  1. This method of bringing drugs to the U.S is just a few of many! This drug trade is never going to stop. There are many border towns, and how many underground tunels could there be to the same situation. Drug cartels are always going to find a way to smuggle drugs. This tunnel is only one of the many tunnels that exists. But, I also wonder how long it took for the authorities to spot that rectangular spot in the street. Why didn't any citezen reported those rectangular spots to the cops? Citezens are afraid to report any incidents with drugs being smuggle to the U.S. We should give the people the confort and security so they can report any drug trades.

  2. I think this issue has gotten totally out of control and now the US government is basically just treading water when it comes to stopping the smuggling of drugs from Mexico. If we would have addressed this issue years ago when the influx of people coming across the border began, this issue wouldn’t have gotten to the point where it is now. It is so easy for the cartels to sneak drugs and people across the border these days that it will be impossible to the US to stop it or even reduce the amount of drugs or people. For people in Texas, Arizona and California, we have noticed this issue for years now, but the government didn’t want to address the issue based on race and the loss of votes if we single out people from Mexico. We have allowed very dangerous individuals involved in the drug cartels of Mexico to penetrate our borders and now we are simply playing catch up to help deter some of the drugs coming across into the US.

  3. I can’t say I’m shocked, but this is pretty funny to me. I’ve heard many crazy, and not very logically stories about smuggling drugs across the border but this is my favorite. Not that I’m promoting drug usage or smuggling, but this is so clever! Not only is it clever but it’s extremely risky, which probably makes the job that much more of an adrenaline rush. These smugglers are doing the job right smack dab in the middle of the city, filled with people and authorities, so it’s also kind of a slap in the face to law enforcement. I kind of have a hard time believing that the removal of the parking meters is the only way to stop this form of smuggling. Is there really no other way to stop this? Where are these smugglers finding their way into the ground to do this? And why is it so hard for us to stop them from going underground to perform these actions? I could be wrong, it just seems like taking the meters away completely is a temporary fix.

  4. They found 16 tunnels that lead to 18 meters. Thats a lot of drugs being brought in. How long have they been smuggling these drugs in? How much drugs did they bring in? I am very curious about this. This is a huge slap in the face to law enforcement. I understand that you couldn't suspect this because cars were in the way and no one would think to check under a car next to a parking meter for drug smuggling. A genius move by smugglers a lack of knowledge by us. Knowing that they are advancing their tactics, what's next? How much more can they improve? Before you know it, drugs will be coming in unexpectedly forever. How do we catch on to these new ways? I don't think there is a way we could possibly know. Removing the meters will not stop the smugglers. It will only open the door for them to find more ways to smuggle drugs in.

  5. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. For years now drug smugglers have been using creative and innovative techniques to smuggle drugs into the U.S. This one is risky but I suppose it got the job done for a fair amount of time. And like the saying goes, if you want to hide something, do it in plain sight. People rarely want to intercede in others business so if they see something strange, they leave it alone for fear of looking paranoid or just plain dumb. Like Bailey Clark mentioned earlier, I believe that at this point the drug problem has gotten out of control. I think involvement by the government would be useless. Perhaps they could provide a temporary solution but that simply is not good enough. If the government and law enforcement agencies don’t band together to think of some way to begin eradicating this problem it will only get bigger and bigger. Action needs to take place now because the drug cartels are only getting smarter and smarter. If only they put their creative and innovative minds to good use.

  6. Wow…although this doesn’t surprise me, I am rather, amused by the fact that only God knows how long this has been taking place and the amount of drugs that have been snuck in. I can’t believe that no one ever paid attention to the plugs, and to the amount of time cars were parked, or to certain cars regularity. I don’t believe that no one ever noticed, and what about people walking nearby and other people sitting and waiting in their cars. It also, is rather embarrassing for enforcement officials, who never noticed these plugs, until now. Also, it would be interesting to have some available data, to know how much drugs were actually brought in, and where those drugs ended up, the numbers are probably large and would detail the amount of drugs consumed in the U.S. Furthermore, how and when do these drug smugglers build these tunnels and put these plugs in place?

  7. Drug smugglers never cease to amaze me with their new ideas of smuggling drugs. I have to admit though; this one was like, the article said pretty ingenious. And a little bold might I add that they had the guts to commit a felony in broad daylight, with what I’m assuming hundreds of people around. As long as there are drugs and long as they are illegal, smugglers will keep coming up with new ideas to get them into the U.S. From using drug mules (both animals and people) to launching it over the wall in bales of hay to underground tunnels, smugglers will find a way. Although I don’t advocate drug use in the least bit and wish that they would stop transported drugs across the border, I must admit that I’m kind of interested to see what they will come up with next. And to think, the time and energy they put into building an illegal tunnel to smuggle drugs could have been put to good use.

  8. Its amazing the ideas people create to smuggle drugs across the boarder. The only bad thing is drug smugglers are still gonna make money while Arizona is losing money by not being able to give out citations and lose money from parking revenue. But I am actually amazed on how they were creative enough to cut out slabs of concrete and place drugs in a car while they are parked. But just curious how do people not notice and the ones that did notice how do you not report it.

  9. This is pretty comical as Kali said and quite innovative. I do not like the response of the government though. Taking away the parking meters in my opinion isn't going to do anything. There are numerous places where the drugs can be smuggled in. Simply taking the parking meters away is going to take $8,500 away from the government and its tax paying citizens. I think that the drug problem in the United States especially in states located near Mexico is going to continue to grow. There really isn't much we can do accept catch them in the act. It always seems to me that we are one step behind them. Yes we eventually catch the smugglers, but how long does it take for us to catch them? How many drug runs have they performed, how many different types of drugs have been brought in simply by lifting a parking meter, stuffing the drugs through a hole into a car. That is crazy to think about, extremely risky, if that was my choice of business, which its not, I do not know if I would even think of that. Completely innovative thought.

  10. its a little creepy how creative drug dealers are with smuggling drugs to the U.S. Although creativity isn't linked with intelligence, it makes me wonder are these smugglers smart or just going through a process of trial and error? Also, what is the minimal amount of drugs needed to be smuggled to make money? what i means is, if you find a way to smuggle a little but the cost is a lot, what is the limit of these smugglers?

i would also think someone would notice when a saw or power drill or whatever is being used to cut through concrete! i kinda think we as a society is dumb if we don't notice unusual things going on in our environment.

  11. Metered parking spaces being used as locations to get drugs over to the U.S. is certainly not a surprise. Yes, it may be something we may not have heard of before, but drug smuggling has just got up so much that there are many ways that smugglers get their stuff over here. I mean let's think about the wall that has been created, dividing the U.S. and Mexico, we thought that that would help stop all the drug smuggling... well not exactly! There have been many other ways that smugglers have gotten their drugs over to the U.S. like tunnels and many other ways. A simple fact that drug smuggling hasn't came to an end is because we have some patrols that simply don't give a shit and accept money from smugglers in order to get the drugs on this side. Governmental crime is shown through this in that their have been instances where governmental officials have known of such smuggling, but decide to cover up, may be due to money they receive for their cover-ups!

  12. I'm not even gonna lie, I'm pretty impressed by this tactic. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but wow they are pretty creative. And this is just one of many ways too. Obviously, there isn't enough being done to control this problem. I realize that they were pretty sneaky about this, but I still feel like somebody could have seen this happening and done something to prevent this from happening. It's sad that this happens, because it gives almost all Mexicans a bad name because everybody hears about the bad things going on. And we wonder why Arizona cracked down on Mexican immigrants so much. I'm not saying I agree with what they're doing at all, but maybe if the people responsible for this actually took care of the problem, there wouldn't be so much hate towards the Mexican culture. Maybe this is all wishful thinking, but something really needs to be done here.

  13. This is a very impressive way to smuggle drugs across the border. These cartels are always thinking of new ways to smuggle the drugs across. It seems as if each way one ups the previous way. The creativity amazes me. Who would think of this? It’s a shame the guy who owns the meters is going to lose these meters. If the tunnels were closed off then the meters should still be used. The meter guy did not know about what the meters were being used for so he shouldn’t suffer for someone else’s actions.

  14. A part of me wants to laugh aloud, merely for the funny creative way of this new attempt to smuggle drugs in and out of the United States. Nevertheless, I have to save it for later because just as if this is an unusual attempt there will be much more to come. Then, it would be just a matter of which attempt is funnier. I do not want to laugh at the fact that they are smuggling drugs. That is never a laughing matter, but the old saying “when you want to do something bad enough you will find away” seems to stand true with drug dealers and smugglers. This drug smuggling issue has become a major epidemic, you have kids trying to smuggle, people using their body orifices to smuggle drugs, coffins, and host of other items. It is only going to get worse. When people stop looking away and stop taking kickbacks (payout/offs), stop encouraging the manufacturing of…etc. I think it will start to turn around some, not a whole lot but some, then and maybe then society can progress to reducing drug related smuggling and crimes.

Border patrol and Homeland Security really need to step up their game or turn it over to someone a little more qualified in dealing with this type of issues. It is almost like trying to watch an HD TV program on a 1978 floor model TV (technology and the way of thinking just does not match).

  15. It is amazing how creative criminals can get. These smugglers are one of the few that are genius, it is kind of sad to think about what they might have created if they had not been criminals and used there minds to create many inventions. It is the same way with sickos that kill people, they sometimes have very high IQs and who knows, if they had not started killing people maybe they would have been the next Einstein of our time or create the next wonder of the world.

  16. This article is insane, the way drug smugglers are actually getting smarter with every attempt. The plan seems bullet proof, the way you use false bottoms in the vans makes it impossible to catch in the act. This is almost kind of scary that they are growing with intelligence, who knows what will be next. It is crazy what some people will do to get drugs into our country. This article can be linked with the other drug issue problem in the sense that it is impossible to stop the “war on drugs.” This plan took meticulous planning on everyones part. They had plenty of spots to where they weren’t necessarily going to the same spot over and over again. Even in the picture you can barely see where they took out the concrete, this was genius.
