The Empire Hangs in the Balance

Interesting article on phone hacking by the Rupert Murdoch Empire in London. Protests break out and top officials resigning left and right! Talk about getting caught red handed! :)

  1. This does not surprise me at all. In my opinion I think this happens a lot in the United States. The government probably goes in our phone lines and listens to our conversations as well. What surprised me was that it was a tabloid that was trying to listen in on their conversations. In a way it was smart and I see why they have been in business for 168 years and sold 2.5 million copies a week. On the other hand they have no right in hacking in our phones and listen. It is none of their business to listen in on our conversations. It is wrong for them to listen to the voice mails of celebrities, politicians, and murder victims. One family they had hacked there phone deleted some messages from their missing daughter so that they can have more room for messages and turns out that she was already dead. Those messages are the only thing that the family could had have of their daughter.

  2. Stephen,

Ok first off, you are COMPLETELY WRONG about our government in tapping our citizens phones... Look at the RIGHT TO PRIVACY doctrine and the three prong test it has enacted by the SUPREME COURT in question Katz v The United States 389 U.S 347 (1967). On one aspect about wire tapping phones you are partially correct... Because of the Patriot Act, if the government can show in a time of WAR that you are a threat to the GOVERNMENT and the CITIZENS of the UNITED STATES then they may abridge your Civil Rights within reason. I LOVE how people get on these CONSPIRACY kicks and have NOTHING to back it.

As Far as Murdoch, this is not that much of a surprise it goes to show that money talks, greed runs deep, CAPITALISM and the bourgeoisie have always been in control (Marx is laughing in his grave), and until they piss off the right person & get caught by someone with just a LITTLE BIT MORE INFLUENCE (The Prince of England) they will continue their fascist ways by controlling the majority of the masses and keeping the people fragmented. Or as the recent riots have started to show... the Proletariat rises up!!! Heh... Only time will tell!!

  3. The Murdoch case it seems should have been resolved back in 2007 when Clive Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire were convicted and sent to prison. The fact that more investigations are now being brought against News of the World makes you realize that the cover up must be huge. Also with the fact that it incorporates the police as well as the newspaper and possibly others is appalling. I think Rupert Murdoch will skate by without much of a punishment and that they may come down harsher on his son James. So the Murdoch empire might be affected somewhat, but it will still go on in the future. Not only is England looking into this but so are other countries around the world including the U.S. If in fact News of the World broke the Foreign Corrupts Practices Act, then Murdoch could be facing harsher crimes than just hacking. Even though James denies knowing anything, it seems to me that in fact he knows more than he is letting on. He needs to be punished for the cover up as well as the crimes that News of the World committed

  4. Murdoch has caught so much in the past for writing things that arent suppose to show up in the newpapers it dosent surprise me one bit that the he is catching hell about this. the government try to cover up so much heaven for bid someone actually breaks in and leaks out what happens for a change the last time that happened was in the u.s over the 9/11 scandal. i dont think wire tapping should happen to everyone just people of "interest" but as we all now they have to control everything like a kid in the candy shop trying to get his or her parent to buy them everything it cant happen that way people need to know they truth about whats going on Murdoch was just trying to push that a little more i think that he will get harsh penalities against him and maybe push him out of the media career but his son is the one who is going to get ruined over this sure its wrong for them to tap everyones phones but noone has the balls to stand up and say that its wrong when one person does it they are pushed into exile.

  5. Here is case where you have individuals knowingly breaking the law for financial gains. It seems that many illegal acts occurred that are associated with white collar corporate crime. It troubles me to see that law enforcement officials involved in this mess. These are officials that are held to a higher standard of ethics. All individuals involved should be ashamed of themselves for committing individual acts related to some form of white collar crime and in the name of greed. Clearly this is a situation that involves people at the very top of the corporation. However, these individuals will not go to jail. Instead lawyers that represent Murdoch and other higher officials will go unpunished. It does not look good Murdoch and his empire.

  6. As we can all tell Rupert Murdoch is a very intelligent man who built a media empire on newspapers, but what caused him to commit an illegal action of “phone-hacking?” Murdoch is a very rich man who we call a bourgeoisie. He probably has been doing unethical things in his life but because he has a lot of money he gets away with 99% of it. Thank goodness he is being investigated for phone-hacking. After doing further researching, one article mentioned that The Daily Telegraph reported that the News of the World hacked the phones of families who were related to those soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, which pretty much disgusted me. But yet again the ones being questioned denied the allegations. In conclusion to this, 12 people have been arrested in this investigation and Murdoch vows to do whatever it takes to prevent another scandal from interfering with his empire. That means he needs to straighten his act up.

  7. This is a touchy topic because it effects not only the government but ourselves as well. when a tabloid runs for over 168yrs and gains so much popularity and info you would think to investigate how they gain their info and who do they get it from or whether if it's legit or not. but obviously in these scenarios they had so many connections that it didn't matter who it was or how they were getting their info, it was being published and passed thru the wires. it's one thing for information to be published with it has to involve corporate level and government issues but to phone hack personal and civilian issues is just wrong. the act for phone hacking was passed to minimize terrorism acts and govt official businesses which in those states is fine, but no where along those lines was or makes it ok to interfere with the personal lives and business of others that are coping or dealing with the loss of love ones or attempts to solve a crime or investigate one. that goes for celebrity affairs as well, they deserve the same rights as normal day to day people and deserve privacy to their lives as well.

  9. Kristi,
with no disregard did you actually read what you wrote?? To quote you "if a police officer obtains another form of communication ILLEGALLY, the Exclusionary Rule will not protect you in a court of law"..... WHA WHA WHAT!!!!??? You have to be KIDDING me.... That is the whole point of the EXCLUSIONARY RULE... evidence obtained ILLEGALLY is tainted and therefore Poisonous by the "Fruits of a Poisonous tree doctrine"... It's the LAW..... NO GREY AREA!!! JUST BLACK AND WHITE!!! The right to privacy is implied in a little document called the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION under the 4th amendment... unless your familiar with it look up Mapp v. Ohio, 367 U.S. 643 (1961).... Just say'n

Oh, and yes post 9/11 things are slightly... well quite a bit different... but the later still applies... the Patriot act is the only thing that allows warrantless wire tapping and that is due diligence to the countries safety.
