurting other kids to prove a point. Obviously, we have not set a good enough example of the kids in the past who have done this. I do feel sorry for the one’s who have bad home lives or have been bullied at school, but two wrongs do not make a right. There are so many programs in place now for bullying in school, how does it get so out of hand that a kid feels his only way out is to hurt or kill. The problem is too that it is not just the kids that are doing the bullying that are getting hurt or killed, there are a lot of innocent kids and faculty who get caught in the crossfire that do not deserve it. He committed an adult crime with intent and some premeditation or he would not have known to bring the knives to school with him. He should be tried as an adult, he is close enough in age and due to the horrific nature of the crime it should not be taken lightly.

  26. These school shooting/act of violence issues are getting old. Something needs to be done with security as well as psychological help with disturbed students. It's obvious from the quotes by fellow classmates that he had more than enough issues. Im surprised the security guard was unable to disarm this 16 year old that had butter knives. I do believe this kid needs to be charged as an adult. Many solutions have been thrown around to solve these problems but I feel as if we are getting nowhere. Hopefully something can be compromised and a final solution to the problem can be found.

  27. Kids these days are going crazy, it is not exactly there fault and the authorities could have handled it better than they did. The schools should be better protected and it is difficult to believe a security guard was scared of a 16 year old. He is a child who is weaker and this whole situation could have been handled differently.
