  1. This is a not good place to not be stipulated to... if you come out of this prison alive it would be a miracle. It is the inmates running the prison.... OMG I can't imagine having to work there.

  2. I don't I could ever work there to be there and to know that inmates have tattoos of officers that they have killed is crazy. What kind of prison is that were the inmates run the prison. The ratio is 1 guard to 100 inmates those are losing numbers the guns that they carry dont have enough bullets for them.

  3. WOW!!! It is amazing how they have any guards’ period, how could anybody work in a place like this. It is almost like facing death every time you go to work. The guards are outnumbered and could do nothing to protect themselves or prevent a fight or riot.. CRAZYNESS!

  4. When you have 100 inmates to 1 guard there is no way around the fact that there will be problems. Here I honestly dont know if the system can ever be able to take over again? Once you leave the prison in a gangs hands I'm pretty sure you wont ever get it back; unless you wipe out that said gang.

  5. Now that is a scary prison! I understand how prisons are limited because of money so they cannot hire more guards, but knowing of the guards mentioned that got his eye gouged and another killed, how much do the present employed workers get? A brave person would have to want to work there. You could tell there is no rehabilitation at all. Although you do have to consider that they are murderers and rapists and committed violent crimes so the best place for them is there. Question is what are they going to do if it literally overflows. Like they said it was built for 3,ooo capicity and they currently hold 7,000? That is a huge uncontrollable riot waiting to happen!

  6. I have seen a lot of TV shows on prisons and I have to say this is probably the worst one I have seen. The guards have no control, prisoners run the prison, and it is severly overcrowded. If you get sent there you have to be a lucky motherf***** to get out alive.

  7. The fact that there are 100 inmates to a guard makes it very easy for the inmates to have total control of what goes on inside the prison. The way the life in this prison is described it sounds like a hierarchy of inmates in prison: prisoners have ranks, and are well dived into 3 gangs.
This prisons sounds more like Cape Town’s gang community, but nothings surprises the most like hearing that there are people who want to be incarcerated in this prisons to belong to a group. Just like justice, prisons differ from place to place and there is no way rehabilitation can be obtained in Cape Town.

  8. I agree with ray... This is one of the worst prisons i have seen. The chances of getting out of here in one piece can't be good. Just like Greg says "It's a good place to be from".

  9. As much as I don't want to admit it, I can understand where some of those guys are coming from. On the outside they're nobodys living a rough life, but if they go to prison and join the numbers gang they become somebody. They get respect and power, they wouldn't get that outside of prison.

  10. That place is out of control! I could not even begin to imagine the stress that comes along with working there. You would live the rest of your life constantly looking over your shoulder and waiting to get jumped. That would be horrible.

  11. This is crazy! Like many people have already said, I can't even imagine being around something like that. I have lived a very privileged life, and can't even picture myself going through something anywhere close to that. Even just being a guard at a place like that could be dangerous.

  12. This looks insane. There are way to many inmates for the small amount of gaurds there are. I can't imagine being a gaurd and knowing that you could be killed any second or that you have no power over the inmates.

  13. Why am I not surprised that the gangs run this prison? It seems like all the worst prisons in the world are run by the gangs that inhabit them. I don't even know why guards are hired at all! If someone told me that I was being sent there, I would probably commit suicide. Just saying!

  14. This is crazy! Prison is supposed to be where ones freedom is limited and to have prisoners run the prison is insane! Those guards are very brave to work in that prison cause no telling what happens in there.

  15. I remember when we watched this video in class. This was crazy, I didnt really ENJOY the dudes having to strip and to get checked to for drugs. But like everyone else had said, I am not surprised that this gang is in charge.

  16. All I know is that I would never go into a prison like that just to do a documentary. Yes, I admit it, I am a wimp and do not have enough courage as Ross Kemp to go into a place where there is a chance of not coming out alive. Literally, the gang it the one who is controlling this prison and if they do not want you there, you are dead.

  17. The documentary done by Ross Kemp is a small enlightenment over one of several prisons, which holds a verity of criminals. I agree with a lot of people on the matters of the security level at this particular prison. The guards are out numbered however, when you look at it the majority of prisons have guards are always out numbered by the prisoners. Prisons have more inmates coming in than being released on a daily basis.
I am not surprised by the actions that are preformed by each inmate. Once you have been convicted of a crime and are punished for years at a time prison becomes a new way of life. Different survival skills are learned and acquired during ones stay in such a hostile environment. One becomes a part of gangs or assist in violent acts towards others. It is just the way of life in prisons, act or be acted upon!!

  18. The documentary on this prison and how the numbers gang is allowed to have control of the prison is horrific. In my opinion, I think that most prisons are over populated, and the guard to prisoner ration is not that great. But, on guard to several hundred or one hundred prisoners is absurd. I also believe that this prison is being run this way due to the prisoner’s backgrounds. When I say backgrounds, I mean not only the types of crimes they commit. But, the prisoners also living in poverty, and being treated poorly by society. The actions of the prisoners are not surprising at all. When you come from and environment that is full of violence and the only way to survive is to join a gang and participate in violent crimes, is a way of life. I agree with Alaska when she stated “It is just the way of life in prisons, act or be acted upon!!”

  19. First of all i do not understand how they could build this prison in the middle of a city with school and golf parks. Also how is it that inmates who kill officers in the prison and brand themselves with their names are still alive. This type of prison filled with gang members who want to get in instead of getting out should have way more security. I understand why they striped searched them but didn't really appropriate seeing it. Still amazes me that gang members would use razor blades and black ink to make their tattoos. These gangs pretty much run the prison which is unbelievable that South Africa doesn't do anything to change that. All in all it must suck to be a new inmate in this prison.

  20. Hi everyone.firstly I live in cape town and have a family member incarcerated in pollsmoor but on the juvenile side.anyway let me first tell you that ther are not only the 26,27 and 28 gangs that exist in south african prisons. There are also the gang called the RF's and if I remember correctly they are also divided into 3 groups.anyway yes the gaurds there should be given there due thanks for working in such a highly dangerous place (as I say 'the devils playground') but everyone should know that a lot of gaurds also are part of the corruption in pollsmoor. Don't think that these prisoners are just scum of south africa and deserve to be there because a lot of them just went on the wrong road.yes pollsmoor is filled with unimaginable violence and abuse in all kinds but there are also people, prisoners who are striving to rehabilitate themselves despite all the violence.all of these things you saw in the video is true and that's how they live because they have to survive and that's how it has been since the number gangs got started years ago.yes they make tattoos with razor blades but how else you think they are going to get a tattoo? Going to a tattoo parlor? What you didn't see in this video is the good things being done by volunteers and the prisoners themselves.these are the forgotten souls of society and should not be made a specticle of.yes these kind of videos should be shown to make the rest of the world and future generations see what a life of crime will lead to.what is more needed than a video is people actually helping these men and women who are incarcerated and no I'm not talking bout physically helping them,I mean prayer.these prisoners need God and yes you may think I'm a old hag trying to bring and preach the Word of God bt I'm actually a 25year old single mother of 1 little daughter who is preaching the Word of God.and I would love to do that for a living.helping these prisoners who society so easily forgot and considers them less than human.no!God loves them no matter what.and yes ther are hundreds of these prisoners who are released monthly and comes out so much worst than what they went in.because of things that went on in prison.I personally help 1 ex-prisoner who was in pollsmoor a couple of years and became mentally ill because of the sexual abuse he had to endure all the years.its sad to say the least. Anyway so yes pollsmoor is scary and yes if you have committed a crime then justice should be served. But rape and violence and HIV wasn't part of that sentence.anyway I'm going off the topic so what I want to say is yes this may be one of the worst prisons in the world but if people stop 'oohing' and 'aahing' and start to actually help and just a prayer would even do then things will change. Oh by the way there are worst prisons in cape town than pollsmoor.they are the maximum prisons.and I'd you think that the general of the 28's gang was scary, you should see the leaders there.they are not even called generals.they are ranked way higher.anyway start doing something for these men and women and children even if its just a prayer you may offer.God is listening.God Bless.
