  1. This is scary. Sadly I say the parents are to blame. First, that weapon should have been properly secured in a safe or under lock and key somehow. If you’re going to have a weapon make sure it’s unobtainable to anyone but the authoritative figure in the house. Even in the military we have to put our weapon in an armory, if we are stateside. Now as far as parenting goes apparently it’s a hit or miss according to this juvenile textbook I have before me right now. Which I can totally agree with. I like to say I’m going to be the perfect dad but who knows. I do plan to be extremely intrusive in every aspect of my boys’ lives. If I’m not at work, everywhere they go I’ll be a stalking. I will search their rooms, backpacks, etc. Just common knowledge can tell you if an individual is disturbed in some way. Back to this textbook, apparently a majority of school shooters have a past of depression from bullying. Maybe parents should have mandatory classes just like kids to inform them what to look for. Though I am strongly against government intervention, parents might as well have a mandatory depression information day per year. Our kids are required to go to school we might as well be required to sit through a session on what to look for in a troubled child. I say this because the situation is apparently not getting any better. Kids are the most important thing on this planet. Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

  2. ..I find your points.... interesting, I have a questions, Did your parents ever search your bag, room, etc.? If you own a weapon, what kind of safe do you have?

  3. Depending on how the family of this child had the weapon secured, I would agree to maybe rechecking the secureness of how this weapon was secured. I did not read anything in the article about the shotgun just being thrown on the floor, put in the closet that doesn’t lock, or hung above the fire place. Now there is a chance that they did have a gun safe, and like my military friend above my comment, depending on the lock system and a person’s set of skills and or in my case, military occupation, that certain locks can be picked. Let me ask you if you know of any family that has an armory like the military or police force or for that matter, a family that can afford the most impenetrable gun safe? I’ve seen the guns safes that are sold at some places and if you go on you tube, anybody can get a play by play of how to pick a lock (FYI: The lock system that is on the doors that are at school, have been known to be easier than a lock on your house door and they are supposed to be more secure ), and I hate to say it but if you are determined to do something, how often was there an obstacle that you let keep you from achieving your goal?
Now my question when it comes to the article is, if they are saying that the 12 year old boy was being bullied and he ends up shooting a 11 year old boy twice in the face, along with a 13 year old girl, why are they asking Homeland Security to step in? What evidence do they have to show that it could be gang related? I don’t know much about gangs but if this boy was a “smart and nice kids”, then what would a gang want with the kid? The only reason I could see that the gang would prey on him would be the fact that he is being bullied (Gangs prey on someone’s weakness to use to conform them into the gang). I have to point out that this boy was very familiar with that shotgun……. think people, two shots to the face?! If you have shot a shotgun, you would understand. A positive note is that the boy more than likely knew the proper way to use the gun and the safety features.
Overall, this is another sad story.

  4. IT WAS ALIENS... Sorry, terrible joke, but I couldn't resist. What happened here is a tragedy, and thankfully nobody died. In response to Clinton's comment, I wouldn't think they would call in Homeland Security Investigations to step in and help if they didn't have anything to go on (if they're implying it was gang-related, I mean). Consider the possibility that they are withholding information from the public in case it is a gang-related shooting in order to get closer to solving it. Assuming the girl, Odiee Carranza, was right about him being a "smart kid and nice kid," as well as her suspicion that he was being bullied at school, it doesn't seem too far fetched to think, at least for me, of a pretty basic scenario. Smart kid gets bullied, becomes hurt by it, realize he is feeling this way because of people who are intellectually inferior to him, smart kid becomes resentful and hateful, he is recognized as a victim and approached by a gang member, smart kid is then exploited by said gang, filling his head with thoughts of revenge and how a kid as smart as him shouldn't be able to be bullied by people who are weaker than him. The motive of currently hypothetical gang could be anything (hurting child of rival gang member, or something like that). There's just a lot of questions to be asked. Who supplied the shotgun? Did his household even have weapons in it? Was the kid even in band? Did he ever have fits of rage before? If not, would it be safe to think he thought this out long and hard? If it was so premeditated, and again assuming he was actually smart, then he must've really want to see these people dead or seriously hurt to face the consequences of those actions. I don't know, I love speculating and I've got a wild imagination but I don't see it being too far fetched to think that it could be gang-related.

  5. This is a very scary and sad tragedy for the students, parents and the whole society. These type of sad tragedies are the consequences of parents not being responsible of securing their firearms. I believe that parents who have children of around this age shouldnt even let them know that they own a firearm. I also believe that these tragedies can be avoided by the parents being closer to the child who commited this tragedy. If the kid was being bullied, the parents and teachers should of been the first to know about this. Being close to your children, asking questions about what they go through on a daily basis is very important and plays a huge role in a childs life, especially in this particular age. If the kid was really being bullied, it might have been very noticable and gotten to a really bad point, in which this very "smart and nice kid" decided to commit this tragedy. Yet, there are still many unsolved questions, but i really doubt that it was gang related.

  7. It is extremely sad knowing how insecure kids are while being at school nowadays. Parents should feel comfortable dropping off their kids at school instead of feeling scared. Every school should start thinking of different ways to stop this from happening over and over again. I think more security should be the number one priority for every school. Each school shooting is different, but at the end all the victims are innocent. In this particular school shooting the shooter was described as a “smart kid and nice kid”, which raises the possibility that he was being bullied at school. It could be possible that the shooter was being bullied constantly and maybe never asked for help. The 12-year old boy should be punished for what he did, but he should also receive counseling to help him fully understand how serious this crime is. After reading the article everything seems to be possible, it could be possible that the 12-year old boy is part of a gang but it could also be possible that he was just another little kid who was being bullied at school. I think it is a good idea to have the Homeland Security Investigations step in because it is a way to really help not only the students but also the parents of the victims who are looking for the truth.

  8. I heard about this story almost immediately after it happened because I have a few family and friends that live in the Roswell area. It's such a tragedy to see that kids in school aren't safe and that this is such a common occurrence. It really hit me when I heard he took the gun in his band case because my brother plays an instrument in middle school and it's scary to think about what those classmates can be capable of. I'm wondering how the child had such good aim because he hit his victims in the face and in the arm. Were there more people around? How much time could it have taken him to plan all of this or was it just a spur of the moment kind of thing? How did he have access to this weapon and did he show signs that he might commit such a crime? I think there are too many questions left unanswered. The parents must be going through a lot and I think homeland security should step up, whether this is gang related or not.

  9. It is a relief to hear that only 2 people were injured and that no deaths were reported at this N.M middle school shooting. Most families in America keep handguns at their homes. Because of a number of gun fire incidents that have occurred in our nation's schools, those families with guns in their homes should really target-harden and lock and secure their weapons in order to prevent young people from having easy access to the weapon. I own a hand gun and I've concealed it in a safe place. Only my father and I have access to it. I have a 16 year-old brother who is an 'A' student and involved in a number of extra curricular activities that keep him busy at his high school. In my worst nightmare, we wakes up one day and is having a horrible day. For some complete odd reason he decides he wants to test out my firearm on a person who made him extremely angry. He wouldn't do such a thing but as a gun owner, one should think of such circumstances.
His parents should be partially responsible for keeping a weapon accessible for him to use, if it belonged to one of the subject's parents.

  10. Teachers need to start having more one on one time with the students, I believe that, that would give a bullied student time to tell a teacher what is going on. That child's life is over now and it never really started. School is somewhere where kids can feel safe, so if we put one on one time with a teacher for a certain amount of time at least once a week, then they'd have to talk about something.

  11. Almost every person now in days have handguns. Im not necessarily glad but is a relief like daisy said only two people got injured. I suppose if you know you have a chin your home you tend to keep these kind of things away from reach. They need to be ebb more careful and have them in safe places concealed and with locks on them. These parents should be blamed and have a guilty conscience. This child might have the blame for what he did but his parents should not have left the gun at his reach. Gangs have nothing to do with this story and homeland have nothing to investigate this is a every day mistake that could of been taken care of if they simply had been more careful. I certainly believe teachers should be able to provide protection for the children when in their care but to go to the extreme of having to carry a gun is beyond. But if you see what the child did it shows you he had thought it out to go and place it in your instrument holder is thinkable. I have a brother and is scary to know he could be thinking like this at his age when he could be enjoying other things.

  12. Yet another school shooting. School shooting are or have already become like a "norm" thing that happens such as murder. And so not much is being done about it.

  13. It is sad how schools are not safe anymore and these children will be forever traumatized. I don't see how people think it is ok to just shoot up a school when schools are meant to educate and protect the students, not to be hurt or killed.

  14. This is a very scary occurrence. I know that the parents of all the children that were at the school at the time of the shooting had to be panicked and worried to the point of craziness and anticipation of hoping to see their child alive and well. I just can not imagine getting the news that my child's school had a shooting much less hearing that my child might have been one of the ones shot. I know that bullying is a serious and degrading thing that has been spiraling out of control. This is a problem that we need to address at a more abundant level and take care of these problems before someone gets hurt and does more harm. This is not an isolated case there have been many bullying incidents that have led to the person being bullied dying by their own hand (suicide). We as parents need to be more vigilant about our children and make sure that if we have weapons in the house we keep them out of the reach of the children. I also feel that keeping an eye on any changes in our children's behavior will help us know when a problem may be arising. The more we are aware the less chance we have of our child becoming another statistic or causing a tragedy like this one. I feel for the parents of the children shot and the child that did the shooting and I will continue praying for them that things might make a turn for the best for all involved.

  15. This occurrence in New Mexico is not the first and sadly not the last for this to happen. I believe children are being influenced by media in the glorifying of retribution through violence. This is not saying it is the only thing that can explain the occurrences. Of course there are many factors playing to this like the parents of the child, mental health, friends or not lack of friends. It is only just a hair of probably what the reality is, but to ask the department of homeland security to start investigating...Why? Why not get the local police involved instead? The DHS should be more involved with what's going on outside the border and traffic coming in, NOT what's happening inside the borders. People can talk about gun control or whatever, but the truth is those who do not adhere to the law will more than likely find firearms or weapons of opportunity elsewhere if they really want to. Constricting weapons to only the government and the law enforcement is a dangerous, dangerous thing. The people who are employed and elected as these officials/officers are human beings just as well as anyone else. They are not above or immune to the vulnerabilities all conscious human beings are subject to. They are just as susceptible to malevolence.

  16. So what needs to be in place for these school shootings to stop????? I am appalled by all of these school shootings taking place around the globe. Yes something drastic needs to be implemented to stop the madness. So it was reported that some of the kids believed the shooter was being bullied at school. This too need to be handled. I'm sorry there are telltale signs of someone that is being bullied. I am a parent and a grandparent and I knew when something was not right with one of my kids/grandson. You can not tell me that this boy's parent didn't know he was experiencing difficulties at home as well as in school-somebody knew something. I think all schools should have some type of coping skills classes that are designed to help students who are being bullied, Parents as well need to be educate as to what signs to look for, because if your child is being bullied , nine times of ten they are not acting the same as they normally would. Please people seek help or these school shootings will continue to happen.

  17. It saddens me to hear about shooting suck as the one in New Mexico. This kids are in middle school they should be going to school to learn and have fun with their friends. This kids should not have to worry about being shot or stabbed or anything of that sort, schools are suppose to be a safe environment for children not a place they are afraid to go to everyday. We must enforce our schools security, we cannot continue to have this unfortunate but preventable situations happen in our country. Innocent kids are being killed. The worst part of all this is that it is kids who are killing other kids.

  18. School shootings are terribly sad and what is even more sad is how many there have been. There needs to be heavier police personnel at schools, bottom line. Security guards are great, I'm not trying to take anything away from them. However, they are not equipped with the same type of training and defense weapons that police officers are.

Bullying is a serious problem in our society right now and I truly feel sorry for victims but I feel in more sorry for the sick people that bully others. These kids that are bullied at such a young age are often times not able to cope and deal with situation like more mature people are. I wish there was more being done to stop bullying but the more I think about it what more can really be done? Society will always judge and will always find something wrong with people who aren't normal in their eyes. So until society changes as a whole and learns to be accepting and non-judgmental... bullying will always exist. As much as it pains me to say this, I don't think that society will ever accept people. This young child felt that the only way he could deal with this situation was to shoot them and that is so sad. However, I think that he needs to be punished for his actions seriously. If we let kids like this get away with shooting others because of bullying we are telling society but more importantly these kids that dealing with problems with violence is okay and that is so wrong.

  19. This type of behavior is starting to get redundant. I do feel sorry for the kid that is getting bullied, but due to the fact that this type of behavior has happened so many times in the past, this kid had to know it was wrong. He obviously thought it out carefully, because putting a shotgun in an instrument case is down right smart. He knew it would not be checked because so many kids carry their instruments to school for band practice. It is staring to get to the point where every school is going to have to have metal detectors, armed security guards, and constant surveillance while kids are in school just to insure their safety from these kinds of situations. Of course many people will try to blame it on guns, instead of trying to get down to the root of the problem which is kids just are not disciplined enough now days. If my child ever bullied or was purposely mean to another kid, she would get a spanking and be punished for treating someone that way. These kids need to stand together and when they see a kid getting bullied, tell the kid doing the bullying that its wrong and how would he or she like it if they were getting treated that way. There is strength in numbers.
