America's Hardest Prisons! National Geographic

  1. I enjoyed watching this because I am interested in prison shows. I like seeing what it is like in prison and the type of people that are in there. I try to figure out how they think. I surprises me that some people love prison and don't care how long they stay in prison. The gang members who create violence usually don't have a chance to change. Then you have the ones who realize that the gang banging life isnt the way to go and they make improvements and better themselves. Like the female prisoner who decided to go to a halfway house. She didnt want the same for her daughter so she decided to get away from the gang life and make something of her life. The guy in prison, the one who demonstrated how to make a weapon looks like he can change as if he has a chance of getting out of the gang life but at the moment he doesnt seem like he wants to change. They should think about how they got in jail to begin with and then think about why they wont be getting out. That would be a clear realization for me but for others its a lot harder.

  2. I also really enjoyed watching this in class. For me, growing up in a very sheltered suburban city, this is a complete new world. And it really is for them too. The rules and schedules and the redundancy of every day in prison is their lives, almost like a culture of sorts. I think that the prison guards are so brave, they go in every day and know what responsibilities they have, and handle it so calm and collected. I can't even begin to imagine how terrified I would be if that was my job. Especially the guard who handled the mentally insane; she was talking about how one man spread feces all over the wall and how she's been threatened, but goes on to say that she loves her job. I believe that she genuinely does, but I was so shocked that even after how much the prisoners rebel against her and threaten her, she still loves the chance to help them. I was very impressed by how they all handled their jobs.

  3. Yes I agree, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this documentary and getting an insight into prison life. However I am disturbed by all the gang violence and wonder what each gang hopes to accomplish by continually to kill members of rival gangs, but also members of their own gangs. I can see how joining a gang for protection would be beneficial, but I just don’t understand all the useless killings that take place. I am not sure the people involved in the gangs nor the people who are actually doing the killing know the reason they are ordered to kill a specific person. This documentary shows indeed that violence breeds more violence. I think the guards of the prison deserve a big round of applause because I know personally I couldn’t deal with people throwing their excrement’s at me on a daily basis. I did find humor in the scene dealing with the men watching the women and some of their comments. They are so inventive when it comes to communication, why don’t they use their smarts for positive acts instead of violence.

  4. Being able to see how prison works with my own eyes is way better then hearing it from someone or reading it in a book. I enjoy watching shows like this because I wanna know what goes on in prisons and I wanna know why people actually enjoy going into prison. I now understand more of why some inmates do not wanna go back into the real world. This is the life style they only know, and because they became so adapt to it, they are king of the jungle. So why leave. What really amazes me is how none of the guards get paid good money. They willing go to work knowing they might not make it out one day. They put up with some of the most violent criminals in the world. So to them i applaud them. But it is sad to see some of these inmates who are actually pretty smart and have smart tactics use them for violence instead of something good in the world. I dont know but i really enjoyed this video.

  5. Prisons have always grabbed my interest. This video is excellent as it takes you inside and shows you how dangerous prisons are, not only for the inmates but for the guards themselves. Prison is extremely dangerous because of the inmates inside them. It intrigues me to know what these prisoners think about on a daily basis. At the beginning of the video, a female said she likes to see blood squirt out from people she attacks. What drives people to think like this? That is what I want to know. I wouldnt last in prison honestly...1...probably because I would be to scared to think like most of these inmates. They are very clever in how they make weapons and communicate. Probably too much for me to understand. I don't get how people so clever dont use that for positive outcomes. I know people have already stated that, but it is true, the ways in which these inmates communicate and develop shanks is beyond me. I wouldnt know where to start. This video does an excellent job of showing how these prisoners go about their business on a daily basis.

  6. I have always wondered what goes in the minds of prisoners. Why do some try to reform themself? Why others rather stay in prison? It is incredible that many of the people are very intelligent and can be very resourceful. Yet, they tend use it toward violence. Whenever I think about it, if they want to truly reduce the crimes of these people, why not create social reforms. Heck, let them voice their opinion. Sometimes many just want that acknowledgement. Some want to find work in any form or fashion to many ends meet. There are even others that want to feel like they are a part of something larger than themself. Me, personally, I think I would rather die than live the life of a prisoner. So, I would wonder about those who were wrongfully convicted and locked only to find out they are innocent few years later. Again, the damage has been done. What will the courts say, "I'm sorry"? That is why I am not surprised that people went through that are bitter toward law enforcement and the courts.

  7. I enjoyed watching this film about prisons in class. It gives you a more realistic look on how prisons work, and how dangerous it can be to work in a prison. If you choose to be a prison guard, you have to stay alert at all times, and try to stay one step ahead of the inmates. One guard was right when he stated “it’s a game”, the prisoners will try to play on you, and you have to play them to find out information. Finding out information ahead of time can be a matter of life and death. It is also sad when we were watching this film, how some of the prisoners were comfortable with being locked up and having their freedom and privacy taken away. One female inmate choose her gang, and to go to prison over children. The shocking part is how an inmate wanted to be transferred to the prison that housed gang members, just so he can get into altercations with rival gang members.

  8. I enjoyed watching the film and getting a better insight into what goes on in prisoners minds. It was nice to see some of the prison guards aspect of things and why they choose to do the job that they do. What I found kind of sad though, is when they started talking about gang members and how loyal they are to the members of their gang. Just the fact that a mother would choose a gang over her own children is puzzling to me. I get that she grew up in it and that majority of them are her family, but her children are her family too. One thing I found quite interesting, was when we got an inside look at how the prisoners make weapons. If they can put that much time and effort into creating something destructive, I wonder what would happen if they spent more time trying to do something productive.

  9. it does not surprise me that some of the inmates would rather stay in prison. if they come from a life of not much and in prison they have more, why would they want to go back to a way of life that is less than what the prisons guarantee?

  10. Reading about something in a book only allows a certain degree of insight. Being able to see and hear firsthand accounts, on the other hand, can prove to be much more impactful. What I saw in the documentary didn’t really surprise me. If we as a society witness violence and aggression in the free public, then why wouldn’t we expect to see that violence and aggression times 100 in a location where criminals are stored together? My uncle spent the majority of his time in prison and jails. He always came back with stories. The violence that occurs in prison is meant for survival. If you don’t join a gang or engage in the same acts you will most likely not last very long. It’s a bit encouraging, however, to see that some individuals want to change. They’ve realized their mistakes and hope and when they are set free, they hope to start over so that their children don’t follow the same path. Also, much respect to the individuals that decide to work with such a population. I can’t imagine how terrifying it must be.

  11. I enjoyed watching the video in class. Its interesting to see a realistic view of prison rather than the cliche version on television. The prison system currently implemented to me seems to be so dangerous. It is supposed to be a form of punishment but it is the other inmates that are the real inmates. All the shanks, all the beatings... that is more than any inmates should go through. Their punishment is isolation from society, not a fight for survival.

  12. This was a great video to watching class. This video opened my eyes to the real types of prison out there not the ones depicted by mass media. I enjoyed seeing how creative an inmate can get and how open the one that created the shank was. He even admitted to the prison guards that he will always have a shank on him. He is not scared of them and that can be terrible if they are trying to control the inmates. They might be in prison but they still act the way they want, the inmates know they have a certain amount of control over the guards. Prison seemed more like gang isolation than a rehabilitation program.

  13. I'm not surprised that there are some prisoners that would rather stay in prison. They get institutionalized, kinda like in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption," when the old man didn't want to leave jail because he was afraid how the world has changed. Also the way that the inmates communicate with the females is hilarious. The men are like caged animals, no pun intended. The racial fights are also very scary, how people once incarcerated still can't give up gang life. It's like common now man you got caught time to do the time and get closure with people that you once hurt. I don't get repeat offenders, obviously the gang isn't what you thought it was.

  14. wow, this video really did leave me speechless. its sad to see that people would even have to consider into choosing between their own kids or the gang. But then again its people who are just "loyal" to their gang. Many people like to blame parents and that its their fault they never taught them from right or wrong. In a way I agree with that but then i dont. The reason why i agree is because there are some families who have always been part of a gang and as you growing up around gang related you are mostly likely to do the same. As for other there are good parents who wonder how did their child become into someone so problematic. In the end no matter how good the parent has been to their kid it all depends on each one of them on who they hang out and what they do.

  15. I find it very interesting on ho much gang violence is in prisons. Also the way that gangs members are able to communicate to the outside world to continue there gang activities. The main problems for gangs are how they are able to get gang related items into prison. For example, the prisons try very hard to keep this problem from happening. In my opinion, the one good program is that they have education classes and vocational schools. For prison members to get their life’s back together. However, when members get out they tend to come back as repeat offenders. In addition, the amount of money that the taxpayers send on maintaining these prisons facilities. At this particular facilities most of the resources and staff member’s efforts goes to try to control the gang activity. It is kind strange to think that gang members can have such major impact on our society even though they are lock up.
