Although Sudan is now divided into two countries problems continue to exist in the Darfur region which is home to the longest running Genocide campaign in recorded history!

  1. In the United States, we tend to take it upon ourselves to get involved in other countries affairs. Like this article, which states that, an activist from the United States went to Darfur in western Sudan. The article says that this activist went there to help with the genocide. We have to remember that other countries might not want our involvement in their affairs this could include political or governmental issues. I have respect for this activist trying to help the people of Darfur. However, I believe that his efforts should be focused on issues that are happening in the United States.

  2. Cody, I totally agree with you. We cannot help everyone because the needs in this world are overwhelming....it's like trying to plug one hole in the dike and another one pops up. Also, I thought it was interesting to know that although there is a warrant for President Omar al-Bashir's arrest, there does not seem to be a genuine interest to find him. The activist have a very difficult job and like the article said that the people running Darfur "aren't dumb." There definity is a lack of interest and attention to the crisis in Darfur and Sudan because it seems so hopeless.

  3. Hi..I respect those who are so willing to help others in other countries but we have so many problems here in the US that need our attention too. It seems some problems we continue to get involved in trying to help is a problem that just keeps repeating itself. As Cody said, we have our own issues here in the US. We (the US) seem so quick to run help other countries when we need to be helping our own. And I don't mean that bad at all, I just know we have many issues here at home that need fixing.

  6. It is good to hear that some celebrates really believe in something so deep that they are welling to be arrested for that cause. Cheers to George Clooney and his father for taking a stance on the issue of Darfur. I might not agree political to George Clooney. However, I hope his actions acts as the spark that gets people taking about Southern Darfur and the topic of genocide again. Hopefully, this will raise the issue again and bring awareness back into our society about Southern Sudan and make individuals question what can I do. Rather we agreed to it or not our society is connected globally. The fact that the UN and NATO refuses to stop the starvation and humanitarian crisis brought on by this guiltless President Omar al-Bashir is unacceptable. It is encouraging to see a celebrity finally grow a pair and take a stance on this issue. Finally, I find it amazing that Michael Moore cannot bring it upon himself to make a true documentary on this issue. What a minute there is nothing in it for him.

  7. Tragedy, genocide, social disorganization, and marginalization are issues that Sudanese people live with everyday. Now that Sudan is split into two countries the public has seem to forgotten that atrocities are still being committed. There are no reasons to celebrate independence for the Southern Sudanese people. The Northern Sudanese government continues to bath itself in blood by slaughtering innocent Southern Sudanese and practicing violent tactics against the South and driving citizens from their homeland and stealing the resources. These violent tactics are wiping out the general population. The Northern Sudan government continues to do this because no country has a vested interest in Sudan. The media is partially to blame because genocide is not a sexy issue to report on. By not having an honest dialogue on the genocide that still happens in Darfur it has become harder to get the message out concerning Darfur. It also demonstrates that the public has forgotten and lost interest concerning Sudan. Save Darfur joined forces the organization United to End Genocide one of the largest activist organizations in America dedicated to preventing and ending genocide and mass atrocities worldwide this meant that more resources were available. This move was meant to reach a border crowd and get people interested again about Darfur. Citizens need to get involved because the United Nations has failed to provide leadership. Article 1, from the United Nations mission statement states that the United Nations will take successful collective measures for prevention and removal of threats and for the suppression acts of aggression and bring peace and encourage respect for human rights. Why has this not been done? Moammar Gadhafi bombed and murder innocent civilians and NATO forces intervened to avert a humanitarian catastrophe. What is the difference an argument be made that Sudan is a humanitarian catastrophe? Regarding Cody, Shirley, and StephSmith you points are well taken when you state that John Prendergast should focus on the problems plaguing America but I disagree. It is important to talk about Sudan in particular Darfur. Education is knowledge and people need to get enthused about Darfur again. By teaming up with celebrities such as George Clooney Mr. Prendergast is able to draw attention to the atrocities in Sudan.

  9. Here I am: educated, experienced, I read the news, I watch the news, I have a fairly successful background, yet, I am almost completely ignorant of the facts about Darfur. Even after reading a few articles, I'm still not sure what's going on, except many innocent people are being starved, killed, and abused. I recently watched a short documentary that showed how a Muslim group was bringing stability to the area; then I read that there is an Arab Apartheid against blacks there. What? Regardless, the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition was formed to end the genocide, and that's a good thing. The Coalition's fear that people have forgotten the cause maybe partly due to those like myself who have little knowledge of what's going on there. I remember well the atrocities of Saddam, Kaddafi's dictatorship, problems in Syria and Egypt, but what's up with Darfur? Most people know of George Clooney's involvement with the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition, but knowing his political positions, many just don't listen. And where is the compassionate media on this? What will put a fire in our bellies, wake us up, and make us shout, "Enough is enough!" I'm not sure I know, but I do strongly believe in this group and their mission to save innocent people. That's always the right thing to do. Let's educate ourselves, try to find truth, donate if we can, or even be an activist. I'll even hold Clooney's hand if the show of unity will save one innocent.

  10. Sothern Sudan’s vote to split from Northern Sudan is a victory against the government in Khartoum led by president Omar al-Bashir. However, Bashir’s war against the people of Sudan goes on. What has happened in Sothern Sudan and Darfur has predictably spread to the rest of the country. Potential genocide against the peoples of the Abyei, Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile regions of the country is a possibility. A revised strategy for PDEC and other humanitarian groups must be to include all of the threatened regions of Sudan. The atrocities in Sudan will never stop until there is a change in government in Khartoum. The key is to get the 5 permanent members of the U N to co-operate. China must be persuaded that making deals with the Khartoum government is not worth the cost in human lives.
