Ross Kemp Documentary on the Jamaican Posse
Video documentary on the Jamaican Posse put together by British journalist Ross Kemp. I have put together a presentation on the Jamaican Posse for the upcoming 2011 University Day in April. Serving 13 years as a Criminologist and Sociologist and having read every piece of literature on the Jamaican Posse this is one of my expert areas. Enjoy the documentary!

I very much enjoyed this documentary! Before viewing this video, I thought of Jamica as this fun, beautiful vaction spot and nothing about Jamica was bad. Its interesting to see that gang violence is an everyday thing for people living in Jamaica. I have never seen this side of living from this part of the world. Like I've said before I knew Jamaica as one of the worlds best vacations spots and ones safety is somethig that i would think woulnt be a problem. To know that Jamaica has a homicide rate four times higher than the world rate, maks me think twice and put more effort into learnig more about my next vacation spot.

I really never thought that it was so much of a problem there...I typically think of Jamacia as a get away spot, not that you should get away from Jamamcia.I knew crime and violence existed everywhere, but I never really saw it as a problem in Jamacia because I thought life was great, relaxing, and fun here.....This makes me think of Mexico now because mexico has some great vacation spots also, but I saw in the news that you should be extra precautious entering Mexico due to drug problems and killings...So the lesson learned here is to do your research no matter where you go or how good you hear it might be.
ReplyDeleteHow could someone not be in a gang that has to live in a place where 250 are killed in a matter of 2 months? Its like the situation in Mexico now- No poverty stricken civilian is going to give up a drug lord, when they can violently murder a family or give the family money for support. No wonder there are so many gangs in Jamaica. Its very obvious that where there is poverty and suppression from government gangs can become a tool for politicians.

Watching this documentary and going to the presentation on university day was some well needed information about jamaica I have always thought of if as just party island. I found out how naive I was learning this information. I agree with what melissa says if its life or death I would join the gang in a heartbeat. Survival of the fittest if its the way of life.
ReplyDeleteGreat documentary, it informs us of the things that are going on around the world. Many of us are unaware of the violence that is taking place. I agree that in a country where there is a great amount of poverty and violence, one will engage in this type of activity as a means of survival.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about Jamaica I sure don't think about world known gangs. I am kind of surprised at the amount of murder and other gang activity that goes on there. I could not imagine that a place like Jamaica, that is billed as a Caribbean island paradise to travelers, is such a violent place.
