School Shooting in Hazard, Kentucky

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/01/16/fatalities-reported-in-shooting-at-kentucky-college/ School Shooting in Hazard, Kentucky. What needs to be done to stop school violence of this magnitude?

  1. It is important that we take these events as serious as possible and that we deal with them as quick as possible. I don't feel like this shooting is as big of a shooting as some of the past school shootings, but on the other hand, this is a crime and I do feel that this is a terrible tragedy that should be handled as any other murder of shooting. Better security personnel and surveillance systems are things that I believe can help catch the people who commit these crimes are attempt to prevent them. It is difficult to completely prevent these events from happening as there are so many criminals around that are capable of committing crimes one way or another, even if guns are made illegal or any so called gun laws are passed. There will always be guns and ways for people to get their hands on them.

Let me start off by saying that my heart goes out to the friends, family, and loved ones of the female and male that was murdered while on school grounds. First off, I think that this school in Kentucky must not have good security. If so, this could have possibly been prevented. I say this because if there is security constantly driving around patrolling the campus at all times, it makes it more difficult for someone to commit a crime like this. Not saying that better security would completely prevent all crime but it would definitely help lessen crime. I am guessing that this college campus did not have surveillance cameras That would have helped out a lot. They would have had photographs of the shooter, surely someone would be able to recognize he or she. They would also have a possible license plate and just a better description of everything. But instead they have nothing but a random guy saying that he may have some information. This is very sad, security needs to be enforced at all times no matter how high or low a crime rate is in certain areas because things like this can happen in a blink of an eye.

  4. Judging by what I have learned thus far in Criminal Justice this constitutes the .2 percent of the one percent of serious crimes reported to the police. Since this incident occurred on a college campus I suppose it would be practically impossible to ignore. This, in my opinion, is an extremely odd place for a domestic dispute to take place, perhaps they were former students. It’s baffling the people involved did not even attend the college. I suppose though a junior college is a good spot to conduct shady business out in the open. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were a robbery gone terribly awry. At a community college anyone could fit the part of a student. However it appears the security needs to be increased, better educated, or acquire a little more motivation. Perhaps it was security team full of new guys and they hadn’t figured out how to pick-up on student patterns. It’s good to hear the police already either have a brave witness or a very stupid suspect on their hands. It would be hard, for some people, to go in and talk about that horrendous act they just watch unfurl. I hope for the sake of these unfortunate people that were shot to death, the person responsible is harshly punished to the full extent of the law.

  5. The school system should do a better job of protecting its students. A
They should start installing metal detectors. This will not stop a real criminal from doing what he intends to. Schools should start paying more attention to causes of violence that cause a person to become angry and liable to do things to this magnitude in the first place. Such as bullying, violence in the home and depression. Schools should focus on the root of the problem. If a child is happy and healthy then unless there is a mental disorder involved. Zero tolerance policies involving drug, weapons, and gang violence should be a priority in schools as well.

  6. There have been so many public shootings the last couple of months in places such as: schools, movie theaters, and restaurants. When is the violence going to STOP! At around 5:30 pm Tuesday evening, the police were informed that there had been a shooting on an eastern Kentucky community college campus. When they arrived to the scene, they witnessed something no one would forget. The campus was quickly put on lockdown for the handful of students who were still on the campus, to make sure their safety was the number one priority. At the scene, the police were able to recover the weapon used in the shooting. The police describe the weapon as a semiautomatic pistol. The police stated that a man came into the police department and said he knew some information about the shooting, he is now being seen as a suspect....HOLD ON.

So a man tries to do the right thing by going to police to give them some information on the shooting. (Which they have absolutely no idea who may have carried out.) And they want to make him a suspect? This is where I have a problem! They obviously do not realize what danger this poor man has put himself in. This man is basically saying “I know who the killer is or maybe”. That means the killer may know who he is. He is putting his life in danger. What if the man is convicted? He may plan revenge. Situations like this make people not even want to come forward to help authorities. He was just trying to be a good citizen and it ended up backfiring. I know the authorities are just doing their jobs, but something is majorly wrong here.

One of the victims was left severely injured. She was a juvenile, which raises some eyebrows. Authorities believe that this was all due to a domestic dispute. Love gone miserably wrong...STAY TUNED.

  7. Over the past several months, there have been many shootings at serveral public facilities. There has been the incident in Colorado, Conneticut, and now here to name a few. When you look over the lists of the places that were under attack, you will see similar tactics. Theses public facilities are not guarded well enough. The government's solution is to take away all firearms and the problem will be resolved. This is not an accurate way to fix the problem. In Decemeber a man in China stabbed twenty-two children. It did not take a firearm to kill, he used a different weapon. There is a growing problem when there are no guards with the proper weapons. A solution would be to train guards and teachers to properly operate a gun and use them in cases of emergencies, such as these. There is a great chance that he number of deaths would decrease, as well as crimes. Unless the individual is severly messed up, he or she will not go into a building where individuals are armed with weapons. There is a great death threat to their lives if they choose to do so.In my opinion, keeping firearms and supplying the proper people with them, will fix a lot of the problems.

  8. What happened in Kentucky is a very sad event. School shootings in general are heart-breaking. I feel that school shootings will never be stopped. There are, however, things that we can do to try and prevent one from occurring. I feel that after every shooting, schools and school administrators want to come up with these procedures to take if something like that happened at their school. It just seems kind of sketchy. You can't say that this will prevent anything because when it comes down to it one really doesn't know how they would react. Also i feel like adding medal detectors and having policemen at the entrance and exits aren't really helping. First, if you think about it, majority of the shooters are students IN the school already not other people trying to come in. Second, it kind of gives you a prison like feel to the school to see armed police there. I want to say it would add to the fear that the students already have. i guess there really isn't anything that can really stop school shootings. I do want to say one more thing though; i feel like many people who do live in areas that are a bit more wealthy and look a little better than other cities need to take more precaution and pay attention to what really goes on in their town. In this article someone stated that they didn't expect the shooting to happen there. I feel that thats the problem. things like this can happen anywhere regardless of where you live. Pay attention!

  9. As an international student from a relatively safe environment, in a country with very strict gun laws, I find any new about any sort of shooting very disturbing. I have not grown up around, or witnessed anything of the sort.

From my knowledge, with the very few classes we have had, I find a public place (especially a school) an extremely odd place of an alleged 'domestic dispute'. I question the motive especially as it notes no one from the student of faculty were injured?

I personally believe any gun laws changed or implemented from their current standing would not have prevented this nor will it prevent future shootings. If an individual wants to hurt someone in whatever way, they are clearly not taking any note of rules or regulations.

I feel the school should take note of these events and increase their security. Unfortunately, that would mean an increase in fees. Most people would agree, however, safety and ones life would be worth that price.

  10. With all of the shootings we have read and heard about through the news, we need to keep in mind of the numerous of other school shootings that didn’t make the news but were just as important. A few of us have said we need to put stricter control on the access to guns and the control of guns. But my personal opinion isn’t that I feel there’s an issue with our gun laws but more of an issue with our view as people on everyone’s psychological state of minds. The majority of these shooters, if not all of them, had been or currently were suffering from some type of mental breakdown from the beginning of their life or presently. The awful thing is the ones around them on a daily basis even made remarks that they knew something wasn’t just quite right with the individual shooter or they knew that that person was suffering from a psychological issue and although it’s not politically correct to say but some did make the comment they thought they were crazy.
We as human beings need to stop being so afraid of not opening our mouths when we see or know that something isn’t quite right with a situation or a person. We need to realize people are becoming bolder and more desperate and are becoming numb to consequences. True we don’t know what could and can happen, that’s exactly my point. We don’t know so we need to attempt to intervene beginning with the first time you question yourself “What is going on with this person and do they need to talk with someone?” Changing the gun laws will not keep someone from doing what they already have their mind set to do, it may slow them down a bit, but not stop them. Getting them the medical help and attention they need from the beginning is a bigger and better chance at resolving the issues, in my opinion.

  11. In my opinion i think the idea that the shooting could have been a ''domestic dispute'' is a big possibility since at the time of the shooting it was said there were about 30 students on campus which means most of the other students were gone for the day already. If the Kentucky College was really the gunman's target then he would of done the shooting when most of the students were on campus and most probably would of injured or killed more students. On the hand there it is still possible the target of the gunman was really Kentucky College but did not have a plan in mind. The fact that in such short time we have been hearing about so many public shootings makes our community feel very unsecured for not only our children's during school hours but even feel unsecured when we are in a public place. I really hope they find who was really responsible of this devastating event that caused the death of two innocent individuals.

  12. Seeing another story about an incident of a shooting at a school is getting to the point where it really isn't news, its almost like you're not surprised or you're just waiting for another story to break that is related to it. As for it being a domestic dispute, I could see it happening because there are only three people involved and if it was some sort of rampage, there would have been more dead. I believe that in no way will more strict gun laws prevent these things from happening. If someone wants to kill or hurt someone, they will find a way and do it. I feel like this will raise the rate of crime because then more people will be inclined to take a dangerous route in acquiring such weapons needed. There will be more overcrowding in jails and prisons and there will be people stripped of their rights because other people don't know how to be normal. There is no way to regulate the use or prevent these things from happening because it all depends on the will of the person. I personally feel like there will be more incidents like this if there is more regulation on guns because people will be upset and there is always that one guy who has to prove that the man cant hold them down. There just simply is no way of stopping people who have an incredibly strong will. Or if they're not mentally stable. But that's a whole different can of worms.

  13. To be honest it is always hard to hear about a shooting in a school especially if the victims are very young children. In the case of the Kentucky College shooting I actually don’t believe it was a school shooting like the title of the story stated. In the story the author states the police believed it was a domestic crime and I agree with the investigators. At the time of the shooting there were about thirty students on campus according to the President of the college I think the shooter was aiming specifically towards those two victims and not at the college itself. If the shooter had wanted to kill more people he would have started a shooting at an earlier time in which he would have an opportunity to shoot more people than just two. Even though I don’t agree that the shooting was aimed towards the school I do believe schools should have well trained security personnel to try and prevent tragic school shooting like the one we have had the last month of December. I know trained personnel will not always be able to prevent tragedy but hopefully there will be a decrease in these unwanted school shootings in out country.

  14. I believe that school shootings are happening too often and it need to stop soon. The president is trying to take guns away but thats no going to solve anything. People will have access to guns some way or another. They will find a way to get their hands on a gun if they really want to. So, America needs to take a different approach. Maybe deeper background checks when buying a gun or keeping security on every campus to make sure no one can just walk in with a gun and start shooting kids and faculty. Whether we put security on all campuses or we do something else, it needs to stop. America cant just sit around and wait for the next shooting to occur. We need to do whatever it is now so we can put an end to the school shootings.

  15. This is in reference to a report on the Fox News website, posted on January 16, 2013, reporting that fatalities from gun shots were reported at Kentucky College located in Hazard Kentucky. The report iterated that a gunman firing into a vehicle killed two people and wounded a juvenile Tuesday, as they sat in the parking lot of the eastern Kentucky Community College. Police recovered the weapon at the scene of the crime, which was a semiautomatic pistol. A male and female were already dead when police arrived about 6 p.m. Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen reported that no suspect had been identified at this time, and the relationship between the victims and the shooter were not known at this time.
In view of the number of school shootings that have taken place recently, I think that more stringent safety precautions should be implemented for schools and on college campuses. I feel that the parking permits for on campus parking for students and faculty only, are definitely a crime deterrent. There are also many other safety measures that are available, such as the installation of surveillance cameras on the campus parking lots, armed guard towers that overlook entire campus parking lots, or by increasing the patrolling of campus police surveillance. I think each school and college should implement the safest precautionary measures possible for their particular institution, and that this should done immediately.

  16. I think that these types of things usually happen unexpectedly and people are always surprised when it happens in their town or near their area. We could try to prevent school shootings and go out of our way to make schools a lot safer and such.We could try to put metal detectors in school entrances to warn officials that there are guns on campus or that someone is trying to bring them in,but the fact of the matter is that no matter how secure a school or area may be the person who is trying to cause harm usually succeeds.

    ReplyDelete
  17. With all of the school shootings that have happened in the past there is a lot of debate about what to do to solve this problem. I think that increased security on the campuses in the form of either law enforcement personnel or armed security guards that patrol the campus is one option. Metal detectors at the entrances are another option. Teachers having licensed and concealed firearms who are trained to use the firearms and trained to protect, evacuate, or keep children out of harms way in the time of a shooting is also an option.
I think there are many options that schools and our government can implement to stop an attacker. The ones that I listed are all very drastic measures and will have a lot of controversy. I do not think any of those would have stopped the Kentucky school shooter because it was a very quick attack outdoors but they might work if an attacker is trying to enter a school facility with firearms. I think that gun control could work in slowing an attack if the shooter had less bullets and a less capable firearm, but the government would have to completely ban all firearms and not just impose stricter gun laws because any firearm can kill. Even if there were no firearms allowed in the hands of citizens they still would have other ways to hurt people and could obtain firearms illegally.

  18. Once again the media reports on another school shooting. School shootings have become a very common thing in our society, the media seems to report on school shootings on a daily basis. I do not think we can stop school shootings entirely, However I do believe that this act of violence can be prevented. I do believe that every school should have a security plan and a response plan in place, to deter school shootings. By having a security plan in place, it would make it harder for an individual to commit an act of violence on school grounds. The security plan could consist of having proper lighting, cameras, and even arm guards. In addition with having a security plan, a school should also have a response plan. A response plan would help to prepare the staff and students in the case of a school shooting or an act of violence should be committed on school grounds. The response plan could consist, on how to respond to the act of violence, where to find shelter, emergency contacts and even what to look for on a suspicious individual. In conclusion I do believe that at this moment all we can do is to continue studying this act of violence and continue finding a way to deter school violence.

  19. Such a tragedy another shootout occurred in our country. No matter gun assaults can't be one hundred percent prevented. Guns aren't the problem, it is the people who commit to harming others with any weapon. A gun only makes it easier to take away the lives of other human beings. Humans have been at war with one another since the beginning of time. Overall, actions can be taken to prevent more lives from fire armed weapons. I agree with placing more metal detectors and using other methods to reduce the chances of someone committing another shootout. But, banning firearms wouldn't reduce the rate of murders. Not sure entirely, but I think the United Kingdom have a higher violent crime rate then America. It is ironic that Switzerland has the lowest crime in the world yet statistics say there about one gun for every two people. That is something to think about it. In Switzerland I think allowing more guns around prevents the common citizen about using a gun for any crime purpose since the majority is armed. While in a country like the United Kingdom any criminal who posses a firearms feels more in power, and has a higher chance of committing a murder. I don't know much, that is what I believe. People murder each other, and guns don't murder people. Never heard of a case yet of a inanimate gun committing a crime.

  20. In 2012 there were so many violent crimes that happened on school campus. We have now began to try to make sure that these incidents do not happen again. The question states what needs to be done to stop violence of this magnitude? I don’t have the exact answer to that question but I do know that to better protect students the metal detectors are a good start. I know some claim that placing those on school and college campuses would cause student to feel like criminal but I think I would rather be safe than sorry. When we go to the airport we do a lot of complaining about the airport security but when your plane lands safely at its detestation you are glad that they airports are taking all the safety precaution to make sure that your arrive safely. I also believe that the school needs to have more interest in the student’s home life. Most of the student that do these shooting have some type of issues going on at the home so if the school starts their then I believe that we will see less of the school shootings of this type. So more safety precaution can begin to help lower and possibly eliminate violent schools shootings.

  21. I'm pretty sure this caused much chaos with the ongoing shootings happening these past couple of months on school grounds. It's very alarming even if the event was not involving current students or school related. Gun laws should be more strictly enforced for these reasons. I don't think this will stop the crimes from hapening, maybe more difficult. Also, they are only pubicizing certain school related shootings, why is this? I don't think there is a politically correct answer, this to me can be controversial, but I do think this needs to be addressed because more and more innocent people and kids are dying everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  22. as the article says, i don't think that the school was the target or that the shooter try to kill people just becuase they were at that school or becuase he/she had something against the institution. yet school shooting is aproblem that the country is been dealing since a long time go, but is just wasnt that alarming as it is right now.
The saftey measures that the schools, where the shootings happened, have now should be there to prevent those events. now those are the only schools that are havong the proper "plan" against shootings. all hte schools in the country should of have them, and no wait till 26 people get kill again as it happened in Sandy Hook

    ReplyDelete
  23. I believe young adults at schools that have not been targeted take school shootings lightly. The police at this shooting believe the school itself was not a target, but was an act of domestic dispute. School shootings have been going on for a while now. For example, the columbine shootings happened a few years ago but were very tragic. I agree that school shootings are very alarming right now. I believe bomb/gun threats are being taken more serious at this time than before because of the recent events. I believe that any bomb/gun threat should never be taken lightly, even if the threat seems unreal.

  24. After reading the article it is to my belief that the shooter had no intentions of going into the school to do a school shooting he simply shot the people he targeted which were the victims in the car. According to the article the shooter only went to the car and fired shots there rather than go inside the school to pull off a mass shooting. It is sad that two people lost their life and one person was hurt in the shooting but luckily the gunman didn’t go into the school whereas many more victims may have been shot and killed. To answer the question of what methods are needed to stop violence of these magnitudes in this situation I would have to say there is no real way of preventing it. There are only so many police officers out there and they can’t be everywhere at once. The article didn’t mention if the school had a security officer but even if they did he wouldn’t have been much help in this case unless of course he was right by the car when it happened. The only way to stop violence of this nature would be to have previous knowledge before the shooting happens.

  25. After reading this article I'm relieved that this was not yet another school shooting. I do send my condolences to the family, but being on a college campus there's no doubt it could have been worse. Even though this was a false alarm, there still is something that needs to be done about crimes of that magnitude. School shootings are not necessarily anything new I've heard of at least 3 in my lifetime that I can recall. I think that we should do a more proactive policing. There's no science to predicting a mass killer and there's just no telling who could just snap. The thing I think we need to do is make the presence of the law known. For example on the streets the presence of the law is felt with the red light cameras and as I result there's been less violations. I think that on school campuses where people are trusting and fully vulnerable there should be a friendly reminder that “hey the law is present”. Things like surveillance and more patrolling. On bigger campuses that I've been to they have what appears to be poles with emergency phones scattered throughout the campus which connects directly with campus police. There's really no way to monitor who is who on a college campus, because there's so many diverse people. Similar to the signs that home security companies leave in the yards of their clients, I think something like that would be beneficial scattered throughout the campus. I think a few cameras, some emergency phones that stand out, and even a couple of signs just showing there's law enforcement around could knock out a great amount of crime.

  26. I agree with the fact that there should be some sort of evacuation plan for school shootings since it had indeed increased over the years but allowing the teachers to carry concealed weapons IN the school is out of hand. Having teachers licensed and armed isn't going to defer school shootings in my opinion it is going to make the situation worse. And the main objective is to keep the guns out of the school so bringing them in and handing them to teachers is the complete opposite of that. I like the idea of metal detectors, emergency phones, and things of that nature but I don't know about the cops hanging around the school. I don't think it happens frequent enough to actually have the cops hanging around the school all day.

  27. I'm glad to see that this wasn't just another act of random violence on our schools. Just a few days ago at Lone Star Community College in Houston, there was another shooting and this one too was not directed at the student body or faculty members. It seems that since the Columbine (if that's how you spell it)shooting there has been a lot of attention drawn to school shootings. But school shootings had been happening in urban and low income schools for years and no one was raising a red flag. It seems to me that the only time that legislators act to do anything is when whites are the ones who are the victims. Acts of violence are wrong regardless of who they are perpetrated on.

  28. First, if we read the story how can we decide that this is another school shooting? You cannot compare what happened in Kentucky to the shootings in Colorado or Connecticut. These were two adults and a child sitting in a car in a school parking lot. There are not a lot of details in this story about what lead up to the shooting or why these people were targeted, but it seems to be more of a domestic dispute than a school shooting.
If we have stricter gun laws it will not solve the problems of gun violence. Even holding the gun dealers accountable for selling guns without following the proper procedures will not help. Someone said if we put stricter laws in place it will increase the crime rate, how so? Those that want guns find a way around the laws that are in place now, so by having stricter gun laws it will not increase the crime rate. The answer is not taking away a person’s right to own a gun.
This same person said and I quote “There will be overcrowding in jails and prisons and there will be people stripped of their rights because other people don’t know how to be normal.” What is normal? Do you think “normal” people go out with three or four guns and several hundred rounds of ammunition and walk into a crowded place and start shooting? At the end of this persons comment it was stated “Or if they’re not mentally stable. But that’s a whole different can of worms.” Is it? Do you think a mentally stable person would again walk into a public building and just start shooting? Maybe that’s the problem, we have several mentally unstable people in society and we need to start studying the cause mental illness.

  29. From this article I can say that I do not believe this was a shooting directed towards the actual school or even towards anyone attending or working at the school. This was simply a shooting that happened near a school. The school did the right thing though in shutting down the campus and conducting a lock down because the gun shots were so close. This is a sad incident that happens every day and this one just so happend to be near a school. Because this was not a shooting directed towards the school in any way, I do not think there could have been much done to prevent it. Security gaurds on campus may have been able to be witnesses of the shooting and in return report it to school officials but that is not preventing the shooting. Previous knowledge of this incident happening would be the only way to prevent it from happening and like the article said, they think it was a domestic dispute which in alot of cases is rational thinking and most likely the shooter committed this crime without thinking or because of a previous incident that day between them and the victims. I wish more could have been done to prevent this from happening but without police or security guards just being at the right place at the right time I do not think much could have been done.

  30. I am looking at this case through a research methods approach. If I was trying to use this article as part of some secondary data set then I am not sure it would even qualify. I would have to set it aside because in my opinion it really isn’t a true school shooting where a school, student, or any personnel were targeted. It just so happens to have been a simple scene of the crime and nothing more from what the article portrays. Now if security is at question then yes, I think I would have to question where security guards that were on duty for the evening classes are. Perhaps beefing up their patrol or having a check gate to where no any random persons could congregate in the parking lots leaving the school vulnerable for crimes to occur.

  31. After reading this article, I don't think that this shooting was related to the school. It is unfortunate that the dispute ended up taking the lives of two people. Also, I am curious to know why these people were on this college campus if neither of them were students. I think that schools are starting to become targets of shootings without any cause. This is a scary thought for me since I am currently a college student and employed through the school district. It seems that the only time any security measures are taken is after an incident happens. I understand that there needs to be a lockdown for these types of situations, but what about precautions and security measures?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Here is an example of the school doing the right thing. They first locked down the school and did there search, to make sure the shooter was not there, and there was not danger left. They then allowed the students to leave. Even though this was a tragedy because some was shot and another person was killed. I hope they find the person who did the shooting. It does not matter if a person goes into the school and shoot people. We need to have armed security at are school. This is a prime example of why we need armed guards at this school. some one does not have to come and be an active shooter, a person can have a domestic dispute and there significant other could come and kill them. This school is open for a security breach. Does someone have to be killed before we change the policies?

  33. I don’t know what it is with people bringing guns on or around school campuses, but it getting out of hand. Even though the shooter did not go in the school shoot up people this person still ended the lives of two people and injured a juvenile. For what reason we do not know, so I hope the police of Kentucky catch the person that committed this crime and bring justice to this family. While also making an example out of this person to deter people from bringing guns in or around school campuses to end someone’s life.

  34. This shooting was a tragic event that took place at this college, but on the bright side it was not a massive school shooting. But what I would like to know is were there not a single camera that could have gotten any sort of recording of the shooter, or what he might have been driving, something. For the overall shooting this did not really seem as if it was really a school shooting but more of a just street shooting, the way the school handled it was in a great manner, locking it down and then later releasing the students after searching for a shooter.

  35. Here we go again another copycat shooter, or is it domestic violence portrayed on television. This is a question for the law enforcement to answer. The sad thing is people feel that they can solve their problems with a gun. Killing another human being isn’t easy to do, watching the life force or soul escape a person body is an unreal event. Sometime the person is at peace other times it seems the person is fighting to live; every ounce of energy is used just to cling to life. Anyone who’s been around death has empathy for the person who passes on and the family. For a person just to shoot and kill at random is no explanation of their reasoning. I believe as a society we need to have harsher laws for people who commit crime that result in murder. No more country club jails for offenders, we need to fight hard for victims and their families but not to have to give up our freedoms in the process.
